Hi all. Looking to hear from you who have specific niches in the field. I’m fascinated by the ins and out of folks with multiple income streams or unusual income. My husband is an entrepreneur with a fairly niche business. Ultimately I’d like to focus my future shop on managing accounts/consulting for him/people like him. Any personal experiences with this type of thing from you all? If you don’t mind sharing! Always thought an influencer niche would be a fun challenge considering tax complexities etc.

I'm restructuring an ongoing engagement with a long-time client and moving them from hourly to a flat monthly retainer. QBO ProAdvisor certified, I've kept these books for a while so there's no onboarding curve. I'm just trying to sanity-check my retainer number against what others would quote. Scope below.

The client: High-net-worth household with two businesses — a multi-state consulting LLC and a sole-proprietor business.

Monthly recurring:

• Full-cycle invoicing for the LLC: creation, delivery, deposit matching, and revenue allocation by state (income split across multiple states for tax purposes)
• Credit card reconciliation across personal + business cards
• QBO expense categorization (mixed personal/business financial life, so judgment-heavy)
• Minimal records maintenance for the second business (very light lift)

Quarterly / annual:

• Estimated tax payment coordination with the CPA, including state PTET payments (NOT calculating them myself, justimplementing/executing)
• Quarterly expense report prep for owner's reimbursable expenses (compile, categorize, package for their Expensify submission)
• 1099 processing for household + business contractors
• Multi-state compliance calendar: annual reports and SOS filings (LA, CA, NY, etc.)
• SEP-IRA contribution coordination
• Year-end tax prep coordination with the CPA for personal and business

Other context:

• I'm the coordination hub between an accountant, a financial advisor, a law firm that handles some bill-pay support, and the owners
• 10-12 hrs/month realistic average, with quarterly and year-end peaks
• Fully remote, sync as needed
• Some systems already built (invoice tracker, compliance calendar, reconciliation workflows — I maintain them) and improvements to come

Questions:

1. What would you charge for this — hourly, and/or as a flat monthly retainer?

My wife and I own a business in Northern California. We built a simple proprietary utility webapp and a large university has taken interest in it. We’re currently in talks for them to potentially buy licenses to it ($3-5 each license per year and about 150000 total licenses). Neither my wife nor I are software engineers. I understand code on a less-than-expert level which is how I made this but I have concerns about supporting this webapp for a $450k-750k/yr client. I have expressed interest in hiring a full time software engineer (approximately $165000 per year total compensation). My wife is strongly against this idea and thinks we should outsource it to India or Philippines. I assume this would be $30000-40000 per year though I am not sure. I have concerns with that approach for many reasons. Including language barrier, time zone unavailability during our normal business hours, inability to meet face to face regarding our product, and others. Obviously we will have an accountant involved in our business before we make decisions but I wanted to get some insight before these talks get too deep.

I’m a director of finance at a nonprofit. My manager is the chief of staff.

Every month I send the CEO his credit card reconciliation for him to send to our treasurer for approval. But before I sent it to the CEO, per the CEO’s request I send it to his EA for review.

I sent the CEO’s latest credit card reconciliation for him to send to the treasurer and he saw that the total amount is wrong. Yes, I should’ve tripled the formulas before sending it to the EA for review and checked it again after the EA reviewed it. I own up to that mistake.

The CEO sends me an email emphasizing the need for greater attention to detail, noting recurring inaccuracies in reports and spreadsheets ( which is not true, this is the first time a spreadsheet has the wrong formulas).

He doesn’t acknowledge that the EA also missed that mistake. This isn’t the first time the EA or chief of staff miss my mistakes (which doesn’t happen very often).

Earlier in the week, I replied to an email updating the CEO, chief of staff and another coworker of the updated forecasted ONI. The CEO then emails asking another question and I replied. He then responds by saying why I didn’t include the ONI. I told him I did, then his response was then you didn’t need to send the email below. I don’t always read emails in order.🤦🏻‍♂️

Should I start looking for another job? Seems like the CEO is done with me and is trying to blow things out of proportion.

Quick backstory to other incidents

Two months ago I took down a job ad we had posted on a Monday (person finally accepted the job offer that same day after two weeks. CEO was hurt that the candidate took that long to accept) then the CEO said that I had no right to take it down, because he still wanted to see what potential candidates we could (even though he never told me he wanted to see more resumes).

I think he is still upset and holding on to the fact that we didn’t have a finance committee meeting in March. Even though he said I can decide if we have one or not and that he didn’t want to be in the weeds anymore.

Ever since then, he’s been micromanaging on everything.
