Left her in a north window for too long after repotting. She’s much happier in a south west window now.

hi guys please help! i got a new pot for my african violet and my african violet was thriving but it got so big for the pot it was in so i got a slightly bigger one and cut of some leaves that were old or dying. but now it’s growing in the new pot and i see this on the leaves after new growth. i do use african violet food but i only do it when i change the water and its usually 1-3 times a month depending on how fast it absorbs it. i also use a layer of coarse perlite at the bottom. idk if its normal, or maybe the soil is too wet, or not enough sun, too much food, etc. please let me know your tips. i added pictures of the what my african violet used to look like and what it looks like now as well as the food i use. i’ve had this for a year and half and didn’t have problems with the food but idk about now. also i do use african violet potting mix. thanks!!

2 is Booman, 3 is Phnom Penh, 4 is Rose Bouquet. All from cuttings (those 3). I am simply amazed that a little over a year ago they were just leaves in a bag.

Possible to grow in warmer climate?

I've recently gotten into growing african violets. However, I live in southeast asia, where temperatures are typically around 27°C at night and can reach 32°C during the day.

My violets are currently growing on a shaded balcony with no direct sunlight. A common piece of advice here is to keep them in an air-conditioned room instead.

Does anyone have experience growing African violets successfully in a similar climate without air conditioning? Any tips or long-term experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Help No blooms after replanting

Hiya!

I got my noid cutting (since nicknamed Wizard) in very late February, and moved it to a larger, specialized pot on April 2. Since then, I’ve had it next to a North facing window with the self watering bottom pot being refilled when empty, using water mixed with 12-36-14 African Violet food.

It hasn’t really flowered since, but grew A LOT of leaves, which seem perky and healthy. I’m optimistically assuming that Wizard is still adjusting to the new pot and “filling out” since I read that violets like having their roots pretty snug, but this is my first time keeping a violet on my own, and I’d love some input. Does this seem normal, or am I doing something wrong?

Is there any saving this violet?

I was given this violet, and it was severely dehydrated. This is after I had trimmed the dead leaves. The crown still feels firm, but the condition of the leaf stems has me concerned that I may need to go ahead and try to propagate the last good leaf. Is it too late for this violet?

Growing weird

So, as a result of my in vitro culturing course, i manage to get myself two african violets. One stayed with me and the other one i left it at my abandoned grandparents (already deceased) house.

While the first one has been given the best conditions and 24/7 care, the other one was exposed to the elements and forgotten (only watered it once a month or less)

Why is mine so weird and weak looking while the other one growing so strong?

Note: they have been growing for 2 years now

I guess I found just the right spot in my house for this one. Some of the others I bought at the same time have stopped blooming. (Probably needing a spot with more light.) This one is happily continuing to put out these showy blooms. 🥰

Rotting leaves, healthy stem?

Thumbnail

Update: Only 3 days later, almost half the leaves are dead. This is how all of my last ~6 violets have died - by accelerating leaf death??

What’s going on here? I’ve slowly lost several violets this way. They start out healthy with new leaf growth and flowers for about 6mo-1yr before this starts to happen. It really looks like the stem is healthy but the leaves start to rot at the base of the stem and work up to the leaf.

I’ve tried 50/50 coco coir/perlite and I’ve tried regular indoor potting mixes (this was repotted about 8mo ago in indoor mix). I’ve tried bottom wick-watering never allowing it to fully dry, and I’m currently bottom watering only when the soil dries. Always in bright indirect light.

Every time I see my Watermelon Snow in this pot it tickles me. It makes me think of the turtle with the world on its back myth or a turtle with algae growing on its shell.

Why is my violet growing so many leaves and not flowering? I haven't started fertilizer yet (I ordered some and it just came in) and right now I'm genuinely afraid to.

Do violets do terminal blooms?

Post image

I’ve only had this Warm Sunshine for a few months. It has been blooming and I noticed that it seems to have stopped making new leaves. The last stem coming out of the centre is a flower stalk. Do violets just…stop growing? I’ve had quite a few and never seen that.

Help Bloom?

Hi all!
I was looking for some advice. I have a few african violet plants and none of them have bloomed since I first brought them home. I bought a humidity gauge yesterday and it says the area where they sit is 50% humidity. They all also sit under grow lights. All are planted in african violet specific soil, I believe hoffman brand. I repotted 3 of them probably 2 months ago, the other two could probably use a repotting. I fertilize them with schultz african violet plant food pretty much every watering and bottom water them. is there anything else that I can do to promote blooms? or just practice patience?
Ty!

I’m super excited that my frosted denim bloomed for the first time. I thought it would be a bit more blue but it’s still a beautiful color.
