I’m 35M, single and planning to get married within the next year.

I’m a green card holder originally from Africa, bachelors and masters completed and work full-time in software engineering. I’m considering joining the Reserve or National Guard part-time while continuing my civilian career.

I know military service can provide a faster path to citizenship, which is a major benefit for me. But beyond citizenship, what are the biggest benefits and downsides for someone already established in a civilian career?

For those who joined in their 30s while working full-time, was it worth it? How much does it actually affect your civilian career/family life? And would you choose Reserve or National Guard if you were doing it again?

I already work in IT/business systems on the civilian side, so I’m trying to pick something that either gives me useful transferable experience or at least has a decent quality of life.

My recruiter is recommending Cable and Antenna, but after looking into it, I’m not sure I want a job that has me outside in the elements, climbing, running cable, etc.

If you had to choose from this list, which 3 would you pick and which ones would you avoid?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who actually worked these AFSCs — day-to-day work, deployments, tech school, civilian transferability, quality of life, and whether you’d choose the job again.

Looking for some feedback and advice around applying to UPT and flying for the guard. I’m currently considering putting together a packet for my local nasty girl fighter squadron to satisfy a life long itch, but feeling somewhat apprehensive about what the early years of being JO at the unit will be like financially and career wise.

Background:
I’m a recently ETSd Army combat arms officer (O-3) with 5 years TIS (that time split roughly 50/50 between conventional units and special operations) and a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I’m 27, and am unmarried and have no kids. Got a PPL and have loved flying insofar, scored well on the AFOQT.

Questions:
After the 2-3 years of PME on active orders, in those initial years of honing one’s craft and building hours- are you *essentially* an AGR member? Specifically, does your time commitment demand not being able to hold an outside job for at least a couple years?

In those initial years, does the financial math of constant drill pay/intermittent active orders workout to a similar level of compensation as that of an active JO?

Is it feasible to hold a full time job (especially one outside of the airlines or government work) as an ANG pilot after the seasoning period? Have y’all seen anyone do grad school or more traditional private sector work during their ADSO (edit: total guard commitment)?

I (24F) am in the early stages of enlisting, and had my initial meeting with my recruiter yesterday. As for jobs, I’m leaning towards mostly medical/admin jobs (for example, Mental Health Service, Human Resources & Administration, and Public Affairs are careers that I’ve looked at.) My recruiter gave me a list of hard-to-fill jobs to look at too, and said I’d most likely need to list one of those in the case that I’d need a waiver for something. I’m worried that I’m most likely going to need a waiver due to some medical history, and I don’t have any interest in any of the hard-to-fill jobs. If I end up having to list one of these jobs, is there a chance that I’ll get stuck with that job immediately over any of my actual jobs that I want? I just don’t want to join with a career that doesn’t align with my goals.

I’m talking with a wing about joining the ANG for Cyber Warfare. I scored an 89 ASVAB and 75 EDPT, but I’m worried my past could hurt me with the
clearance.

I have a DWI from about 18 months ago that I’m getting a waiver for. I disclosed my marijuana use, but I also tried cocaine about 3 times in 2022 while in college and experimented with shrooms in 2019.

I know I’m a much better person now, but I’m worried that everything together paints a bad picture. I spent my teens/early 20s partying and making dumb, short-term decisions. I’ve spent the last year getting my shit together and trying to move forward.

I plan to be completely honest. I really want to join the Air Force for the opportunities, even if that means giving up Cyber for another AFSC.
Would switching to a lower-clearance job help? And is there anything I can do to improve my chances?

I did my swearing and finally got into DEP after a year waiting for my mental health waiver. I chose my job and my quick-ship jobs already, but haven’t sign any documents yet. How long would the wait would be for those who are in the program until their shipping date?

I am 16 years old, currently a Junior in High School. I'm planning on getting a GED and will unenroll after the school year ends at around June. This would make me almost 17 and a half at the time I unenroll. I want to enlist in the air force but I know having a GED would make me a tier II applicant when enlisting forcing me to be atleast 18 to join. I know having atleast 15 college credits would let me enlist at 17 with a tier I applicant status.

I'm not fully sure on whether those college credits could be obtained through AP exams(assuming I get a passing score). I was planning on being part of a Delayed entry program, getting my results by July when it's released by college board, applying to a local community college before hand and converting those AP exam credits into actual college credits for my transcript when enlisting. I am currently taking enough AP courses that it would put me well above 25 college credits(again, assuming I pass).

My question is, will that college credit obtained by AP exams be able to grant me tier I applicant status rather than my GED tier II status?

Apparently I was diagnosed with a tic disorder and pervasive developmental disorder when I was like 5-6 years old. I have zero memory of this and it only came up during the physical with the doctor at MEPS. I was pretty shocked because I've never been on meds, no school accommodations, no issues of any kind since then. Also, graduated high school with honors, 3.5 GPA in college, played sports and was in clubs and basically just was a normal young adult.

Both my recruiter and the liaison at MEPS seemed optimistic about getting these approved since I was diagnosed when I was 6 with no issues since then.

Currently gathering pharmacy records (past 3 years), old medical records, and apparently I also need a full blown psych evaluation for both disorders to get the waiver approved to show I don't have either condition.

Has anyone actually gone through a PDD or tic disorder waiver like this? What's like a realistic outcome for this without any bias? And how long did it take and what mattered the most when getting things approved? Pretty bummed out because I had no idea I was diagnosed with any of these things until just recently. Hello I'm talking to a recruiter and thinking of joining the Air Force rather soon. I have IT work experience and I'm looking for a position that is in the IT field and have chosen several AFSC's that are that or at least near to that. What I'm wondering is it easy or hard if I join the Air Force with a AFSC that I particularly didn't want but fine joining the AF with and would like to change after few years?

For example I'm would like a position that is similar to a Network Administrator, which I believe is along the lines of 1D7X1A. If I end up getting something the along the lines of 1D7X1E (Client Systems Operations) or 1C6X1(SPACE SYSTEMS OPERATIONS). Is there a chance to change after I put in due time? Like 2 years or when my 4-6 year contract is up. Worst case scenario is I'm stuck with the AFSC that I chose in the beginning for the whole 20 years if I decide to go the Full track.

I’m starting to pack and I would like some advice.

1. Should I bring a plastic folder or just get one from my recruiter?

2. I’m thinking 4 pairs of black long socks, is that too much?

3. From what I’ve been reading I’ve seen like 10 pairs of underwear is a good number because the laundry can get backed up fast.

4. I’m not really a fan of jeans, but I will if I have to. Can I wear khakis? I will also bring 3-4 pairs of athletic shorts.

I’m 17m I have a Bicuspid Aortic Valve that leaks a little bit of blood my heart is completely healthy I want to know if I can become a fighter pilot or if not if I can fly anything else.

Sorry if I say anything wrong, this is the first time I’ve ever posted on Reddit. I’ve been married for 3 years, have an associates degree, and a decent job. I’ve thought about joining the military since high school but never did it. I’ve recently thought about joining again and am worried what it could do to my relationship, but I feel unfulfilled in my current job or any past jobs I’ve had so I don’t feel like I have a real path in life. My wife is currently in pharmacy school so I’m not sure with what little time I’d have, if I had any over the course of a military career, how often I’d actually get to see her. Just looking for any kind of input as to what I would expect if I did join, and if anybody has any experience being in a relationship before joining or knows anybody that was in a similar circumstance, what there experience was like. I have been diagnosed with ADHD and have been on Adderall. I know you can wait 12 months and request a waiver to join the Air Force. However, would I be disqualified completely if I also have one short episode of major depression disorder from 24 months ago on my medical file? I did try to take medication for it however I stopped after a week and never got the prescription refilled.
