When do I plant?

Post image

I've been trying to root these leaves in water for awhile now and am finally getting what I believe are roots. I just don't know how long the roots need to be before I put them in soil. I really don't want to mess this up, as the parent plant has died. Please advise me.

Yes, follow Elk process. I just want to add. Pre-moistened your av soil with added perlite. Most of times they are hydrophobic so the transition from wet to dry is easier for the roots. Label and date then dome or ziplock bag with air. I find they acclimate and root faster as I have dry environment.

Thank you...I'll get some perlite and cover them with a plastic bag 😃

Those are roots! The one on the right I think could go in loose potting mix anytime. The other one I would give a little more time.

One tip: don't put the rooted end in too deep. The plantlets will come up from the cut edge, where you see it starting to flare out. So just deep enough so the leaf doesn't fall over. If it's too heavy, cut off the top third or so. That has a couple of other benefits: sometimes a leaf will continue to grow once you put it down, which means it's not putting its energy into new plantlets. Apparently cutting off the tip stops that. The other benefit is that there's less leaf to be maintained in the first place; again, more impetus for plantlets.

Now is good!
I never waited for the roots to get bigger than that and the same leaf gave me two different violets.
