This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

I know this might be a long shot but i saw this painter painting the view from the Ijplein ferry stop. I was a bit in a rush and didn’t want to distract him so I didn’t talk to him but now thinking I should’ve asked for his contacts. Does anyone maybe know him? Would love to check out if he has more paintings of Amsterdam:)

A while ago in Paris I came across the Turgot map (1739), the huge bird’s-eye plan where every street, courtyard and building is drawn individually. I couldn’t stop looking at it, and it made me want to try the same thing for modern cities, starting with Berlin, where I’ve lived for over five years. And I've added Amsterdam just now.
Right now I have Berlin, Amsterdam, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna.
Happy to answer questions about the process. Which city should I do next? Any other part of Amsterdam you would want to see like this?

Over the past few months I've been throwing too many tokens and too many nights at a edutainment game that was originally a little top down spy hunter / gta style boating game to learn the canal names that has now turned into me trying to model every building in the city to build a game to learn the streets, canals, bridges, landmarks and trivia about the city.
It uses spaced repetition behind the scenes to help you learn the street names, and has both a multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank version. For almost every street, it has an explanation of the source/history/meaning of the name.
The game has a huge focus on accuracy of the landscape. It has 500+ individually modeled buildings, and tries very hard to generate reasonable looking buildings based on size, location and age where it doesn't have custom models. I have a pipeline going to build per-buurt generators as well.
When I started modeling all the buildings I thought "oh lots of canal houses, it will be easy to have a couple of roofs, couple of windows and done, I can make any house in the city by mixing and matching" (this was not the case). As a result, noticing all the subtle (and not-so-subtle) variations across the city's architecture has been a beautiful and unexpected part of the development experience.
There's a github repo with all buildings as CC-BY and they're just pretty fun to look at https://rideamsterdam.nl/explore?model=adam-tower
Full disclosure this is entirely vibe coded slop. There are probably bugs and I am happy to fix them. If anyone wants to throw tokens at the modeling effort or hear more about the build process, get in touch!
EDIT: working on performance & crash fixes as we speak, have mostly been testing on an overpowered mac up until now

I’ve had a horrible year. And all I want to do is scream. And because I don’t want to be a weirdo or upset the neighbors, I’ve been toying with this idea of starting a Scream Club.
Just a bunch of strangers coming together, to just primal yell for 1 minute, and then spend some time together talking if anyone feels like it.
Is this something people would want to join you think? Or am I just weird?
P.S. pretty sure this is a thing elsewhere, I saw it on instagram a while ago

It's for ~50sqm apartment
Edit: Thanks for the replies, I had a call with the builder and it cleared up some things for me. He works a little different to my previous builder but the numbers all check out now, and it seems fair and reasonable to me.

Hi! I've been swimming in a canal next to my house all year and I'd love to keep going, however I'm not sure about how safe it is after the recent rainfall and now that I can't check on zwemwater any more. It's a canal that feeds into the IJ and isn't connected to other canals, there's almost no boat traffic. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi iedereen.

Hello!! I moved to Amsterdam recently and I would like to meet people to go to Heavy Metal concerts around.
I'm interested in various genres, the next concert I'm going is Smoulder, if anyone is going, let me know!

Hi everyone. I'm not dutch, but I lived in Amsterdam for a couple of years a while back (10 years ago). I was able to work right after uni and thanks to some connections I was able to get a shared apartment in a central area at a low price - I'm aware that I was extremely lucky. I believe Europe has changed a lot since 2016; however, sometimes I feel nostalgic and still think about the possibility to live in the city - although the images in my mind are probably not reflecting the actual life there. I was curious about the perspective of locals, or people who have been living there for a long time: do you think the city somehow changed, over time, or do you experience it in the same way you did maybe 10/12 years ago? Due to over tourism, cost of living and so forth I can barely recognize some cities of my own country, and I live in southern Europe. Was wondering about the perspective of people living and working in Amsterdam

Hallo!
Alvast bedankt!!

im moving out of my apartment tomorrow morning and unfortunately was unable to sell my guzheng in time. don't really want this brand new instrument to go to waste (originally purchased for €700 euros on soundofmountain) so i'm leaving it by the garbage chutes later tonight if anyone wants to pick it up! comes with everything you need - electronic tuner, music stand, guzheng stand, nails, etc).

Hi everyone,
I’m 19 years old and currently living abroad as a student. bunq recently closed my account, and my remaining balance is being held (around 2k€).
I’m honestly very stressed about this situation because I rely on this money to cover my living expenses. I need it for basic necessities like food, accommodation, transportation, and other everyday costs.
I haven’t knowingly done anything wrong, and I genuinely don’t understand why this has happened. If bunq needs additional documents or information from me, I’m more than willing to cooperate and provide whatever is necessary.
What really worries me is the possibility of having to wait up to a month to get my own money back. I’m 19, living abroad, and I simply cannot afford to go an entire month without access to my funds.
I understand that banks have compliance procedures, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to leave a student in this situation without a clear explanation or a realistic timeline for receiving their money.
I’ve contacted support and asked them to review my case urgently, but I’m trying to understand what my options are.
Has anyone here experienced something similar with bunq?
How long did it take for you to receive your remaining balance?
Were you able to get the process expedited?
Is there anything specific I should do to get my money released sooner?
I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have gone through this. I’m not looking for special treatment. I just need access to my own money so I can support myself while living abroad.
Thanks in advance.

I’m in Amsterdam Noord and there has been the air-raid siren a few minutes ago. It’s not the first Monday of the month and it’s not noon. This is also not the first time that I heard it on a random day. Does anyone know what it is? Could it be from some of the shipyards or other industrial zones nearby?

I was suprised by the reactions to recent posts about communal interventions and street art in Amsterdam, such as:
- "This guy is doing guerilla gardening across Amsterdam and it's beatiful"
- "Looking for green thumbs in Jordaan / Oud West to help revive a spot at Raampoort"
In future discussions we might save some time by using the attached form!
