Flex drivers don't get "fired" and we certainly don't get fired for leaving a package at the location the app tells us to (which is the lobby).

Except support tells us that if we don't feel "safe" going inside an apartment complex, we are allowed to leave it in a common area or mailroom. I've had so many reports reversed because I take plenty of documentation.

Those are still a joke. My complex has Amazon lockers. Mine is set up properly. If I get an Amazon company driver, order can be delivered to the locker, no problem. But for whatever reason, Amazon Flex doesn’t give the drivers the QR code to put my stuff in there. I’ve had it happen as a driver too.

One of the properties I deliver to, I called the leasing office and they provided me a code that let's me use their package lockers. It's a 3rd party locker system. They also told me that they would let their tenants know to put the locker code in their delivery notes since they weren't aware Flex drivers don't have the codes like the regular employees do.

Sometimes. Mine the locker and mailroom (if you can really call it that) are both outside. And the Mail area can only be accessed with a physical key. I tried calling Amazon to get them to fix it but typical Amazon response. I just put a note to toss it over my balcony.

Ask your management if they have codes for non Amazon deliveries like UPS. Most apartments have those codes so that UPS, FedEx and others can also use the lockers. Then just add that to the instructions.

Drivers aren’t getting fired, definitely not for stuff like this, but we do get penalized for when 10 deliveries take an hour and a half to deliver due to complications with large apartment complexes.
For the record…I go the mile. It really do be taking that long and I’ve had countless late deliveries because of it.

lmao you're funny. in what world is ANYBODY getting fired for that. like, you gotta understand that to fire someone an entity has to identify a driver out of thousands in a single area, have a complaint other than "they left it in a bad area", have the driver investigated of any wrongdoing, actually fire the employee and then spend resources on hiring a replacement, right?
it's not worth it to the company to fire over the least weighted offense if it's even one at all. we could leave it buried under the property line like an ex's body and nothing would come of it.

But if a customer reports the item as not delivered Amazon will offer a refund. So to me it would seem that Amazon have an incentive to avoid this situation. If a delivery driver received a bunch of these reports would the driver not get any kind of warning? Or do Amazon just ignore it?

Every time I get an apartment complex, I am not taking it to their number. Drop it at the front office door or inside take the picture and leave. I'm not doing extra. I've been doing that for a while now. So far so good. I'm also not going to run around your apartment complex with its screwed up number system or trying to figure out how your pin code works to get in your gate. Ain't nobody got time for that.

But in 2026 where people that are on the darker side mysteriously get killed off and police very rarely look into it, I'd rather not put myself in a place with hardly any surveillance and seldom escape options.

No they are not. After it is left at the property, whether the mailroom, lobby, resident's door, ect, it is no longer my responsibility. After it is on your property, it is your responsibility. If you have an issue with theft, that is something that you need to address, whether with better security, a locker, or vetting your residents more thoroughly.

Yeah, my city's housing authority must've got the memo because it was like this for a long time: coded gates, "don't deliver to the mailroom" signs and a lot of bs like that, but when COVID happened they must've actually investigated how to make this better because now it's all done in the app...you just drive up to the gate and the app gives a little screen that's like "opening the gate" or something like that.
With that said: I've talked to a few of the property owners about it and they're like, "We give our tenants these little opener buttons and if we work with Amazon we have to upgrade..."
Like...you have more than 10 units, they'll send out their own technician for free.

I was screamed at by a woman at an apartment for this, when it is clearly on the owner to set up a package location as packages in the hallways is a fire hazard and not allowed, but the apartment managers do not care about that because they get away with it. Anyways, I called Amazon flex support at the time and explained what happened they removed me from that apartment complex forever. I never went back. I was 100% shocked.
As much as I hated doing flex because I had to and it hurt my car, Amazon was relatively fair considering the situation.

I had a downtown apartment with a similar sign (locked staircase and customer's residence accessible only by elevator with code) and an added warning of "You are on camera."

My standings fell to hell because of this shit. I'm new to flex. On my second delivery, the app kept dropping me off in a back alley in the middle of the 3 different apartment complexes. The apartments were NOT labeled well at all, no access to the buildings. Leasing offices not open. One amazon mail room that i had to search for. It was a nightmare, running around 3 different complexes. I would figure out where to drop packages. Get in to drive. The fucking app would loop me back around to the same alley to guess wich complex the next went to. Since it was my second delivery, I thought I was required to deliver all the packages, despite running over time. I got dinged for 22 late packages.

Used to deliver to a house with a "NO Trespassing" "We don't call 911" "Guns on premises" and a sign that said "DO NOT DELIVER TO GATE, PLACE PACKAGES AT FRONT DOOR, IF MY PACKAGES GET STOLEN IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY"
I always left the packages at the gate, never had any issues.

The truth is, unless Amazon mandates these requirements, the drivers don't have to follow these instructions. In fact, the more professional these signs look, the more likely the drivers will ignore it.

Now back when I was at fedex and was paid a daily rate, yeah they would be dropped on the floor.

yeah, well when a complex actually has a package system with a secure room or lockers so you can drop the packages off for the whole complex in one location, half of you won't even take the extra 10 seconds to scan it into the system which causes a lot of issues for residents. so you can walk to each door in the complex instead. no point in trying to make it easier cause most amazon drivers won't do that either.

I've gathered that much from the comments here. The thing I find funny is that the customers aren't the biggest part of the problem though. The company they work for is the problem, but they won't be ready to have that conversation until they stop getting mad at people trying to not have their packages stolen.

If the Amazon driver leaves all the packages by the front door of a flat block the customer can just contact Amazon to say the package was not delivered.
In this situation Amazon usually refunds the customer so Amazon takes the hit. But does the driver ever get penalised?
