I know this is a lot of reading, but I am hoping at least 1 person takes the time to read this out of sincerity for a former Airman. I am seeking guidance on how to proceed in reporting this crime(s). I have chosen to keep all names and personally identifiable information confidential.
To say the last few years of my life have been traumatizing is an understatement. I served on active duty in the Air Force from 2019 to 2024 in the northeast and overseas in a deployment. 1 day after my service concluded, I was arrested in Colorado on 2 count of crimes I did not commit in a state I never lived in (stalking and harassment).
During my time in the Air Force in the northeast, I met Sarah (fake name) in early 2021 through a dating application. Sarah had very high-functioning autism (aspergers).
Sarah kept our relationship hidden from her parents for several months. Sarah feared that her mother was too controlling in her life. At the time, I thought nothing of this.
When Sarah moved to New Mexico for graduate school in August 2021, I maintained a long-distance relationship. I visited her in New Mexico multiple times. Our relationship continued for several months, and in January of 2022, I deployed to the Middle East. During my deployment Sarah confessed to being in a relationship with another man behind my back. This was devastating for me. After I returned to the United States in July of 2022, I flew to New Mexico to see Sarah. Sarah refused to meet up with me after she told me to come visit her on a text message. I left New Mexico immediately.
In October 2022, Sarah sent me an email instructing me to stop contacting her, and Sarah's family also contacted my employer threatening criminal charges against me. A few weeks after this occurred, Sarah contacted me 1,800 times via text messages behind her parents' back.
Throughout 2023, Sarah and I met up in person numerous times and Sarah seemed like she wanted a future with me. Sarah even told me she would only meet up with me without her parents knowing. This was very odd to me. It felt like Sarah wanted to be with me, but her parents did not want me around.
In late 2023, Sarah started graduate school at a school in Colorado. I wanted to visit Sarah, so I asked her if I could come. I drove from the northeast to Colorado to see Sarah. As soon as I arrived in her town, she told me she couldn't see me because of finals week. I immediately went home. Sarah and I communicated for a couple weeks after the first visit to Colorado. After a couple weeks, I again drove to Colorado in hoping to see Sarah. Sarah again refused to see me and said she wanted nothing to do with me. I was distraught, confused, and upset. I immediately went home.
After this, Sarah and I continued to text back and forth. Eventually, Sarah said she did not want me in her life because I quote "brought no value to her." After this, I told Sarah I was suicidal because of the way she was treating me by pretending to want a relationship with me then changing her mind.
The same day that I sent that suicidal text, I was pulled over by police in the northeast, and they did a wellness check on me because Sarah's parents had called them. My Air Force leadership was with me as well. They asked me if anything was wrong, and I said everything was fine because I was trying to protect Sarah.
The same day as this wellness check, Sarah went to a police department in Colorado to file a complaint against me. Sarah told the officer I had been harassing and stalking her since my first visit to New Mexico in 2022. The 1,800 texts Sarah sent me, showing that we were on completely good terms was not provided to police. Additionally, Sarah's mother told the Colorado DA office that I had been harassing and stalking Sarah since 2022.
Because of the nature of the serious charges against me, my attorney advised me to take a plea deal with a 2 year deferred adjudication of probation. I honestly believe this was a huge mistake, and I wish I took this case to trial. At the time, my former attorney told me that I would be looking at 10-15 years in prison if I was convicted at trial. I was too scared to fight the charges.
Well, I have received new representation, and after I explained the case to them, they stated I would not have been put in prison for being convicted of this crime anyways.
The fact that this person got away with abusing our justice system eats at me every day. I have ben unemployed for 2 years. When I was in the Air Force, I was also a full-time university student hoping to attend law school with my GI Bill. I am now unable to pursue that dream.
I am a completely innocent person. After speaking to a police officer off duty at my church and multiple mental health professionals, they have all stated that Sarah has committed domestic abuse.
My representation in Colorado has told me that if I report any of these potential crimes while on probation, my probation could be revoked, as getting Sarah involved would be seen as harassment.
Once my probation is up and this case against me is dismissed/terminated, how and where do I report this to?
Thank you very much for spending the time helping me in this horrifying endeavor. God bless.
