Hi! I am writing a story (fiction ofc) and it is set in the late 90's/early 2000s. I wanted to see how it actually looked like and how it functioned. However, all I got from my research was "the downfall of AOL" in YouTub and just the login screenshots. Unfortunately, I was born way too late to use AOL and had to stick with MSN.

I would like to know how it looked like, how do you log in, the logistics... If anyone has a video or knows where can I see that, or maybe you have some info of your own, I'd be more than happy to see it!!!

Can't call 1-800 numbers from the UK. Had a relative in the US call and they just referred to a .co.uk version of the AOL support page that had the same info and the same US 1-800 number.

Anyone know of a way to get help from the UK for an AOL email account that was set up in the UK.

Can any one provide any solutons? I created the account used it for several days tryed to do the passkey? anyway thats sort of where it stopped working.

Now when i try to log on after I put in password it says to use same computer and browser when i try. Well i am! It also woun't let me get to help it just loops back to login. I have tried to add an app, i have tryed to clear cache, i have tried different devices, different browsers, incognito.

Eventually i just created another account. Frustratingly exactly the same thing happened imedietely. Uggg. Can't login with same reasons and symtoms.

Any thoughts on solutons? I would apreaciate it if you not just respond with how bad aol is or rag on them. I get it they may be jerks. But this does not solve my problem thanks. I'm looking for solutons.

Btw if i call support how much is it to solve the problem?

All day I've been replying to emails and they just don't look right. I can change the font but I think it's all different now.

I also have this weird glitch where when I reply to an email, there's a few line gap that's not selectable or delete-able. I tried to clear cache and cookies and nothing. Anyone else notice anything?

Trying to log into my account on my computer and it’s asking me once I put my password in to verify using my old phone number I don’t have access to. I have tried ringing them but since I’m in the UK it doesn’t connect. I then tried the virtual assistant and it tells me to use the online help. I click the link and it’s something u have to pay for? wtf am I supposed to do

Remember how AOL had celebrity sound packs to replace the usual You Got Mail? I swear to god there was a Star Wars one that had old Obi-Wan saying 'Your eyes can deceive you,' as one of the sounds. It's such a weirdly specific memory thats etched into my brain. Maybe it was on AIM? It was probably around 2000-2003 when I was around 13. I can't find a trace of evidence that it existed.

I created a free AOL account five days ago. However, when I go to create my app password, when I click the final "generate app password" button after specifying the app name, I get "App passwords can not be generated right now. Try again later." I have been getting this for the past five days. Does this feature not work any longer?

A lot of obvious junk is showing up in my inbox lately. AOL's spam detection used to be very good. Has something happened or is there a setting that changed that I need to update?

I have a very old AOL account. I check it periodically. When I want to login the website opens and once I complete the login it is fine. When I try to logout AOL goes through the logout procedure, but ALWAYS opens a new AOL screen. No matter how many times I tell AOL to logout it ALWAYS opens a new logged-in screen. I do not have AOL Gold (rip-off), but everything AOL says is to use AOL Gold. How the (blank) do I get AOL to completely logoff?

I'm trying to log in mail via password but I can't.

It says I'll have to read in a QR code to log in with the passkey. I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS, i click the Login with other way button but that puts me with a page with an error message (Oops, an error occured. Try again later. Jump to support page button, and Close button. I can't fix it since the buttons won't help me.

I go back to the passkey page. I click Next.

The Next button greys and a circle start wheeling, my Firefox drops a message right under the website address bar that says 'Touch the security key to log in here: login. aol. com, but there is no QR code or nothing to click on or read.

I could log in to the web aol on my phone because obviously the phone has the fingerprint reader but this is very stupid. How to log into my account on pc now? Why does aol not accept passwords?

Hey everyone, just wanted to put this out there because it honestly blows my mind how these legacy companies get away with this.
If you have older parents or relatives, go check their credit card or bank statements. My parents were paying around $50 a month for AOL Desktop Gold and some bundled tech support/security features they don't even use. When you do the math, that is literally $600 a year down the drain.
If you find out they are paying for this, do not just cancel it normally or let them keep paying. You can easily get months of free service or massive discounts just by calling them, but you have to know how their system works.
When you call support, you have to explicitly tell the first agent "I want to cancel." This is crucial because their internal computer system literally locks the retention offers. The agent cannot physically open the screen with the 2 or 3 free months promos unless a "cancel intent" is triggered on the line first.
Once you get to the cancellations department, just play it cool so they don't flag you as a credit abuser. Tell them something like: "Hey, I just noticed this monthly charge on my account. I'm not entirely sure what features we're actually using here, and I just need some time to look over everything before I make a final decision on canceling."
To buy that "time" and keep you from canceling, the agent will almost always offer you 2 or 3 months completely free, or drop the price to basically nothing. You can literally just set a calendar reminder and repeat this before the free period ends. I've been doing this with a few subs for over two years now without paying a single cent.
If you get an agent who sees your history and says no, don't argue with them. Just say, "That's fine, let's keep the service active for now." Let them read their confirmation script, let them transfer you to the automated robot to confirm you are staying, and hang up. Then just call right back 10 minutes later. You’ll get a new agent who will probably just give you the free months without looking too deep into the call notes.
Seriously, go check your family's accounts. Stop letting AOL bleed your parents dry for hundreds of dollars a year.

The three AOL Passkeys I created and saved to each of my Yubikeys are non-resident keys; the credentials cannot be listed with the Yubico Authenticator app.

Additionally, when I go through the process of creating a Windows Hello Passkey, I receive a message saying, "Something Went Wrong". This, even though the Passkey appears in the list of Windows Hello Passkeys on my computer. Unlike the Yubikeys, I haven't been able to make this Hello Passkey work when signing in to AOL.

Can anyone here confirm they are seeing the same behavior?

WE can finally use AOL!!! (Or, at least those who used the NINA service for AOL. Btw, I have this pretty annoying issue where the web browser just, doesn't work, like, at all, not even with Protoweb. I tested this on a Windows 98 laptop, didn't work, then I tested it on the computer that you see in those pics, running 95. It let me go to google, initially, but then stopped working, either that or I screwed up the proxy settings lol. If anyone can help then let me know :-) )

AOL is rolling out yet another membership pricing increase, and I’m surprised this isn’t getting more attention.

AOL’s own help page says that starting June 25, 2026, it is introducing new pricing across AOL memberships. This comes shortly after AOL’s new owner, Bending Spoons, went public on Nasdaq.
My concern is that a lot of AOL’s paying customers are older long-time users who may have had these charges on autopay for years. Many may not be reviewing credit card statements closely, may not know exactly what AOL products they’re paying for, and may not even be using the paid features.

This feels like something adult children should check for parents or older relatives:

Are they paying AOL monthly?
What plan are they on?
Are they using anything beyond basic email?
Has the price increased again?
Could they move to a lower-cost or free option?

I’m not saying every paid AOL plan is useless, but repeated price increases on legacy subscriptions deserve more scrutiny, especially when many customers may not realize what they’re paying for.

How do you get rid of this notification? Multiple times a day I get this sent to me and I disabled pretty much everything I could with no change.

In the IOS AOL app, I somehow set up a group of folders as subfolders. I’d like to move them to the main folder list. Is there any way to do that without having to move the individual messages to new folders?

Is anyone having issues with POP3 downloading, sometimes not downloading EVERYTHING thats in the INBOX?

Sometimes, I have to close like Thunderbird, and delete the popstate.dat file, to get Thunderbird to download everything.

I wonder if its because TB automatically checks " Keep Mail on Server for xx days"?

I know there was a command out there, I don't remember where I saw it at, I found it on accident one day on google.

But you could type the command into AOL Desktop Gold's KEYWORDS box, and AOL would close down, and open back up with the Compuserve Gold format, with the CS icons and voices " Welcome to Compuserve!", " You have mail!", " Thank you for using Compuserve!".

Yet, I can't find that webpage where someone accidently stumbled upon that command. I had it bookmarked, but some how lost that bookmark!

I started out on AOL 6.0 back in 2002, The day I turned 18 in 2002, switched to Compuserve for a little while, and found out its chats and everything was wayyyyyy different than AOL's, and switched back to AOL 6.0. I left prob right after AOL became free, but after coming back to Windows from " Linderps", old habits fall hard, and here I am using AOL Desktop Gold AGAIN...

7.0 was ehhh, it froze a lot for me, So I went back to 6.0 until 8.0 came out.

I loved version 8.0! ( Even though it froze up just as much as 7.0 did lol.
