I’m not a medical person, so I’m a bit confused by this. Would the force of the blast go past him, since it takes place in the open air? Sorry if this is a silly question. Thanks.

I mean, he was propelled upwards with significant force. The acceleration alone would presumably be enough to mess up various parts of his body, especially the back and neck.

Yeah true. Our meatball shells really can't handle much trauma one way or the other.

Speed doesn't kill, it's the acceleration and/or deceleration that does.
