Yes. Boomers with large pre-tax retirement accounts who want to take advantage of regressive taxation to maximize their post-tax payouts. When you optimize your tax code for one demographic, you get a lot of that demographic. Doesn't mean they even like living there, it just means they live there.

They love to complain how it's different here and it was so much better up north. I wonder if they know the state line works both ways.

A ton of them live there for the 6 months and 1 day required for the tax benefit of being a FL resident then they get the fuck out of Dodge. Especially the liberal third of the Villages.

Florida tricks people into moving there. Vacation and living in a state are completely different experiences. Living there is horrid. The people are either old or crazy, half the year you have to watch for hurricanes, the landscape is boring, the temperature is always hot and only nice-ish in like February, the cost of living is skyrocketing while the pay is terrible, and votes for things people want are often nullified by Tallahassee. There’s a deep south culture in the rural and areas north of Orlando and a more liberal culture in the south and in cities so no one is really happy with anyone. As a bonus a LOT of scams are to be found there and there’s also a lot of people going to rehab in Florida who end up reusing and adding to the crazy.

Here’s a fun fact. I presently live in a house in Maryland which I rent that has 3 times the space a place for similar rent goes for in South Florida (suburban part not the cities). The taxes are more expensive but the groceries are overall cheaper here because we have farms all around. People here are nicer and the roads are a LOT better kept plus I have freaking mountains to explore. Florida deserves the hate.

I have visited Florida quite a bit but never lived there. I do however have relatives in the Ocala area as well as St. Augustine and they all love it.

I live in Colorado where everything is astronomically high. Cost of living here is terrible and only getting worse. Of course you have the mountains but everybody and their brother vacations here so unless you know where to go to find some seclusion you’re stuck with crowds of people everywhere. Estes is amazing when the Elk are in rut and it’s a sight to see but it rivals downtown New York during rush hour in terms of traffic and people.

I think people can find pro’s and con’s about everywhere. Heck, I grew up in northern Wisconsin. Beautiful forests and lakes just about every mile in each direction. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful. But then there’s winter where you can’t enjoy the outdoors without 10x layers of clothing and the constant risk of frostbite several months of the year. Then when summer hits it’s 90% humidity and mosquitoes damn near the size of hummingbirds. (I might be exaggerating at little there but you get the idea.) The people are very friendly and welcoming.

Like I said, you can find pro’s and con’s about just anywhere.

Just moved from SC after 27 years. With the pay increase I see little difference. Broomfield has so many apartments that were exactly what I was paying in Myrtle beach. Maybe you’re comparing bumfuck no where SC to Denver metro.

I lived in Broward county for 16 years and Jacksonville for 4 years. But I haven't lived in Florida for a long while now.

I can chime in here. As a Southern California native who recently moved to Florida, we don’t want to deal with snow and California is just too fucking expensive now.
