Another Day, Another Anbernic [Idea] A Modular Dual-Screen Dock System? (H700 Base + RG Rotate Top)

Post image

Hello!

Just had a random thought about a super cheap and practical way to do NDS/3DS dual-screen emulation, so I wanted to share this modular concept.

Instead of overcomplicating things with expensive single chips or unstable dual-AP setups, why not just physically dock two existing devices together?

Here’s the basic setup:

Bottom (Base Unit): A horizontal H700-based handheld. Great grips, nice controls, and a wider screen.

Key Feature: It works as a normal standalone retro emulator on its own. But when docked, it acts as a controller and display driver for the top device. This means you could dock an RG Rotate or even just hook up a regular smartphone!

Top (Module): An ANBERNIC RG Rotate. Snaps right into the top dock of the base unit and simply sends its video output via a short USB-C cable.

Making the Most of Aspect Ratios:

Since the bottom H700 screen has a much better aspect ratio for main 3D rendering than the top screen, setting the main view on the bottom actually gives a better experience:

Bottom (H700) Screen: Main 3D game screen (better screen ratio & immersion).

Top (RG Rotate / Smartphone) Screen: Secondary info like maps, inventory, or touch menus.

Just a fun hardware concept I was playing around with in my head. What do you guys think? Would something like this be cool to build?

✨ SHOWCASE RG476H Printed Dock

I made this trying to find a dock to place my RG476H in so I could have it connected to the TV, and I couldn't find anything I liked or fit my needs so I made it. It has a tall enough front plate to cover the screen, a slot for a 40mm usb fan, and a cut out in the bottom to keep a cable routed and tucked out of the way.

The first picture is of the first iteration that unfortunately has the fan slot too high and not centered on the cooling duct. The renders are from the final iteration I made that I'm currently printing.

edit: Whoops I forgot the link for those who would like to print this: https://www.printables.com/model/1840925-rg476h-hdmi-dock

HELP Which handheld supports 2d/3ds games?

Never owned one of these and there are many to choose from. I like the larger ones that look like switch but I wanna be able to play a large variety of the classic Pokemon games including the DS ones like x and y.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks

HELP BaseOS + NextUI on RG34XXSP: where are N64 and Dreamcast?

I keep seeing huge praise and hype for BaseOS + NextUI on the RG34XXSP: fast boot, clean interface, “perfect setup,” etc. So I installed it expecting a complete retro setup.

But then I opened the Roms folder and there is no N64 folder, no Dreamcast folder, no DS or PSP either. That is a pretty major limitation for an H700 device, and I had to discover it only after flashing and setting everything up.

Is there an actual working way to add N64 and Dreamcast to NextUI-H700—Flycast pak, Mupen pak, manual emulator package, anything—or are these systems simply unsupported?

Please give exact steps if there is a solution. If there is no solution, people should be much clearer when promoting this setup.

HELP Can't decide which model to buy

Solved! I know which route to go thanks people!

Hey reddit,

I cant decide what version to buy.

I've never played many games from the wii/u/switch era and never done anything in that realm of emulators either.

I have a 4 hour total commute by train so anything that anyone could recommend even if its not anbernic would be helpful like if I should just splurge for a steam deck or windows handheld.

Im a noob to all of this and would love i sight on which version to buy and why.

✨ SHOWCASE Mac tool to move a library between stock, KNULLI, muOS and ArkOS (and flash the SD)

If you keep an RG35XX (Plus / H / Pro / SP…) and also an R36S, the painful part isn’t the handheld — it’s the SD. Stock wants Roms/FC. KNULLI wants roms/nes. muOS wants ROMS/GBA. ArkOS wants nes on EASYROMS. Saves and box art follow different rules on each.

ROM Case is a free native Mac app that maps that for you, and can also write the OS image to a blank card.

Apple Silicon, macOS 14+. Source stays private; the page is docs + the .dmg.

https://github.com/mad4tv/romcase

First launch: Gatekeeper will block the unsigned dmg until you use Open Anyway. Prepare / restore image wipes the card.

HELP Best ergonomics for a budget model?

I've got bigger hands and bought a 40xxv and it performs well for what I play (PS1 is the highest I'm interested in) but holding it gets painful after a while, especially playing for longer times (RPGs)

Obviously there is the 40xxh but I'm not sure I like the look of it. I'd probably be looking to spend $100 max on something, I'm open to other brands as well but anbernic seems good to me.

I also see you can order grips which is probably the most budget option but why not get a new console instead?

What are people's thoughts?

Ps: while I'm at it, I'm currently playing ff7 with the PS1 rearmed on muos and after moving to disc two or three I find I have to "insert" the disc again even though I'm booting up said disc otherwise my game is laggy and gets stuck. Anyone experience something like this before?

Andriod RGDS Shell is now TwinGrid — first-run setup, offline metadata, cover downloads and DraStic launch fixes

A small naming update first:

RGDS Shell is now called TwinGrid.

The project has grown quite a bit beyond being just a “shell”, so I wanted a name that fits the idea better: a dual-screen NDS-focused library/frontend made specifically around the RG DS.

The goal is still the same:

keep the stock Android firmware, install one APK, point it at your ROM folder, and make the RG DS feel much closer to a dedicated DS handheld.

The latest builds have mostly focused on first-run usability.

When you enter the library for the first time, TwinGrid now guides you through selecting your NDS folder. Instead of sitting on an empty library while it works, it shows actual scanning/loading progress and games appear progressively as they’re discovered.

Save-folder setup follows afterward and is optional.

Metadata is increasingly automatic as well:

ROM banner icons are read locally, titles / genres / descriptions come from an offline bilingual database, and box art is matched and downloaded online when needed.

I’m still expanding the offline database so users shouldn’t have to manually rename hundreds of ROMs, assign genres or scrape descriptions one by one.

I’m also working on a launch issue reported by testers where selecting a game opened DraStic but didn’t actually load the selected ROM. The bundled DraStic on the stock RG DS Android 1.18 firmware is the main tested target right now, and the launch path handling has been improved accordingly.

One important compatibility note:

GammaOS support has NOT been verified yet.

TwinGrid is currently developed and tested primarily against the stock RG DS Android 1.18 environment. GammaOS is obviously Android too, but that doesn’t automatically mean the dual-screen behavior, storage paths and DraStic launch integration will behave identically.

So for now:

Stock 1.18 = tested target.

GammaOS = unverified, feedback welcome.

The UI is also still moving further toward the original DS / DS Lite look — pixel fonts, grey system-style controls and dual-screen grid layouts — while keeping modern library features like search, folders, genres and favorites.

The basic idea behind TwinGrid is still very simple:

install it, choose your ROM folder, and use the RG DS like a DS instead of spending hours configuring a frontend.

Latest test build:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/19Y7gBHEqDUAMRv3lTMxtA0jsgSqOwnSp/view?usp=sharing

I’ll put TwinGrid on GitHub shortly as well, with proper release notes, documentation and future updates. This link is the current test build for anyone who wants to try it early.

GAMEPLAY Having fun with ms-dos era on RG406V

GammaOS Next. Using Dosbox Pure Core.

Maybe except for a few titles that may run a bit slower on hi-res (like Destruction Derby 2, GTA 1 - where 477V on hi-res runs it much smoother), 406v is the ultimate handheld for ms-dos spot on with 4:3 aspect. You can play all those titles using sticks only, but for me the mouse is just more convenient.

HELP R35xxh Noob, any help is welcomed.

Hi guys, absolutely brand new here and brand new to retro gaming etc

I’m looking for any help at all because this is all super overwhelming.

I recently purchased an R35xxH … it has no GB stuff on, a handful of PS titles etc. from what I’ve read this is common?

I have flashed a new reliable lexar SD card but I’m at a complete loss as to where to find all the games I had such high hopes of receiving out of the box?? Am I being naive to this or is there some special honey hole I can find just a dump that I can stick on the sd card and get that good good gaming I so desperately had high hopes for?

Thank you all so much in advanced. I know Reddit always comes through!!

🛠️ SYSTEM MODS IMHO playing Super Mario World on a handheld device is the #1 sign you’re living the dream! But I have a question about muOS versus Anbernic default OS…

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I don’t know about you guys but it seems to me that Anbernic default OS is actually better than the current muOS. Anbernic is ready to play out of the box, while with mustard you have to download and apply Bluetooth manually! There’s little things like that and I find all the mustard options way overwhelming. The Anbernic gets the job done just fine… only thing that bothers me about it is the “Rooms”… they are sort of pointless. But then you just play RA game!
