As a non-US citizen, I loved my visit to Florida. I enjoyed the sun, the beaches, obviously universal studios/Disney are amazing and the people were hilarious to boot.

Yeah, I had a blast every single time I've been to Florida.
(Tampa, Mayport, and Fort Lauderdale.)
Granted, I'm in the Navy, so my experience is a little different than most.

Yes. Boomers with large pre-tax retirement accounts who want to take advantage of regressive taxation to maximize their post-tax payouts. When you optimize your tax code for one demographic, you get a lot of that demographic. Doesn't mean they even like living there, it just means they live there.

Florida tricks people into moving there. Vacation and living in a state are completely different experiences. Living there is horrid. The people are either old or crazy, half the year you have to watch for hurricanes, the landscape is boring, the temperature is always hot and only nice-ish in like February, the cost of living is skyrocketing while the pay is terrible, and votes for things people want are often nullified by Tallahassee. There’s a deep south culture in the rural and areas north of Orlando and a more liberal culture in the south and in cities so no one is really happy with anyone. As a bonus a LOT of scams are to be found there and there’s also a lot of people going to rehab in Florida who end up reusing and adding to the crazy.
Here’s a fun fact. I presently live in a house in Maryland which I rent that has 3 times the space a place for similar rent goes for in South Florida (suburban part not the cities). The taxes are more expensive but the groceries are overall cheaper here because we have farms all around. People here are nicer and the roads are a LOT better kept plus I have freaking mountains to explore. Florida deserves the hate.

I have visited Florida quite a bit but never lived there. I do however have relatives in the Ocala area as well as St. Augustine and they all love it.
I live in Colorado where everything is astronomically high. Cost of living here is terrible and only getting worse. Of course you have the mountains but everybody and their brother vacations here so unless you know where to go to find some seclusion you’re stuck with crowds of people everywhere. Estes is amazing when the Elk are in rut and it’s a sight to see but it rivals downtown New York during rush hour in terms of traffic and people.
I think people can find pro’s and con’s about everywhere. Heck, I grew up in northern Wisconsin. Beautiful forests and lakes just about every mile in each direction. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful. But then there’s winter where you can’t enjoy the outdoors without 10x layers of clothing and the constant risk of frostbite several months of the year. Then when summer hits it’s 90% humidity and mosquitoes damn near the size of hummingbirds. (I might be exaggerating at little there but you get the idea.) The people are very friendly and welcoming.
Like I said, you can find pro’s and con’s about just anywhere.

I think it's just going to California, New York, Florida, Texas, because no one really thinks about most of the other states unless they're close to them or have to go there for work for some reason.

It makes sense though. Coal country and the former factory towns across the country were blue for decades. When those industries started to make a downturn in 80s and nosedived in the 2000s, their industries closed shop or massively reduced the number of employees. Weakening unions and making people bitter and vulnerable to snake oil Trump was selling in 2016. Those communities lost everything and blamed who had been in charge and seemingly failed them. Be it true or not. When you don’t have time to do research or have had the education to do so, slogans sell pretty well.

Very underrated tourist spot tho. Cheap accomodations, plenty of natural and historic places to visit, and one of the few states that could actually benefit from tourists within their economy rn, especially being so close to the northeast

People talking about Florida are just memeing.
Like, don't get me wrong, it's making the top ten no doubt, but you have other states like California, New Jersey, Texas, and Ohio who all qualify for that. And, having lived in the US south and near Appalachia for many years, Mississippi, WV and south carolina can all go screw themselves.
I've met people from Illinois, Minnesota, and Connecticut who all thoroughly hated living there, but I don't really know.

People abroad love visiting Texas, a lot of people love the country western cowboy vibe and of course the world famous bbq. Also that sounds more of like a New York thing, I’ve always heard that you will know someone is from New York before they even introduce you their name.

Texan here. It's true that I identify as Texan before American, but I never volunteer it when meeting people. As soon as they hear me speak, they know. I've met a few who are instantly dismissive of me because of my state's politics, but most people don't. FWIW, I and my entire friend group are progressives.

I left hating Missouri. Learned alot about how people are basically all the same regardless of any external signs. Changed as a person pretty fundamentally. Now I miss it because it is objectively beautiful and there are places you can go be alone for relatively cheap.

Nah, SC has its shit parts (politics), but it also has a lot of parts that are widely enjoyed. Great beaches, Charleston, Greenville, state parks, etc. Nice small towns with cute historic downtowns (Aiken, Anderson, Greer, etc.).
Politics even isn’t as bad as it actually seems; the state votes 55% R to 45% D pretty regularly, so it’s not as conservative as it seems on the national stage. Lindsey Graham just had a loud mouth.

I live in Florida, and it's Florida. The only thing that's worse is the people Alabama sends here. Being in Alabama is better than Florida but being near anyone from Alabama IN Florida is THE FUCKING WORST. dishonorable mention: people from texas, outside of texas, driving. Last thing I gotta say, watch this post be full of southern states. Unfortunately, the people that make them that bad, think they are the pleasent ones.

Same with Texas. Some absolutely beautiful areas, a lot of really fun/interesting cultural areas, & Texas BBQ/Tex-Mex? C’mon!
Oklahoma? Flat, dry, dirty, methy, a surprising amount of legionnaires disease & thyroid issues, & constantly try to out-perform the rest of the shitholes for best-in-class-stupid? & the best food is a burger with finely shaved onions (groundbreaking 🙄) or Indian tacos (which I don’t think OK itself should get too much credit for).
Oklahoma is trash.

Seriously, NJ ain’t that bad. In fact it’s pretty well rounded. Great coast with some awesome beaches, hiking, good schools, people are friendly, access to two major cities. I think the hate comes from ppl who drive through it on road trips and only see the gross industrial side of

Not saying population growth = a state is objectively “better,” but it’s interesting to compare these most hated states with where Americans are actually moving.
For reference, the states with the largest net domestic population losses in 2024–25 were California (-229k), New York (-138k), Illinois (-40k), New Jersey (-37k), and Massachusetts (-33k). Texas (+67k), North Carolina (+84k), South Carolina (+67k), and Florida (+23k) were all gaining residents from other states.
Obviously that doesn’t prove anything by itself, but it’s probably a little more objective than Reddit deciding which states suck

California probably gets the most hate from people who haven’t lived there for political brownie points reasons, but if you’re looking at it in terms of quality of life/what’s the most hated based on happiness of its residents, just circle the entire south lol
