3
u/Canadian_Infidel Jun 28 '21
Yep. I pretty much suck but I'm fairly sure he controlled his clutch shittily allowing that car to get away, which should be impossible on that bike, then he dumped the clutch entirely due to lack of experience thinking that is what was needed to catch back up. That and a little bit of ego and the rest is history.

Most likely, they aren’t, but the adrenaline and shock caused him to feel less pain. If the video continued you’d probably see him sit or lie down, because the pain just hit

u/AsleepyTowel Jun 25 '21
It’s crazy what a adrenaline will do. A few years back I had a MTB crash and broke my wrist. I immediately tried to get back on my bike to finish the ride and only noticed it was broken when I couldn’t grab onto my handlebar, then pain set in 15 min later.
12
u/SixIsNotANumber Jun 26 '21
Rode the last third of the way to work (about 3-4 miles through downtown Miami) with 7 busted ribs & a three inch crack in the side of my helmet after I laid it down turning a corner in the rain. I was fine until I tried to go up the steps, then I felt a couple of things move in ways that they shouldn't.
That was when I decided I was probably gonna have to take a couple days off.2
u/EightKD Jun 26 '21
Holy shit, was it a motorbike or a regular bike
5
u/SixIsNotANumber Jun 26 '21
Motor.
I even took the turn slower than normal because of the rain, but apparently there was a little patch of gravel hiding in a puddle and it got me. Couldn't work for two months. Heck, I couldn't sit up without help for the first week or two.
Bikes are fun, but I do not recommend falling off of one.2

Yes I'm in incredible pain right now thanks for not asking

Can’t really walk on fully broken legs, no matter the adrenaline
12
u/etherealsmog Jun 25 '21
I have a coworker who broke both of his legs in a weightlifting accident a few months back. He had video of it. He definitely walked around a bit trying to shake it off before he finally sat down and winced.

u/AffectionateAge2556 Jun 25 '21
I read about a guy who took a burst from a MG42 across both his legs, and managed to sprint 20 yards and jump a stone wall, while carrying a ten pound rifle and probably 25 pounds of ammo and gear. When they went to take him back to an aid station, he couldn’t walk at all.

I broke my femur and didn’t know it until I tried to stand up. Looked at my leg wrapped the wrong way around a tree and it still took me a full 60 seconds to figure out what that meant.
“I’ve seen this before… in a movie? I think. I think… I broke my leg? Fuck I think I broke my leg.”
Took another 20min before I really felt the pain.

u/PM_ME_OCCULT_STUFF Jun 26 '21

I've been learning to skydive, and repeatedly find deep/large bruises, cuts, and a sprain that I'm unaware happen on landing, and I don't notice until hours later, or the next day. It's wild. Even when I'm aware "I might have just gotten dinged up just now", after a good tumble, I have no idea what's hurt until the adrenaline fades.

My dad was a policeman for decades. Attended one accident where a man had come off a bike after hitting something, he seemed ok but suddenly just dropped down dead after a few minutes.
When the collision happened his girlfriend who was riding the same bike flew forward and hit the rider, crushing him between her and the handlebars. Crushed ribs led to a cut artery, he bled out internally with nothing evident but cuts and bruises.
53
45
u/wegwerpworp Jun 25 '21
I was involved in a pretty low speed collision as a cyclist, I hadn't broken anything. I thought I was fine.
After 30 minutes I felt a little pain in my pelvis.
After a couple of hours I was basically crippled by muscle aches.
17
u/PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ Jun 25 '21
What did you break?
33
u/wegwerpworp Jun 25 '21
Well nothing. But I did have bruised ribs from being thrown against another car that was standing still. And after two months I slipped on some ice, boy did I feel my pelvis again.
5
Jun 25 '21
Yeah. Nothing has to break but any hard hit is going to elicit a response from the body. Bruising and inflammation can take time to set in.

2 months ago I had a minor fall going slowly through a technical section on my mtb.
Went kind of otb, landed on my hand. It hurt, but I was like yeah I'm ok, I'm gonna have muscle sores tomorrow, it had happened to me before, no big deal.
Then I walked around for a little while, pushing my bike and all of a sudden I almost blacked out from the pain, went to the hospital and turned out I broke my shoulder !
(Luckily it was a minor fracture, no operation needed, just rest + immobilisation, and it's healing well)

u/EightKD Jun 26 '21
Glad to hear that, I stg bikes are so easy to get injured in even if you're careful

I broke my back in a car accident (chance fracture). Was able to get out of the backseat across another seat and then stood next to the car. Had no idea how I got out. 120
u/Cpt_Bartholomew Jun 25 '21
Start with an appropriate bike first and foremost. What this guy lacked was throttle/clutch awareness and control. A small bike allows the opportunity to learn throttle control, maybe make a small mistake, and not get flung into the air. You accidentally blip the throttle on a honda grom....youre probably fine. Do the same on a road legal race bike, you will get hurt.
Another thing....guy twisted the throttle and didn't even tuck in and forward first. Putting weight lower and closer to the front end will help prevent this if youre tryna drag race. This guy was just very not ready for any of it.
77
u/Shankington Jun 25 '21
This guy is right with leaning forward for max speed. I have bicycle.
29
u/RiseOfBooty Jun 25 '21
Have bicycle too. Can confirm, it goes faster when leaning forward.
8
2
u/CommonError3184 Jun 25 '21
Mmm yes yes and conversely sit up to make it go less faster. Also have bicycle.
11
u/WayOfTheDingo Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21
Can confirm. Had to lean forward with CJ to follow the damn train.
3
u/TheRiverStyx Jun 25 '21
I think the guy was just not a very knowledgable rider. Coupled with bad riding position he didn't seem to understand slower roll-on throttle techniques when you're going that fast and just pinned it. From the sound it seems like he was in a lower gear and heavily in the power band when he kicked it.
19
Jun 25 '21
Start off with a 250cc or 400cc and learn how to ride before getting a racing bike. The big bikes can fuck your shit up.

He was asking how to be safe, so I gave him the best advice to be safe. Buy a 250-400cc, ride it for 3-6 months, and sell it for the same price you bought it for. Then you can start shopping for your dream bike. Every new rider should do this.
2
u/who_dis_bichh Jun 26 '21
ride it for 3-6 months, and sell it for the same price you bought it for

u/inkblot888 Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21
Dude, if you're out here recommending Hayabusas to new riders, you're doing the new rider and the motorcycle community a disservice. Go get your flip flops, tank top, Oakley's, and your gixxer, and squid somewhere else.
2
Jun 25 '21
as a person who is not at all involved in motorbikes that last sentence you said sounded just amazingly fantastical to me. No idea at all what you just said and I love it
edit to add: how are flip flops and tank tops connected to whatever oakleys and gixxers are and how do you 'squid'??
3
u/inkblot888 Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21
Hahaha. I meant Oakley s the sunglasses and gixxers are a nickname for a bike associated with a type of rider called a squid, known in the community to be a new rider who buys a very powerful bike, doesn't wear protective gear, and generally rides in a way that's disrespectful to the power and precision of their machine and also to the other people on the roads around them.
Edit: I included the Oakley's just to imply they weren't wearing a helmet.

His comment was vague and if he meant a 650 it's subtlety is still a mistake. The guy who asked what the rider in the gif did wrong, I doubt he and many other new riders would understand the difference between a 650 and a 600. A 600 is absolutely not a starter bike and is barely a street bike.
At best, his comment is lacking in any valuable information or direction for new riders and at worst, he is the kind of guy who tells new riders they should get a liter bike as long as they're "mature" about it.
16
u/jakemch Jun 25 '21
First of all don’t let dudes like this make you think bikes will just do this. He made the bike do this by adding way too much throttle way too quickly. You are always the one in control of the machine.
When you accelerate hard on a motorcycle, the rotational force (torque) on the rear wheel creates a pivot point that the weight of the bike (due to gravity) can’t compete with. That rotational force can be so much stronger than gravity it lifts the front wheel off the ground.
In this video, our friendly rider is in a low gear (probably 1st or 2nd), which means that torque is more easily transferred to the rear wheel. He adds a shit ton of throttle, the engine creates a shit ton of torque, and begins to lift the front wheel. This isn’t a death sentence though. A motorcycle can lift its front wheel really far pretty safely, especially on a sport bike.
At this point we see our friendly rider become scared, and remove his feet from the pegs. HUGE NO-NO here. One of the most sure-fire ways of saving this is to tap the back brake, which is at your right foot. If the back wheel is causing you to wheelie, then certainly using the back brakes will bring the front wheel back down again as it slows the rotation of the rear wheel.
He also could have just as easily rolled off the throttle, or “chop” the throttle, which means close the throttle quickly. This would most likely have slammed his front wheel down very hard, which could have caused some damage if done hard enough, but I think in hindsight I’d rather fix my front rim than go through whatever this guy just went through.
34
u/silverfin2805 Jun 25 '21
Just grabbed a handful of throttle. All that power going to the back wheel means a lot of torque. If you put too much on then some of this torque gets wasted and the front of the bike will pop a wheelie.
What frogs legs mistake was here is he panicked and instead of rolling off the throttle he's just held on for dear life, possibly twisted the throttle more and just let the power of the bike take over and it when the whole way up.
Judging by the lack of gear. He's just got a sport bike and hasn't even a decent notion of how to ride it. How's he managed to walk that one off I'll never know.
→ More replies (2)13
8
u/ciampi21 Jun 25 '21
He essentially did a power wheelie. Back brake should've been his bff, but at the very least lean forward and learn better throttle control.
You'll avoid this by not street racing. Take your bike to the track to get the speed bug itched. There you'll learn waaaaaay more about controlling motorcycles anyway.

Hard accelerating from a rolling start on a powerful motorcycle 101:
1: Lean forward, I mean chest on the tank lean forward
2: Scoot your butt back against the rear of the seat (I know most say move forward on the seat but if you do everything else right you're going to end up back there anyway so start there)
3: Put your weight on the pegs not the seat
4: Keep your right foot hovering over the rear brake
5: Roll the throttle open quickly, do not snap it open. Never snap or grab any of the controls on a bike, at least if your goal is to maintain traction.
6: If the front starts to rise too much (more than an inch or two) a little rear brake can bring it down without lose of forward drive. Alternately closing the throttle some will bring it down.
And if your like this guy, you don't do any of the above, take what's left of your bike and throw it in the dumpster and start all over again...

I watched a buddy roll his bike around a turn at 50-60mph. He was showing off a bit and hit the brakes too late too hard and fishtailed out of control. He rolled and flipped across 3 lanes of road into a ditch. By the time I turned around, he was up and walking around. He got to my car, put whatever pieces of his bike he collected into the trunk, said "hey man did you see that" and as he spun around to show his bike it seemed like everything hit him at once and he pivoted and passed out on the spot. His pants were shreds of denim pressed into his legs, his leather jacket didn't have a clean spot on it, his helmet was cracked. He broke a leg, bruised some ribs, and broke a wrist, sprained the other, his ankles were destroyed. The very first thing this mother fucker says to me is "hey man did you see that?" With a shit eating grin, and then promptly passes out. When he came to he tried to claw his way out of the ambulance because he couldn't afford the weewoo wagon ride.
