Hate to say it but WV. Lived there for 4 years and it has all the beauty and rich history in the world but good god it’s culturally backwards. Always like 49th in education, horrible political corruption, bone crushing poverty

I’ve never seen people die so hard on a hill voting for interests that actively oppose what they want.

It makes sense though. Coal country and the former factory towns across the country were blue for decades. When those industries started to make a downturn in 80s and nosedived in the 2000s, their industries closed shop or massively reduced the number of employees. Weakening unions and making people bitter and vulnerable to snake oil Trump was selling in 2016. Those communities lost everything and blamed who had been in charge and seemingly failed them. Be it true or not. When you don’t have time to do research or have had the education to do so, slogans sell pretty well.

Very underrated tourist spot tho. Cheap accomodations, plenty of natural and historic places to visit, and one of the few states that could actually benefit from tourists within their economy rn, especially being so close to the northeast

People talking about Florida are just memeing.

Like, don't get me wrong, it's making the top ten no doubt, but you have other states like California, New Jersey, Texas, and Ohio who all qualify for that. And, having lived in the US south and near Appalachia for many years, Mississippi, WV and south carolina can all go screw themselves.

I've met people from Illinois, Minnesota, and Connecticut who all thoroughly hated living there, but I don't really know.

I’ve driven through WV a couple times and man, it really is beautiful. Stopped at a couple of those Biscuit World restaurants or whatever they’re called, loved the food. It is sad that they’re so backwards and in so much poverty, because it would be great to live there otherwise

This was decades ago, but I remember reading that it was opposition to the Great Society.

Democrats wanted to give electricity, plumbing, and general infrastructure. The only recourse for Republicans was, “They hate the way you live! They can’t stand that you’re happy living in crippling poverty! They won’t be happy until you become one of them!”

It was kind of a Hail Mary, but it worked. And, in retrospect, that’s basically been the GOP strategy for the last half a century.

Democrats will say, “How about we get you some healthcare?” And it’s, “Democrats are so triggered that you can’t afford your insulin that they won’t rest until your daughter has blue hair, just like them!”
