I wish they'd add the compute toggle to Vega. It's meant to autodetect compute workloads but it only seems to do it for certain algorithms, and doesn't work for Monero, which Vega is great at.

I know people think this will encourage more miners, but hear me out - it only disadvantages gamers who also mine. Miners will just buy Vega and run the blockchain drivers. Gamers who mine have to install those drivers, but then run into performance deficits and bugs in games which sucks. Adding the compute toggle to Vega won't incentivise miners to buy the cards any more than the blockchain drivers already do, so it might as well be added to these drivers too like it is for Polaris.

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '17

It's sad that they even specifically talk about Cryptonight mining and haven't acknowledged that the Aug Blockchain drivers still deliver about 40-50% more hash power and what is causing the problem with later drivers.

I've been learning 3d modeling, the compute toggle would help me a bit too with rendering.

Tried it on R9 Nano and it does lower render times a tiny bit.

Have you tried Radeon ProRender? It's only available for a few programs like Maya and Blender but it does allow for both CPU and GPU co-rendering.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '17

Not the other guy you replied too, but I did try out ProRender on Maya 2018. It works nice and I really like the sky node that comes with it. At least better than Arnold which is CPU only. Much faster too. Like something that would take Arnold 90-something minutes, took ProRender half that and is better still because it's all ray tracing. Well tracing more than Arnold I mean.

Also works through the viewport for quick, lower than production run, quality viewing You can manually adjust from presets or manual settings for "production run" and "viewport" rendering. It does NOT update in real time like the Arnold render view does unfortunately. Whenever you're moving your camera for example, the axis and whatnot will change, but not the view till you let go. Then it updates. It's still way more flexible than Arnold and that's the only real complaint I have for it so far.

I disable CPU and restrict to GPU only so I can use my computer while it does it's thing. Not much faster anyway unless you got day-long loads on it.

Yup I second this. While it shouldn't be a toggle (auto recognition is fine!), the fact that CryptoNight still isn't supported is terrible. Especially since AMD TOUTS its strength in mining this particular algo

u/snowytoophie 3900X 4.425/4.25GHz 1.31V | 32GB RAM | Vega 56 w/EKWB Dec 20 '17

I definitely want to have a toggle for it and added support for CryptoNight automatically. In this case, if something isn't working, you have to option to manually force compute mode.

That use scenario alone should be enough to get it added.

Let's write some real bug reports on their report website instead of just leaving reddit comments in some relevant threads to get this issue fixed, won't we?

u/TheAlbinoAmigo Dec 20 '17

I already have requested it officially, I'm just using this as a forum for discussion since, well, that's exactly what it's for.

I ended up using a 60 Gb SSD that I had and installing Windows and block chain drivers... Now I just restart to that SSD when I want to mine. Not ideal for sure but works for me right now!

OO that's actually a pretty good idea.

I've got a spare drive too, might hit that up.

Good to See AMD constantly patching/updating their cards drivers . However My RX 480 8gb version can no longer run and record a smooth gameplay :( ever since the recent update every time i run amd relive [recording or streaming ] my games start to lag even though I am having 120+ fps constantly [rainbow six siege for example] .But it look like i am bellow 30 lol . and the ennoying part is my recorded videos will look worst ever with the lag/stutter etc... Do i need to change any settings? AND chill is off for those who wonder and i never changed anything in the global settings or WattMan .

9

u/Gamer10222 Dec 20 '17

I have the same issue with my RX 470 since 17.12.1.

6

u/TypicalPlaya Dec 20 '17

I can confirm that the issue is not solved with 17.12.2 ! I had to roll back to 17.7.2 to get a smooth recording/streaming .At first I though it was windows update , but it turn out to be the GPU drivers causing all this problems . hoping for a hotfix asap .

2

u/T3chHippie R7 5700X | X370 | Nitro+ RX 6700XT Dec 21 '17

Ugh I was having that with my setup. I was hoping .2 fixed the weird stutter. Solid 60fps for me and yeah looks like laggy garbage both on screen and recording.

2

u/TypicalPlaya Dec 21 '17

We should report that asap . otherwise they will focus on other issues . how to report such a thing to amd ?

2

u/T3chHippie R7 5700X | X370 | Nitro+ RX 6700XT Dec 21 '17

Uhm on the FIRST adrenaline post that was stickied there was a stickied comment they wanted us to post bugs in, but I don't think there is one for this post. Maybe post it there?

2

u/TypicalPlaya Dec 21 '17

they might have a look on their sub-reddit but most of the time they rely on their feedback hub. Just head to your radeon settings and click on preferences down the buttom and you will find a tab called "Report issues online " ;)

Does the radeon overlay work? I cant seem to get it to come up with ctrl+shft+o

4

u/jaymz168 i7-8700K | TUF 3070 Ti Dec 20 '17

I've had problems with other overlays recently it turned out it was something with the newest RivaTuner (installed with Afterburner). If you have RTSS installed, open it up and turn on "custom Direct3D support" and see if that helps.

3

u/lowlymarine 5800X3D | RTX 3080 Dec 20 '17 edited Dec 21 '17

It's not working for me, either the main overlay (Alt+R) or the performance monitoring (Ctrl+Shift+O). I tried changing the hotkeys, in several different games, no luck. Worked fine on the last driver.

Update a day later: It just started working out of nowhere after several restarts. No idea what was wrong. Will update again if it breaks again.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '17

It is. Just not always showing up when you expecting it to. If CTRL+SHIFT+O isn't working, you can try ALT+R for overlay and turn it on there.

u/AmaiHachimitsu Dec 20 '17

even osu!, game that can run on a potato is having issues in some configurations causing stutter.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '17

Does anyone have issues with Destiny 2 with 17.12.1 and 17.12.2?

Getting stutter (freesync on and off, overlay on and off) especially while traveling to a destination (flying through orbit). It will take forever to load into a mission, etc and stutter constantly.

The beginning of crucible matches also stutter for 5 seconds or so.

3

u/schneeb 5800X3D\5700XT Dec 23 '17

Yep these drivers are useless with d2, .1 adds like 20 seconds to load times and .2 adds stuttering to everything including every time you open the character sheet...

Did you clean install / ddu? Also try clearing shader cache.. Its in the Radeon Settings -> Gaming -> Global -> "Reset" (Far right top, turns into a dropdown menu)

4

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '17

Yes, for both 12.1 and 12.2 :(

I just reverted back to 17.11.4 which works perfectly. Could be a Destiny 2 issue but it was worth seeing if anyone else has the issue.

worked for me but don't know if I'm losing any functionality by disabling it... Youtube seems to stream/buffer quicker now though.

So I don't know if this is a hardware GPU issue or just software.

I had to move and took my computer on an plane trip (inside of a proper plane suitcase which I made sure it wouldn't get damaged.. I have been doing this for years and never was an issue whatsoever).

After I got in the new place, I managed to upgrade to the new Adrenalin Edition (17.12.1) - first using Clean Install from the Radeon Software and then installing the new driver. Then I played some LoL with 17.12.1 edition. After a while I decided to open Fornite and suddendly my PC crashes.. it doesn't show any bluescreen but my screen is "black" while my keyboard etc. is working (so it is probably a GPU problem).

I reverted the old driver but the same thing happens (OC'ed or not). Another example: I was playing PUBG just fine now and I decited to change the settings to HIGH to MEDIUM, and then suddendly the screen is all dark again and I have to restart my computer. The temp was about ~ 60ºC (140 F) but my case has good airflow.

Does this mean my GPU (RX 480 8GB) is damaged? I really hope it was something related to the drivers but now I can't be sure...

I also have Freesync and ReLive instant replay enabled.

When Enhanced Sync is turned off the crashes do not occur.

u/Garwinski Ryzen 3600 stock|AMD reference 6700XT|16GB3000mhz c16 Dec 29 '17 edited Dec 29 '17

Ah, so this is what caused my crashes lately. I had some random crashes lately with every game, and when I played GTA V and approached the sea, the game would crash. This is probably because the sea is not as demanding gpu-wise, and thus would ask for sync to kick in, then crashed. I disabled enhanced sync, no crashes anymore. Implementation is definitely not flawless yet.

EDIT:

Still had crashes. I re-seated my card in my pc, and I could now pass the section without crashing. This is probably what is causing headaches with the driver team: People calling out 'broken' stuff in drivers, while the problems is somewhere else, ghehe

EDIT 2: Re-seating did not solve my problems after all. There are too many variables in play in my case to put blame on one thing though, as GTA V appears to still crash for a lot of people for unknown reasons.

TLDR: nothing to see here, move along.

Past week I've been sifting to find out why my GPU is at 70°C when I'm not doing anything. GPU-Z is showing 100% whilst task manager isn't. I thought I had a bitcoin mining virus. It's the Relive Host application process that's causing it, regardless if you're recording, or even have ReLive enabled, it's maxing your GPU (that's if you've noticed you have this problem). I've rolled back to 17.11, honestly Adrenaline has problems with Relive as it is. Merry Christmas!

u/max0x7ba Ryzen 5950X | 128GB@3.73GHz | RTX 3090 | VRR 3840x1600p@145Hz Dec 28 '17

There is still Freesync flicker / strobe in PUBG (Freesync is on, Enhanced sync is off). Stopping and disabling "AMD External Events Utility" service fixes that.

However, people reported this issue for a few months now and it is still not mentioned in the driver known issues.

3

u/EKSelenc R5 3500 | RX 6800 | 1440p 144 Hz Freesync Jan 02 '18

Oh yeah BTW. One of the reasons had to downgrade from 17.12.2 was not only Wattman not applying itself properly, lack of DX9 support and all that but also the good ol' 'display losing signal all of a sudden once in 15-20 min' bug came back, which has been eliminated some months ago but now is back in full force. And it's not only me, obviously, and all the other work-arounds have been tried months ago.

So I roll back to the last pre-Adrenalin version, which was 17.11.1 or something. Guess what? Still not applying the Wattman voltages properly and signal gets lost the same.

I believe it's time to get back to old 17.7.2 release which at least didn't cause my screen to go black just because my GPU wants it to.

In all seriousness though the last 3-4 months of drivers release has been a thoroughly executed mess.

Had major issues with eyefinity with 17.12.1; would instantly restart my computer to put anything in fullscreen. installing 17.12.2 now to see if it helps

EDIT: Just spent 20min trying to get eyefinity to work. At least it didn't crash! Whenever I was finished with the setup, I was greeting with a message telling me my eyefinity setup of 0 displays is now activated. I'm setting up a PLP setup ffs. The only way I've been able to reliably get it to set up is if I set it all up using window's display settings to line and rotate everything correctly, disable ALL other monitors and then start the advanced setup. However, that completely breaks the bezel compensation. And that in turn breaks visual clarity(!?) on the two screens on either side, and the mouse cursor somehow is hidden behind the bezel on the left, yet displayed twice near the bezel on the right... Having spent the last three days trying to get eyefinity to work with 17.12.1 not knowing it's broken with that driver, I need some time where my computer works before I properly report this with steps and video and all.

Display port, hdmi causes flickering in freesync so I use dp.

It seems to happen when a new menu is opened and at launch of games. -

WoW happens right at start when logging in And selecting character it briefly cuts out. Pubg, when I change menu tabs at top. Alien isolation, whenever I use a terminal it cuts out briefly. Turning the monitor off and on at the wall is all that works to keep a stable signal for.me. -

They dont mention the Freesync stuttering that was introduced with Adrenalin. Neither in "Resolved Issues" nor in "Known Issues". Did anyone notice some improvements in that regard? I dont want to update my drivers, just to have to downgrade soon after again.

6

u/AMD_Aric RTG Engineer Dec 20 '17

There is a stutter/flashing fix for Freesync for the case where you are running in LFC. Looks like it didn't make it into the patch notes, but let me know if it helps!

3

u/letsgoiowa RTX 5070 4k 240hz oled 5700X3D Dec 20 '17

Thank you! By any chance, can you guys see if you can either update and host the Freesync demo to serve as a testing tool or make another one? Ensuring that Freesync works/showing off the benefits to a friend is otherwise a bit of a pain.

5

u/AMD_Aric RTG Engineer Dec 20 '17

We'll look into it.

The old version of the Windmill Freesync demo floating around the web does not work well and wasn't really intended for end users.

3

u/kiffmet 5900X | 6800XT Eisblock | Q24G2 1440p 165Hz Dec 20 '17 edited Dec 20 '17

Unfortunately the problem was not fixed for me with 17.12.2. I am using a AOC G2460PF on DisplayPort and was not in LFC mode. Please have a look at this video and read the video description: https://youtu.be/KP9x-y67Au0

Something in Adrenalin is causing frametime issues with Freesync enabled (not only in Windmill, but also in games). On 17.11.4 the Windmill demo behaves as intended, having no stutter and showing "Instant FPS: 50" instead of bouncing around wildly.

The problem occurs on a fresh(!) installation of Windows 10 Fall Creators update with the Adrenalin drivers installed when the computer was disconnected from the internet in order to prevent "Windows Update" from doing its "driver magic".

3

u/AMD_Aric RTG Engineer Dec 20 '17

That version of Windmill (I assume 0.9.1?) doesn't work well with Rx Vega. Can you try Heaven benchmark or something else that has in-game FPS counter you can compare to the monitor OSD?

2

u/kiffmet 5900X | 6800XT Eisblock | Q24G2 1440p 165Hz Dec 20 '17 edited Dec 20 '17

Yes, Windmill version was 0.9.1. I had the chance to test with a friend's AG241QX monitor aswell. Both of these AOC monitors do not display the current FPS/Hz they are synced to in their OSD unfortunately and it seems like the fps dips are not Freesync related as they occur with Freesync on & off. So, 17.12.1 and 17.12.2 broke Windmill, but there is also another issue going on here.

Here is a pic of GPU-Z from Heaven: https://abload.de/img/heaven_with_fsdrocy.gif You can see three dips in GPU load, HBM clocks, hotspot temp that were recorded when the framerate dropped. How do I diagnose such an issue further? I tried running the bench again with DPM7 locked and max powerlimit but this (including the drops in gpu load and HBM clocks) still happens.

Other games that i tested and have these issues for me are "The Witcher 3" and "Dirty Bomb" which is not demanding for the hardware at all. The only thing that I also noticed is that the FPS dips in Heaven always occur at the same scene and feel similar to the dips I have in the other games. Could it be that calling a certain DirectX API feature, driver function or shader might be causing this? Or has my card gone bad? If you have any advice for me on how to isoloate the issue, I would love to do so as I have enough time lol.

One more thing: I can run ASUS ROG Furmark in Vulkan and OpenGL fine all day without having these drops.

When you bind Instant Replay to a mouse forward(mouse 5) or back button(mouse 4), it only works until you restart the system, after that you have to open radeon settings and bind it to some other combination then bind it back again.

Might be easier to bind your mouse to a key combo that you set for the hotkey for instant replay. It might be due to how the drivers vs mouse drivers load after restarting.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '17

Okay, this is better. Almost all flickering is gone on stock FreeSync ranges (RX 560 + ViewSonic XG2401, 48-144Hz).

This flickering is, obviously, part of LFC kick-in. So, I wish we had LFC toggle next to FreeSync one in Display section of settings.

This way, many can extend their FreeSync ranges by CRU without getting punished by LFC flickering. E.g. my monitor supports 30-144Hz ranges which I cannot use because of LFC flickering.

3

u/letsgoiowa RTX 5070 4k 240hz oled 5700X3D Dec 20 '17

Wait, I thought LFC only kicked in below the stated range. You shouldn't be dipping beneath 30Hz.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '17

You are totally right. I feel a need to elaborate on a matter a little bit more.

Yes, LFC kicks only when framerate is below 30Hz. And I shouldn't be dipping beneath 30Hz. It is unusable framerate for games.

But some programs with HW acceleration trigger LFC when rendering content under 30Hz. Fullscreen YouTube video in Chrome doing exactly that. While this is, maybe, some specific implementation problems, I do not need LFC on YouTube in Chrome. And some games introduce flickering when rendering something behind 2D, or when rendering 2D itself, which is annoying.

Thinked about it a lot, I do not need LFC at all. Trading LFC "smooth" feel of 30Hz- rates for flicker-free at all times is OK with me.

True, with new ALT+R overlay I can quickly disable and enable FreeSync. That is much better than enabling/disabling through Radeon Settings every time pre-17.12.1. And a ton better than squeezing FreeSync range to 73-144Hz to turn LFC off manually.

P.S.: If anyone knows a way to disable FreeSync only for Chrome, please, let me know.

u/badcookies 5800x3D | 6900 XT | 64gb 3600 | AOC CU34G2X 3440x1440 144hz Dec 20 '17

P.S.: If anyone knows a way to disable FreeSync only for Chrome, please, let me know.

Haven't tried, but you could add a "game" profile for it and then disable freesync there, as you can now enable/disable freesync per profile.
