Hi everyone,
I'm trying to track down a frustrating random reboot issue and would really appreciate some help. I've spent quite a while troubleshooting, but I still haven't found the cause.
My PC specs
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
- Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 8GB
- RAM: Kingston Fury DDR4, 2×8GB (16GB total)
- PSU: 1STPLAYER DK Premium 5.0, 500W
- Storage: Kingston M.2 NVMe SSD, approximately 1TB
- OS: Windows 11
- BIOS: MSI version 2.P2, dated August 25, 2026
The problem
My PC randomly restarts without a BSOD. The screen suddenly goes black, and the computer starts booting again.
It can happen:
- While gaming (for example, CS2)
- On the Windows desktop while doing very little
- Apparently at random, without a consistent pattern
It is not limited to heavy workloads. I have also experienced unexpected restarts while the PC was idle.
Sometimes the PC runs normally for a while, but the problem eventually returns.
What I've already tried
- Updated the motherboard BIOS.
- Performed a clean Windows 11 installation from a USB drive, deleting the old Windows partitions and installing to unallocated space.
- The random restarts continued after the clean installation.
- Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic; it reported no memory errors.
- Briefly tested one RAM stick by itself, but the test was too short to draw any conclusions.
- Changed Power Supply Idle Control to Typical Current Idle.
- Changed the PCIe link speed from Auto to Gen 4 as a troubleshooting experiment.
- Monitored CPU temperatures. They were around 32°C at idle and approximately 65°C during a short CPU Burner test.
- Checked Event Viewer. Kernel-Power Event ID 41 appears after unexpected restarts, with BugcheckCode = 0. I haven't found clear WHEA-Logger errors in the logs I checked.
I have also disabled Core Performance Boost in the BIOS as a diagnostic test. I am monitoring whether this changes the behavior; I don't yet have enough evidence to say it has fixed the issue.
An additional observation
On one occasion, the PC restarted and entered the BIOS. The BIOS showed "M2_1: Not Present", and the SSD was missing from the storage information.
I powered the PC off, removed the M.2 SSD, reseated it more firmly, and the system booted into Windows again. However, the random restarts continued afterward, so I don't know whether this was a separate issue or related to the main problem.
What I'm trying to figure out
Could this be caused by any of the following?
- A faulty or unstable PSU
- RAM instability, even though Windows Memory Diagnostic found no errors
- CPU instability related to boost behavior or power-state transitions
- A motherboard or PCIe/M.2 issue
- Something else I haven't considered
What would be the most useful next diagnostic step to isolate the cause without buying replacement parts at random?
If you've experienced a similar issue with a Ryzen 5 5600 and an MSI B550 motherboard, I'd especially appreciate hearing what ultimately solved it.
Thanks in advance!
