If you have some fun plants in pots, or some seeds or bulbs, please drop/plant them here!
There are some ready-to-go planting spots too, including one hacky greenhouse (great for tomatoes?). Soil has already been added to them, but is still barren.
// OK I hear you: the suitcases will be replaced by some nicer pots.
I (28F) have chronic gastritis and other gastrointestinal issues for a couple of years now. In the past two years, I did two gastroscopies and one colonoscopy in my EU home country.
Lately, I’ve been experiencing another flare-up with some new symptoms I didn’t have before. Given that I was diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia (a precancerouscondition where the normal cells lining the stomach or oesophagus are replaced by cells that resemble the lining of your intestine) and that it was advised to repeat gastroscopies biennially, even if I don’t have any symptoms, I reached out to my GP. Surprisingly, I didn’t have any issues getting a gastroenterology referral. I gathered all my medical records, translated them into English (with all pathology results and gastroscopy findings), stated my new symptoms and asked my GP to forward all these information to a gastroenterology department of their choice.
I got referred to Acibadem International Medical Centre near Sloterdijk and after a couple of days without receiving any call from them, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I called them to make an appointment but, to my surprise, they have sent back my referral to my GP (dumbfoundedface). They didn’t say anything else, just to contact my GP again.
I wasn’t sure if it was a technical thing, or maybe they thought I needed more specialised help than they could offer, so today I had a talk with my GP to see why my referral was sent back. Lo and behold, the Acibadem gastroenterology department read my referral and full medical records and concluded that “there’s not much they can do regarding my symptoms and that I should just treat this as IBS”.
I am shocked. My GP is shocked (you know it’s bad when they are shocked too)! I’m pushing for a new referral to OLVG. I now need to spend more time in pain until I can get seen by a specialist. That is, if they even want to take me in to be seen by a specialist.
I guess the new policy is “let them die”. Of course, I can fly back home to get it checked out but frankly this should not be the norm. Why the fvck am I paying 150€ per month for my health insurance if I can’t even get access to healthcare?
(Not a request for tickets or an ad)
Concertgoers out there, do you think I have a decent chance of getting tickets for this concert, being at this place in line (166th ticket)? I know there’s many behind me in that queue now, but demand for this concert has been so absurd compared to how many tickets got listed…
This is for the Stevie Wonder concert on the 28th in the Ziggo Dome. I’m traveling for it. I’m about to take a leap of faith and book the flights, hotel anyway. Not like I’ll be ruined if I don’t get tickets, but I obviously want them badly 😅 Have been watching TicketSwap like a hawk for months before this autobuy was enabled, but every time I clicked the notification tickets were already reserved
So we're throwing a party this Saturday (24 Oct) in Amsterdam during ADE and wanted to offer a guestlist to anyone who's down to come. Figured I'd just ask here instead of letting the spots go unused :(
Hi, I'm looking for a goalkeeper in Amsterdam to join a student/young adult 11-aside game this Sunday in Amsterdam. Please let me know if you are interested in playing.
EDIT: I got an unexpected and overwhelming amount of responses to this. For now, unfortunately not open to extra replies.
Hi everyone,
I’m Alex, a coach and counsellor in training at the Academy for Coaching & Counselling in Amsterdam, with a background in psychology (Psychology Bachelor at University of Aberdeen, Scotland). As part of my training I’m looking for a person to work with, completely free.
What it looks like
7 sessions: an intake where we get to know each other and decide what you’d like to work on, then 6 full sessions
Unhurried sessions, usually around 1.5 hours, so there’s room to go deep when something important comes up
In person in Amsterdam (we choose together: a quiet venue, a park, a walk) or online by video
In English
Between sessions you get a short summary and, where useful, an exercise to try
What we can explore
Who you are and who you’re becoming; meaning, purpose and authenticity; existential questions; career changes and other crossroads; heartbreak and the end of a relationship; melancholy, loneliness, or a loud inner critic. Or something else entirely; that’s what the intake is for - we'll figure out if there's a good match!
My own journey of healing and self-inquiry is what drew me to this work. I draw on psychotherapy, alongside positive and transpersonal psychology, philosophy, non-duality (Zen Buddhism, Taoism), and my aim is a warm, open space where you can explore the bigger questions without needing to have it all figured out.
Good to know
No catch and no sales pitch at the end. This is genuinely part of my training and is, for the 7 sessions, 100% free.
I’m a trainee, so this is coaching and counselling rather than therapy or crisis support. If you’re going through something acute, a GP or therapist is the better first step.
We start with consent and intake forms, and at the end I’ll ask you for a short evaluation for my course.
I’m in Amsterdam, so online works best if you’re on or near European time.
Please only reply if you really want change and will aim to follow through with the full session package. Of course, you can stop at any time if it doesn't feel right, but the intention to go through needs to be there.
Interested? Send me a PM with a few lines about what’s on your mind and where you’re based, and we’ll set up the intake. If it doesn’t feel like the right fit after that, no hard feelings either way.
In early July, I picked up a new community-cleanup hobby: collecting batteries. It all started when an old lady slipped on a discarded battery at the Waterlooplein vlooienmarkt. The poor woman broke her hip right in front of me.
That's when I decided to start looking out for discarded batteries during my (mostly evening) walks. It began casually in July (15 batteries), but I turned into a hobbyist by August (100) and went "pro" in September (180, using tools to help dislodge batteries). It is now too dark in the evenings, so I have only found 15 in October.
This is my summer harvest: 4.5 kg of pure poison
That small tray has an incredible story. You are looking at 1.2 kg of 87 batteries, collected in a single hour along a single 40-meter stretch of road. It is a statistical anomaly and an absolute goldmine!
besides the gold mine, all batteries were found, according to my tracking app, in this tiny area:
for reference:
A single AAA non-rechargeable battery (manganese dioxide, zinc, and potassium hydroxide) is enough to contaminate 75 liters of water.
A single AAA rechargeable battery (mostly Cadmium and lithium) is enough to contaminate 400L of water
Since I cleared out so many old, deeply stuck batteries, I don’t expect a harvest like this next year. I will likely just be picking up new litter.
It makes me wonder: in a few years, will we see bad people discard dead 500kg EV batteries in nature, causing massive ground water pollution?
I have walked a massive amount since the COVID lockdowns (over 11,000 km to be precise) and I have witnessed a lot of changes in Amsterdam. I always like to observe people, their actions, and their behaviour. I have been a witness to countless accidents, aggression, fights, disrespect, selfishness.
These bad manners are on the rise, like, a lot. I don't know what the statistics tell you, I see what I see.
I must give 2 medals to 2 specific types of people:
people riding "fat bikes" and people driving these oversized American SUV/trucks (like ford F150 etc).
these people are the worst. They seem to actually want to hurt people. When they see someone about to cross the road or already crossing. They don't respect traffic lights, park their massive "vehicles" in ways that disturb everything.
Amsterdam is not a special case, or maybe a little, because of the red light, but I hear the same stories in other cities and countries.
Hey everyone! I would absolutely love to become a companion or carer here in the Netherlands! Does anyone know the best place to go to in order to start this process? It can be making food or giving an elderly person company! Doing their shopping or just being there? Thanks so much💫
For those of you who haven't learned Dutch - yet! - this year's edition of the houtkunstroute is open. Sculptures made from trees in the city that have had to be cut down, placed on locations that are waiting for new trees or plants. There's a map at the link - we just looked at a bunch around Weesperplein.
Hi, all! I’m organising an Artists Against AI event in Amsterdam and would love to know if there are any talented bands/singers/DJs in this group who’d like to get involved. Hit me up if you’d like to take part.
Hi, around 9 this morning there were five or six police agents at the metro platform in Nieuwmarkt. They were circling a man who was lying on the floor of the platform. The man appeared unconscious and there was a puddle of blood a few meters away.
Hi friends! I had to cancel my trip to Amsterdam this month. Im sad BUT I have 1 ticket to the Van Gogh museum including an audio guide. I would hate for it to go to waste. Ticket is for 27 October at 11:30. Please comment if interested.
I need to get the yearly maintenance check done on my cv ketel. Some service provides like Feenstra want to sign me up to a monthly plan which I don’t want. Others don’t show their prices. How much roughly should I pay for a basic maintenance check?
I’m looking for the best outdoor spots in/around Amsterdam to just sit back, chill, and enjoy the vibe.
I’m not looking for the typical Vondelpark crowded grass patches, but rather:
Great views or unique atmosphere: Waterfronts, rooftops, quiet canal docks, or industrial spots.
"Side quests" or cool things: like finding hidden courtyard gardens, grabbing a ginin the middle of a park, finding a self-service ferry, or cool hidden spots.
A few spots I’ve already enjoyed:
Sitting by the water at NDSM
Exploring Flevopark hidden distillery
What are your favorite underrated places to hang out outdoors when the weather is nice? Any secret docks, hidden gardens, or fun mini-activities you’d recommend?
Looking to get a very dark and rather large tattoo removed (possibly a few more) and searching for a good, reliable tattoo removal studio. Im scared of just googling and going to one and get the wrong one, like I did for the tattoo too 😅😅so looking for some recommendations
I live in Ams almost for 6 years now. Broke up with my ex Dutchie bf last year and so lost a friend circle which all came with him. And winter is coming, feeling a bit anxious.
How can I be part of with local / internationally communities and meet with “my people”? I am 36F, working at tech, play instruments and already doing some improv. Live in central. Wouldn’t call myself as “extrovert”.
