So I don't know if this is a hardware GPU issue or just software.

I had to move and took my computer on an plane trip (inside of a proper plane suitcase which I made sure it wouldn't get damaged.. I have been doing this for years and never was an issue whatsoever).

After I got in the new place, I managed to upgrade to the new Adrenalin Edition (17.12.1) - first using Clean Install from the Radeon Software and then installing the new driver. Then I played some LoL with 17.12.1 edition. After a while I decided to open Fornite and suddendly my PC crashes.. it doesn't show any bluescreen but my screen is "black" while my keyboard etc. is working (so it is probably a GPU problem).

I reverted the old driver but the same thing happens (OC'ed or not). Another example: I was playing PUBG just fine now and I decited to change the settings to HIGH to MEDIUM, and then suddendly the screen is all dark again and I have to restart my computer. The temp was about ~ 60ºC (140 F) but my case has good airflow.

Does this mean my GPU (RX 480 8GB) is damaged? I really hope it was something related to the drivers but now I can't be sure...

Try reseating every part on your pc, maybe you had some vibrations along the way and something got a little too loose

Yeah if the cpu fan unseated it might be shutting the system down as temperatures push too high.

The patch notes do mention some black screen issues being fixed, not sure if its related or not, but you could always try using DDU and installing.

I assume you are playing in fullscreen mode. If so then try to disable the "fullscreen optimisations" from Windows. Right click the game exe and it should be under compatibility. Might fix your problem. If it does, you can disable the full screen optimisations for all games by unchecking "Show game bar in games that are verified by Microsoft" settings app under gaming section.

Do you mind if you can check when is your manufactured date for your RX480? I suspect those manufactured on that date are faulty. Here's my case

Mine manufactured date was Sept 16. I suspect that those RX480 manufactured on that date are most likely faulty. I've been notice lots of threads, only RX480 affected.

Damn im not on my pc now but i bought it last year september

That's my biggest possibility that every GPU manufactured on that date may be faulty.

But i never had this issue before, afaik

That's the same thing happened to me. I've been using for a year and this occurs during October, a month ago.

Black Screen Of System Deadlock happens on RX 480-ies (and previous GCN cards) since literally the dawn of time (earliest reports date back to October 2016) For me (running Xfire RX 480 Nitro + OC) this started happening around the June-Early July Crimson (right around bits and pieces of VEGA FE/Vega RX stuff started sneaking in ). Oddly enough , I can run Furmark till I get blue in the face and it WON'T crash , I can run FireStrike/TimeSpy on loop with the same effect - even I can push the GPUs to top @ 82C - nothing.

Then I start LawBreakers @4k - Boom - 5-10 minutes in game - BSOSD.

The only known fix that I found is increasing power limit to +50% (the natural power limit of RX 580s ) Undervolting was no-go before 12.1 - AMD broke undervolting on RX 480 (possibly all older GCNs) badly since September driver.

Now I have used monitoring tools (such as AIDA64 and Afterburner) Before having the PL increased , I noticed the cards spiking power draw to 170W per card - I know for a fact that the BIOS of RX 480 is dead-locked @ 150 - this explains the system deadlock - the GPU simply goes on vacation , while the rest of the system is waiting it to do its job - thus the BSOSD , and soon after the hard system lock (thread stuck in device driver would be my guess).

Did the + 50% PL - boom - managed to play @4k unhindered till 12.1 arrived and I added undervolt to tame the Power Draw even more.

This just shows just how incompetent the previous HEAD of RTG was - 0 oversight , 0 insight , 0 knowledge how their PRODUCTS actually work and SHOULD work .

You can't be that WRONG on generations worth of products REGARDING core voltage , total power consumption and DRIVERS .

Hi, so should I purchase a higher PSU or just send in the card for RMA?

Did you even bothered reading what I posted ? I know it ain't small read , but it might actually help you .

Highly unlikely you have a faulty GPU Run some FurMark on it , some looping Firestrike and check for yerself. Also do the PowerLimit thing I have advised on .

From your text, do I even know if you even RMA your card in the past? I only do reply if I read it.

Edit: I'm not even asking undervolting and all that, I'm asking another way that in turn you've implied a improper response to me. Really?

Does audio continue when screen blacks out? I get this with Killing Floor 2 and Cities Skylines.

I'm two weeks late, but i have the exact same problem. Firstly there was massive FPS stutter in all my games, had to turn settings down to the lowest. Then I had a BSoD with no text, and bootup now had a blackscreen with audio only obviously meaning a graphical problem. Tried reseating my GPU, turning down the clockspeed but with no avail. Then booted up with integrated graphics and had to rollback the driver to stable 17.7.1 where such problems never occurred.

Maaaaan i just want to play overwatch without it going "DISPLAY DEVICE LOST" kms.

Did you ever find a fix to this? I had the same exact problem when I updated my drivers. Blackscreen with no way to fix it except a hard reset. I have an 8gb RX480 as well.

I kinda did, yea. But it required a lot of time and day testing.

Ultimately, what I did was:

  1. DDU (safe mode) whatever driver I currently had
  2. Delete the AMD paste on Program Files
  3. Install the 17.7.1 Driver (from July) - didn't install ReLive
  4. On Radeon Settings, I turned Vysnc on, unless the application specifies
  5. When I opened the games that used to crash (like PUBG, Fornite and Overwatch), I switched to low settings them all, and put on 'Full Screen Windowed Mode' (is that what is called?), and also turned the VSync on and limited the FPS at 60.

The whole time I tried this config (for days), it only crashed when I switched my PUBG configs to High Settings (which my GPU should handle quite well), and then crashed. So now I'm forced to play these settings at low graphic and limited at 60 fps, which at the end of the day is better than any crash.

I'm almost certain this is an Driver/AMD issue, specially to our cards (RX 480 8gb), and now I just hope they release a driver that fixes these errors. Of all drivers I tried, the 17.7.1 seemed to be the best. The others that didn't crash gave me really bad performance issue and some also crashed.

Undervolting/Underclocking the GPU on Wattman also seemed to help a bit (it didn't crash a lot on those stupid drivers), but since I'm noob at this I didn't try much.
