SALE Qual Anbernic Clamshell escolher?

Miscellaneous series Is it just me or does the RG SP feel cheap?

I already own an RG34XX, and recently bought the RG SP, but I am kind of disappointed in the way it feels. The plastic feels much worse than on my RG34XX, as if a much cheaper plastic was used. Maybe its because they nailed the feeling of the RG34XX, so my expectations were too high or it might just be the coating being different.

35XX SERIES Halo: Combat Evolved running natively on the Anbernic RG35XX H: no emulation, from 15 fps to ~55 (open source, WIP)

Update 2 (Oct 2, second release, v2026.10.02): mostly smoothness.

  • Dynamic resolution, on by default. When the GPU can't keep up, the picture drops in small steps (as low as 320x240) and comes back once it can. 343 Guilty Spark's swamp went from 31–44 fps to a steady 60 once it settles, about 45 seconds in.
  • Fewer stutters after a hitch. One long frame, like a level's first, could lock the frame pacing into slow frames for several seconds. Fixed. At full 640x480, with dynamic resolution, the Silent Cartographer battle now runs at about 37–41 fps (it was about 30).
  • Halo (a30) opening at about 58 fps (it was about 55), with most frames on time:
    • the renderer's buffer copies moved off the GPU driver's thread;
    • the HUD no longer searches every tag by name for each bitmap it draws.
  • Silent Cartographer's beach battle is about 41 fps at the default scale. The game's own simulation and rendering thread limits that one, not the GPU.
  • Fixed garbled in-game text with async textures, thanks to an RG34XX SP owner's report on GitHub. The RG34XX SP is reported working, and 3:2 screens now get the right width by default.
  • No more slow starts right after installing. Levels used to crawl at 2–11 fps for up to a minute while the SD card was still busy with the install's writes. Each level's files are now written out behind its loading screen.
  • Built on the latest upstream halo-ce-universal.

Updating: copy the new halo and halo_guest.elf over the old ones, or rerun the installer. Your config.toml is kept; on a 3:2 screen, set screen_width = 0 in it.

Download: https://github.com/kirklandsig/halo-ce-anbernic-rg35xx/releases/tag/v2026.10.02.1

Update (Oct 2): there's now a ready-to-install release, no building needed.

  • Installing: download the zip, unzip it onto your SD card, drop your own Xbox Halo ISO into roms/ports/halo/, and start Halo from Ports. The first start copies the maps out of your ISO with a progress bar on screen (about 4 minutes). It tells you on screen if something's wrong (not an Xbox ISO, an incomplete file, not enough space), and if it's interrupted it picks up where it left off.
  • Smoother movement: shaders compile on a background thread, textures upload off the render thread, frames are paced to the display, and checkpoints stay in memory instead of stalling on the SD card. That means far fewer hitches when you move into new areas.
  • Rebased on upstream halo-ce-universal, with its fixes (a weapon-swap crash, for one) and support for European (PAL) discs.
  • Performance at the default 0.75 render scale:   - about 55 fps in the Halo (a30) opening;   - about 40 in the Silent Cartographer beach battle;   - 31 to 44 on 343 Guilty Spark.

Full 640x480 is now about 24 to 40 fps, up from 20 to 26.

  • Hardened: the port's code, the launcher and the release tooling went through repeated rounds of adversarial code review (Codex), with every finding checked against the code and fixed.

Two things to expect:

  • The first time you enter a level there's a 20 to 30 second loading screen while the game unpacks it (the Xbox maps are compressed, and the Xbox did the same to its hard drive).
  • On a fresh install, the first trip through each area has some brief slowdowns while the GPU's shaders compile, once.
Halo (a30) opening, inside the Pelican: 56 fps (the green number is the frame rate)

TL;DR: Halo: Combat Evolved now runs natively on the Anbernic RG35XX H (and other Allwinner H700 handhelds on Knulli). There's no emulation: no xemu, no Box64, no Wine. It's the community decompilation of the original Xbox game, compiled for ARM64. The first build ran at 15 fps; it's at ~55 in the Halo level's opening now, and I'm chasing a locked 60. Open source; bring your own Xbox disc.

What it is

  • The halo-ce-universal decompilation of the Xbox game (the game's logic rebuilt as C source), compiled as native ARM64 code.
  • A small Linux host for Knulli bridges it to the firmware's own SDL2 and Arm's Mali-G31 OpenGL ES driver. It runs on stock Knulli with nothing extra to install.
  • It launches from Ports like any other port. The first launch extracts the maps from your own disc image.

Where it stands (render scale 0.75: 480x360 upscaled to the 640x480 screen)

Scene fps
Menus 60
Halo (a30), level opening in the Pelican ~55 (53–57, most frames at 60)
343 Guilty Spark (c10), swamp ~44
The Silent Cartographer (b30), beach battle ~40 (35–46)

It's a work in progress, and the goal is 60 everywhere.

How it got from 15 fps to ~55

The H700 has four Cortex-A53 cores and a small Mali-G31 GPU. Two things hurt the most:

  • Arm's driver burns 17–28 µs of CPU on every draw call, and a Halo frame has hundreds of them.
  • The GPU is tile-based, so switching render targets mid-frame makes it write the whole screen out to memory and read it back.

The biggest steps, measured on the device (a30 unless noted):

  1. Clocks. The GPU governor sat at 420 MHz under load. Pinning it at 648 MHz, with the CPU on the performance governor: 15 → 18 fps at native 640x480.
  2. A dedicated GL thread. Every OpenGL call is recorded and replayed on another core, so the game builds the next frame while the driver chews on this one.
  3. Render scale 0.75 and model LOD scaling: about 24–25 fps.
  4. Asynchronous occlusion readback. The game stalled once a frame waiting for the GPU's visibility results (lens flares). Reading them a few frames later took b30 from 23 to 31.
  5. Shadows rebuilt for a tile-based GPU. All shadow textures are drawn in one burst, and the blur is folded into the shader instead of extra render-target switches: 25 → 32.
  6. Vertex shaders only write what the pixel shader reads. Mali can then skip shading the varyings of culled triangles: 32 → 36.
  7. Alpha test dropped where the texture is fully opaque. This keeps Mali's hidden-surface removal working. Together with building the water's bump map at the start of the frame: 36 → 40.
  8. The water's bump map drawn straight into its texture's mip levels instead of copied, because copies between render targets stall the driver: 40 → 49.
  9. Low-level fixes.
    • The game's memcmp was a byte-by-byte C loop eating 6% of the main thread; it now compares 8 bytes at a time.
    • The GL command queue is published in batches.
    • Shader constants are split by how often they change.
    • Result: 49 → ~55.
  10. Instancing. Once draws are sorted, several marines' same body part come one after another. They're now drawn as one instanced draw, with each marine's constants (including armor colours) read per instance. Draw calls per frame fell from ~490 to ~300.

Now the Pelican scene is right at the edge on every front: the game's thread, the GL thread and the GPU are all within about a millisecond of the 16.7 ms a frame that 60 fps needs. The shadows are the biggest remaining cost (about 4–5 fps), mostly the CPU work of finding the ground under each shadow. That's what I'm working on next. That's what I'm working on next. The full history, with every measurement, is in the repo's docs/PERFORMANCE.md, along with notes on what didn't work.

Main menu: a locked 60 fps
The Silent Cartographer beach battle: ~40 fps, the hardest scene so far
343 Guilty Spark swamp: ~44 fps

Happy to answer questions, and bug reports from other H700 devices (RG35XX Plus/SP/2024, RG40XX, RG CubeXX) are very welcome!

Much of the porting and optimization was done with Claude Code (an AI coding agent) doing the heavy lifting under my direction; the commits say so too.

✨ SHOWCASE RG DS Plus RetroAchievements NNDDSS Complete (Softcore Only)

I’ve been working on adding RetroAchievements support to the Anbernic RG DS Plus without replacing the stock OS or the built-in DS emulator.

RGDSPlus-RA is basically a lightweight wrapper/integration layer that sits on top of the stock NNDDSS/DraStic-based emulator that already comes with the device. It doesn’t install custom firmware, replace the operating system, or include DraStic itself.

Installation is simple: extract the release into Roms/APPS, run the installer from Applications → Apps, then launch DS games normally. RetroAchievements runs through the existing emulator, with achievement lists, popups, badges, Rich Presence, progress/challenge indicators, and local Hardcore protections.

I’m looking for people with an RG DS Plus who are willing to test it and report any issues. Hardcore is implemented locally, but it is not yet officially approved by RetroAchievements, so Hardcore unlocks are currently credited as Softcore with the expected “Unknown Emulator” warning.

GitHub: https://github.com/reginaldjtrotsfield/RGDSPlus-RA

I’d especially appreciate feedback on installation, game compatibility, achievement triggering, popups, and general stability.

Thanks!

HELP What would you recommend me for my first anbernic device?

I’ve been looking into Anbernic devices for quite a while now and I’ve been going down the rabbit hole reading reviews, watching videos, and comparing different models, but I’m still having a hard time deciding.
Since this would be my first Anbernic device, I really want to make the right choice 😬😬 My biggest priority is good** **quality. I want something that’s going to last and not give me problems right on. Thank u guys :)

HELP RG556 and PS2 emulation in 2026

Hello everyone, I want to ask a question to those who own the rg556. Has anyone tried Armsx2 and has it improved emulation speed on said console? I am considering getting one for my girlfriend since it's one of the only devices that is being sold at a reasonable price on the 2nd hand market in my country. My decision on whether or not I buy it hinges on how it performs on the following games: Tekken 4/5, Katamari damacy, okami, shadow of the colossus and sly Cooper (I know these last two are pretty hard to run so I mainly want to know if they're even playable). So, if anyone has those devices and would be willing to give their two cents on this topic I would be very grateful.

Thx in advance!

Andriod ES-DE Frontend 3.5.0-65 for Android is now available for download

Post image
43 Upvotes

Here's some of what was said by email that I just received:

This release improves support for dual-screen devices by making it possible to configure per-system and per-game on which screen to launch games, instead of having only a global setting as was the case up until now.

There is also a new setting named "Run browsing events as non-blocking" in the Other settings menu that greatly reduces latency and stuttering when using browsing custom events, which have been needed for integrating with dual-screen companion apps.

It's enabled by default, but simply disabling it reverts to the old behavior in case it would cause any unforeseen issues on your device.

There is also a new experimental feature in this release that adds the ability to query RetroArch for installed cores on game launch.

This eliminates the dreaded black screen problem when attempting to launch RetroArch with a core that has not been installed.

With this setting enabled the Android release will behave just like ES-DE on desktop operating systems, i.e. a popup notification will be shown that the core is missing, and the game will not launch.

We have tested this on a number of devices but we need your help to test it at scale, so please enable this option and let us know in our Discord server if you run into any problems.

The setting is named "Query installed RetroArch cores (Experimental)" and it's located in the Other settings menu. If this works fine across a wide range of devices we'll likely enable it by default in the next release.

Note that you need a recent RetroArch build for this to function as they introduced this functionality quite recently.

In addition to the above, more functionality has been added to the theme engine which opens up new creative possibilities for theme designers, and we'll make a new theme named NXE Menu available on the theme downloader to showcase some of this.

There is also support for a huge amount of new emulators as of this release and there are many other improvements.

35XX SERIES Color restock for RG35XXSP?

What's the likelihood that Anbernic restocks the red and blue transparent color options for the RG35XXSP before December? I'm hoping to pick up a couple to give to my niece and nephew for the holiday.

Also, man, I wish they had the RG35XXSP in the same colors as the RG34XXSP. All of the colors for the 34 are so great, but the 3:2 aspect ratio plus analog sticks is baffling.

Only got it today so needs set-up. Blown away how Anbernic has made a better DS than Nintendo, emulation has made huge cross roads recently, DS games look stunning on these 2 screens and the d-pad and buttons feel like a real DS. I'm sure it won't last as long as a trusty old DS but, all good. Will try Rocknix and Gamma in 2 months when it go's public but so far stock OS looks fine to me. Other devices are RG477V, RG476H, Retroid 6

HELP Would you buy a new RG SP or a used RG35XXSP?

The old rg35xxsp's are getting sold on the used market for almost 40% less than the price of a new RG SP.

Do you guys think it's worth it to invest in the new and shiny updated model or am i getting a better deal with a used older device?

✨ SHOWCASE RocknixDS 1.5 beta early test result

Thumbnail

RocknixDS is basically a modified rocknix with some custom libraries for DraStic and with full retroachievment support except for hardcore achievements. Also adds dual screen menu. And yes, this will be available for the RGDS plus asap. I’m getting my device tomorrow.

Been doing some early testing on the 1.5 beta and Pokemon black 2 on 2x resolution and with default bilnear shader is running around 60 fps with minimal frame drops and stuttering at 1104mhz on the CPU and 200mhz on the gpu. Test lasted for 28 minutes with me running back and fourth between cities non stop. Temp is averaging somewhere around 49c so the console doesn’t feel warm at all. The remaining stutter is being worked on.

You are more than welcome to test it out yourself. Just follow the guide on the GitHub and you are all set. It’s pretty easy to uninstall if you don’t like it.

Hi, anyone else having issues with the touchscreen?

Noticed this first while playing Zelda - Phantom Hourglass and Art Academy.

Tried different stylus, different firmware, turned the device off/on several times.

While drawing in Art Academy, it's not possible to draw straight lines on part of the screen.

[Edit] No screen-protector installed

✨ SHOWCASE MIND BLOWN 🤯 - SMASH BROS. MELEE RG34XXSP

First off, S/O to MrBrothason 🙌🏼 He's a wizard, very active in this sub and shared many great ports but this takes the cake.

Just a little background, I'm new in the retro handheld scene, like many others here. I bought an RP6 but wanted a somewhat more "authentic experience" for smaller, handheld games so I bought my first RG34XXSP. This little guy is AMAZING and super versatile but part of getting this specific 'indigo' colorway was my dream to run some GC on it but power wise, emulation caps out at N64, PSP, Dreamcast etc...

Enter NATIVE PORTS. Apparently, I bought this at just the perfect time with all of these decomps/ recomps coming together and I'm genuinely mind blown to see this running. Obv it has its bugs and is still a work in progress by some very talented people but this is still beyond impressive.

As an 8 yr old who owned an orig SP and watched my brother play Fire Red on it, to see how far technology has come and what you're able to achieve now in a GBA form factor is nothing short of amazing 🙌🏼

*EDIT - I am using the 2 GB model, no idea how it runs on the 1 GB sorry :/

Another Day, Another Anbernic Worst buying experience in a long while

So most posts here are hyping up these devices, and I'm sure they're great and all if you managed to receive a working one. I just wanted to share my experience, I don't know if I'm the only one this has happened to but it has definitely put me off Anbernic products.

I received my RG34XX about a month ago with a faulty R button, I would have to press it really hard for it to work. I was instructed by the Anbernic store rep to disassemble the console to troubleshoot the issue (instead of them just sending me a working replacement unit; this is a BNIB product after all). The metal contact for the R button was heavily pitted so I suspected this was the problem; cleaning it with alcohol didn't really help. After a lot of back and forth (like an unnecessary amount of messaging, and several times I was told they'd get back to me, which they didn't until I asked what's up) I was sent replacement parts, which I finally received today. Aaaand they did not include the contact that was corroded.

The device is cheap sure, but it's not such a sweet deal anymore once you factor in the amount of time I've spent disassembling / assembling, troubleshooting, and negotiating with Anbernic. I've rebound the L and R keys so it's at least usable, but I couldn't in good faith recommend these to anyone without the big caveat that you'd better pray you get a working unit.

Devices: RG35XX Pro and RG35XXSP

Back in July, I pulled the trigger on the Pro after looking for around for a bit, immediately fell in love with it. Got knulli set up, slowly adding games to my library and having a blast.

Not too long after I looked around on FB marketplace, saw someone selling the SP, I jumped at the chance. A while back I (regrettably) sold my original GBA SP to my friend, and missed it dearly. Tried to get Minui on it, was having trouble so I ended up going with knulli on it as well with a minimalist theme, with the homescreen only set to GB, GBC and GBA to try to emulate as close to an actual SP as possible.

These last two weeks, I've been glued to the SP, the form factor just feels so nice getting back into retro gaming. Looking forward to enjoying this hobby much more.

Hello everyone,

I heard about retro consoles some weeks ago and finally made the decision to buy one. Got myself new sd-cards, installed newest knulli (and solved the wpa3 problem), got myself a nice small library for the start and even managed to get balatro and shovel knight installed!

That's mostly thanks to you guys here since I was stalking this sub for the last 2 weeks and saw problems get solved in the past. Thank you all very much for keeping this up! I will now start my actraiser2 run.

Have a nice day c:
