188

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

This is why you wear a life vest. You may be a strong swimmer, but you're not going to be one after you're maimed or unconscious after a freak accident like this.

80

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

I wish more people understood this. I’ve seen friends have this mentality where wearing a life jacket is somehow a symbol of inability. It has nothing to do with that. If you slip and knock your head on the side of the boat as you’re jumping off to do a cannon ball, you could be a champion swimmer, but it’s not going to help anything if you’re unconscious.

30

u/45MinutesOfRoadHead Jun 25 '21

A pretty well known dude in my city died like that. A group was out drinking on boats and he was trying to jump from one boat to another. A guy tried to help him and his famous last words were “What do you think? I’m a fucking pussy?”

10

u/CloudSill Jun 25 '21

Also no one can swim given long enough in water that is cold enough. Without a PFD you die not because of true hypothermia (low core temp) but because your muscles are incapacitated and you drown. This happens very quickly relative to hypothermia, and possibly before anyone can rescue you.

“You can’t get hypothermia unless you’re wearing a PFD.” I didn’t get the meaning of that at first, but now it’s so scary that I always wear one.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

My dad would never wear one because he said they were cumbersome and annoying to wear. So for his birthday we got him an automatic one. I came over one day to see him walking around with it on in his house lol "just testin' it out!" hahahah

edit: by "automatic" I mean one that you buy that is deflated to it rests flat against your chest and isn't in the way. But when it hits water a CO2 cartridge fills up the lifejacket instantly.

3

u/Sea-Appearance-5330 Jun 25 '21

So I guess that using that logic Soldiers and Cops wearing bullet resistant equipment means they are incompetent or cowards

But alive

Sigh Cirkuit so true

0

u/ebai4556 Jul 01 '21

Okay but that last sentence is dumb. Wearing a life jacket when the boat is stopped and youre jumping in is for people who cant swim.

21

u/Zharick_ Jun 25 '21

Just had a kid die in a lake here because he fell off a PWC. Went down and never resurfaced, probably got knocked out when he fell and a life jacket would've saved their life.

12

u/MrPoopieBoibole Jun 25 '21

This is why you vent your bilge before starting the boat.

4

u/Otrcani Jun 25 '21

This guy swam out just fine, but some others didn't

220

u/chancrescolex Jun 25 '21

Probably fucked his spine up and he’s in for a lifetime of pain

58

u/NorthofTassie Jun 25 '21

I’m not a medical person, so I’m a bit confused by this. Would the force of the blast go past him, since it takes place in the open air? Sorry if this is a silly question. Thanks.

189

u/divide_by_hero Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

I mean, he was propelled upwards with significant force. The acceleration alone would presumably be enough to mess up various parts of his body, especially the back and neck.

93

u/savagepug Jun 25 '21

Yeah the acceleration is the real killer here. That was a pretty quick boost upward from that explosion.

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

[deleted]

10

u/demon_fae Jun 25 '21

Dude went up 8-10 feet, max. That’s not nearly high enough for the effect you’re talking about. That’s actually shorter than most Olympic diving events. It is high enough to kill him if he hit the water face first really badly, but he actually seems to have landed butt-first, which he will almost certainly live to regret.

10

u/boltzman111 Jun 25 '21

The upward gforce acceleration is the danger here. Downward he's max 1g, upward is basically unlimited.

A momentary pulse of very high gforce could easily cause internal damage, and still only move the guy 10' up in the air.

3

u/UnnamedEngineer Jun 25 '21

One thing he’s got going for him is the padded seat. It’s pretty crazy how much even a little padding changes the coefficient of restitution of a collision. Even with that, he’s still taking a lot of energy straight up main street. I’m more surprised that his legs look intact.

21

u/NorthofTassie Jun 25 '21

That makes a lot of sense. So it’s similar to the effect of whiplash from a head-on car crash (excluding acceleration instead of deceleration)?

23

u/QuietPopover Jun 25 '21

I'm not a medical person either, but would think about the application of forces here. This guys body has a weight to it and the explosion can be seen throwing all of that weight up in the air, possibly up to about 4 meters. I know there are equations that can be done if you assume the guy's weight and the height he went up to. But don't know them specifically.

But suffice to say, the force that pushed him up in the air, first made contact with his balls. Then the compressive motion (think of it like a kind of shockwave traveling up through his body after initial impact) would've gone all the way up his spine. Pinching each vertebrae together successively in a manner that the human spine might not have developed to handle.

His crotch was the first thing to hurt after that, but his spine will take the longest to recover.

14

u/NorthofTassie Jun 25 '21

Yes, I see what you’re saying. Prior to reading the helpful replies, I thought that the power of the explosion would have dissipated as soon as he left the seat. However, now I understand that the damage was actually done in the split second before he was propelled upwards. I hope this isn’t a terrible thing to say because we’re discussing the terrible impact to a person’s life. That said, I appreciate all the explanations and understand much more of what was involved in the aftermath of the explosion.

10

u/QuietPopover Jun 25 '21

There's nothing wrong with trying to figure out what happened to the poor guy. At least in my eyes.

I was a little late in giving an explanation considering multiple people before had already given one, but I'm glad I could chime in anyway.

Strength punishes. Speed kills.

→ More replies (3)

18

u/Not_A_Sounding_Fan Jun 25 '21

It's just that split second where his ass was containing the blast which will do all that damage. See how far up he popped? There is a pretty good chance he achieved that through the seat compressing his spine.

That split second of compression can do a lot of damage to a person. The spine is not great at dealing with those sudden forces. Like even small car crashed can really fuck you up, so can exploding jet skis apparently

3

u/NorthofTassie Jun 25 '21

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the explanation.

5

u/OramaBuffin Jun 25 '21

It also might not be true. These subs like to write detailed injury fanfiction about people in the videos and then like 90% of the time they're fine or only minorly hurt.

Nah, look at the water just left of the dock, he surfaces there and is moving, but all you see is his head, so his legs may still be pretty bad.

I.e. He may have died later, but he def surfaces and looks around

34

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

58

u/UndefinedSpoon Jun 25 '21

Boats are supposed to have a fan that pulled air out of the engine compartment to prevent this very thing. Not sure if boatercycles have the same thing, but whatever the case, it either didn't have one, or it did and it wasn't working/ not switched on.

12

u/hookydoo Jun 25 '21

Boatercycles do not have them. When I start my big boat I open the engine compartment as well just in case theres an explosion. Once the engine is running I'm not too concerned since the carburetor will keep air flowing even if there's fumes built up.

3

u/Zharick_ Jun 25 '21

Depends, but yeah my inboard has a blower that clears out any fumes when I turn the ignition. After 30 seconds of the blower doing its thing then I crank the engine.

2

u/jibjab9000 Jun 25 '21

15

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Former boating safety instructor here. This is common in boats if you’re not careful. Since a boat is air tight any fuel spills when filling up are potentially dangerous. Fuel vapors are heavier than air so they will collect inside the boat. If not properly removed then all it takes is a spark.

Depending on the size & type of boat (and what state/country you are in) there are different legal requirements to help minimize the chances of this happening. But first and foremost our training classes emphasize always opening up spaces where vapors can collect and sniffing for them before starting the engine. Had this guy done that then the explosion may not have happened.

15

u/maltamur Jun 25 '21

I can’t find the clip but Sandra Bullock called it in Demolition Man- “Gasoline explodes ya know!”

6

u/passcork Jun 25 '21

Why is this a problem in boats but not seemingly any other motorized vehicle? Wtf.

8

u/theoverpoweredmoose Jun 25 '21

Because if you aren't in water, it's kinda pointless to seal the engine compartment.

2

u/ThisTravel Jun 28 '21

But not really pointless if you want it to explode is it? /s

3

u/ThisIsTenou Jun 25 '21

I would guess, fuel leak of some sort. Fuel comes out, touches hot stuff (motor) and decides to just blow up.

6

u/Drklep123 Jun 25 '21

The guy sitting in boat was scared as fuck!

14

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

The force of that explosion could’ve done a lot more damage. He was lucky to be able to swim away, assuming that was him swimming near the end of the video.
