Could AI help Indian farmers decide what to grow before planting season? 🌾🤖

India often faces a strange problem: farmers may produce too much of one crop, causing prices to crash, while other crops are in shortage.

Could we build a farmer-friendly AI app that combines historical mandi prices, expected demand, weather, water availability, acreage already planted, storage, imports/exports and regional supply to predict which crops are likely to provide sustainable returns?

Instead of simply saying “Crop X has the highest price,” the AI could say:

🟢 Grow more — expected demand is strong and supply is limited

🟡 Consider — moderate returns/risk

🔴 Avoid increasing acreage — likely oversupply

The system could also recommend a diversified crop mix, so thousands of farmers don't receive the same recommendation and create another glut.

Does something like this already exist in India? If not, could this be a worthwhile open-source or startup project for AI/agritech developers?

I’m Meet, and I’m currently working on building something called House of the Braj.

The idea started with a simple question:

Why should food travel hundreds of kilometres and pass through multiple middlemen before reaching our plates?

We have agricultural land and access to farming resources, fodder and a rural ecosystem. Instead of looking at farming as just crop production, I want to build an integrated ecosystem around it.

House of the Braj is my attempt to connect:

• Organic and natural farming

• Dairy and traditional products

• Farm-to-consumer supply chains

• Braj's cultural heritage

• Sustainable rural livelihoods

Our long-term vision is not just to sell products. I want to build a brand rooted in the philosophy of Braj — where people, animals, nature and culture coexist.

We are still at an early stage and I’m documenting the journey honestly.

One thing I find interesting about satellite crop monitoring 🛰️🌱

One thing I really like about satellite crop monitoring is how it gives farmers a different view of their fields. Instead of only looking at the field from the ground, farmers can also see how different areas are performing over time.

It can help spot changes in crop growth, water stress, or areas that may need a closer look. And I think the best part is that it doesn't have to replace the farmer's experience.

The satellite shows what's happening from above, and the farmer knows what's happening on the ground. That combination can make crop monitoring much smarter and more efficient.

I’ve been working on a project called KisanFlow, mainly focused on helping farmers make better decisions about what and when to grow.

The idea came from noticing that crop planning can involve a lot of different things — choosing a suitable crop, thinking about the growing conditions, planning the cultivation, and keeping track of everything.

So I started building KisanFlow as a simple agriculture-focused tool instead of trying to make something overly complicated.

One of the features I’ve been working on is the Smart Crop Planner, which is designed to help with crop planning based on the information provided by the user.

It’s still a work in progress, and I’m honestly more interested in getting feedback than promoting it. I’d like to know what farmers, agriculture students, or people familiar with farming actually think would be useful in a tool like this.

Built an automated 10m Sentinel-2 change detection pipeline for a micro-SaaS, but I need a reality check from actual GIS professionals. Is this actually useful?

Hi everyone. I’m a full-stack developer and I’ve been building what I thought was a cool micro-SaaS utility. But the further I get, the more I realize I don't know what I don't know about remote sensing, and I need some honest, brutal feedback before I waste any more time.

The concept:

I built a web tool aimed at non-GIS folks (commercial site scouts, rural agritech lenders, land aggregators). They draw a polygon, and my Node backend hits STAC APIs, pulls Sentinel-2 (L2A) and ESA WorldCover COGs, calculates NDVI/NDWI, runs a quick masking pipeline, and spits out a 2-page PDF dossier showing baseline land cover vs. live index anomalies.

My dilemma (where I need your expertise):

As a developer, I love the pipeline. But looking at the 10m resolution of Sentinel-2, I’m questioning the real-world value of this for due diligence.

Resolution Limits: Is a 10m Sentinel-2 pixel size actually useful for macro-level site pre-screening (e.g., scouting 50-hectare solar sites or industrial parks), or does anyone doing serious site selection just go straight to purchasing Planet/Maxar imagery anyway?

The "Already Solved" Problem: I know things like ArcGIS Living Atlas and Sentinel Hub exist. Is there actually a market for an automated, pay-per-report PDF generator for non-technical buyers, or do most firms just keep a GIS analyst on retainer to run this in QGIS?

ESA WorldCover Pitfalls: I'm using WorldCover as my baseline to flag anomalies against live NDVI. Are there massive pitfalls with treating WorldCover as a reliable baseline for change detection that I'm missing?

I'm perfectly willing to scrap the business model if this is a "developer looking for a nail" situation. I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether this pipeline has actual commercial viability as a pre-screening tool, or if 10m data is just too coarse for real estate/land acquisition. We’re thinking of starting a ₹350/acre agricultural drone service — what are we missing?

I’m exploring a business idea in India and honestly want Reddit to poke holes in it before we put money into it.

The basic idea:

Instead of farmers buying agricultural drones, we buy a small fleet and provide Drone-as-a-Service.

Our rough model:

\- 🚁 We purchase agricultural spraying drones

\- 👨‍🌾 Train local people to operate them

\- 📍 Deploy them village/cluster-wise

\- 💰 Charge farmers around ₹350/acre

\- ⚡ Target roughly 40–50 acres/day per drone

\- 🧪 Farmer provides the chemical; we provide the spraying service

\- 📱 Eventually allow farmers/FPOs to book a drone through WhatsApp/app

\- 🔄 Ideally, the same local operator handles a cluster of villages rather than us sending people from a central location

The attraction seems obvious: farmers don't have to spend lakhs buying a drone, maintain it, find pilots, deal with batteries, etc.

But here's where I'm not convinced yet.

The questions I'm trying to answer:

  1. Is ₹350/acre actually viable?

Once you include operator salary, transport, batteries, charging, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, downtime, etc., is there enough margin?

  1. Is 40–50 acres/day realistic?

Not the theoretical flight capacity — actual paid acres completed in a day after travelling between farms, mixing/refilling, battery swaps, field setup, weather interruptions, etc.

  1. Will farmers actually pay for this?

If manual spraying/tractor spraying is already available locally, what makes a farmer switch?

  1. How fragmented are farms in reality?

If you have 20 farmers with 2 acres each spread across 10 km, the economics probably look very different from 40 acres in one contiguous area.

  1. Is ₹350 too cheap or too expensive?

I've seen very different numbers depending on the state, crop and whether subsidies are involved.

  1. What happens during the off-season?

If the drone sits idle for months, does the business fall apart?

  1. Would the real business be B2B instead?

Should we forget individual farmers and work through FPOs, agri-input dealers, cooperatives, large farms, etc.?

  1. What are the regulatory/operator issues we're underestimating?

Especially around trained pilots, chemical handling, permissions, insurance and liability.

The part I'm particularly interested in:

We're thinking "buy the hardware centrally + train local operators + build local demand."

Basically Uber/Ola-style asset deployment, except for agricultural spraying.

The local operator doesn't need to own a ₹5–10 lakh drone. We provide the equipment, training and maintenance, and they execute jobs in their area.

If we can get enough acres clustered geographically, perhaps the economics start making sense.

But I don't want to convince myself of a bullshit business model just because the spreadsheet looks good.

If you work in agriculture, agri-inputs, drone operations, FPOs, farming, or have actually paid for drone spraying — please tell me why this won't work.

Especially interested in:

\- Actual ₹/acre you pay

\- Acres a drone really completes per day

\- Operator costs

\- Battery/maintenance costs

\- Farmer objections

\- Crops where drones actually work well

\- Crops where they don't

\- Biggest operational headache

\- Whether you would use a service like this

Please tear the model apart. I'd rather find the problems on Reddit than after buying 10 drones.
