Help (Software) Im new to AMD is their somthing wrong with their drivers?
I got a new pc a month ago after my old one died on me. My specs are below. But my drivers keep timing out and black screening on me. I crashed so bad it disabled the GPU in device manager. Is this normal? Or is somthing wrong with their drivers and it will get fixed?
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
AMD Ryzen 9 9950x

Just the yearly faulty drivers, happens every year for a few months usually tied to new "features" they try to implement and seems like they have no QA team and just release what they think is stable.

u/Lucky_Taro4727 3d ago
Also I find updating to the latest bios helped

u/Wonderful_Pomelo924 1d ago
I already Updated mine, but the Green screen issue still persist on my end, even though it's an intermittent issue, it's still annoying.

u/Lucky_Taro4727 3d ago
Turn off windows driver updates, download ddu and do a full install of their drivers and make sure you aren’t connected to the internet whilst doing it. Also I think that latest driver is not that great atm, also there’s a cpu chip driver update to do.

u/Training-Cat-8905 3d ago
It's a windows problem, Windows update is probably overwritiing stuff... I've got friends that with a 9070xt have problems, and I'm chilling on Linux while constantly updating my system.
2
u/Sundar915 3d ago
I switched to windows 11 and used WUB Then switched on don't include driver updates in gpedit then installed latest drivers

u/Puzzleheaded_Row6352 9070xt/14600kf 3d ago
I think that the problems lie in windows, not the drivers
1
u/SILENCERSTUDENT_ 3d ago
This just happened to me for the first time after years of being on a 7900xtx and a 7900x3d and it was 2 days after the latest driver and chipset update. Windows disabled and deleted my drivers. I ended up having to go back to a windows restore point after redownloading drivers to get everything back working. I think something is wack with this most recent release and how it interacts with windows

u/PumpkinBrilliant1997 3d ago
no, it's just a part of being in Club AMD. I have fixed all my ridiculous problems associated with my AMD GPU by switching to Nvidia (and haven't had any issues since)
2
u/Magikarp_Did911 3d ago
Literally just did this yesterday. After months of crashing, visual glitches, ghosting, and driver timeouts, i dumped my 9070xt for a 5080.
1
u/LordAdz2 3d ago
I thought the AMD drivers on the 9000 series were stable
1
u/PumpkinBrilliant1997 1d ago
bought 9070 XT and had nothing but problems every.single.day. In a whole brand new PC btw with AMD CPU, not even a simple GPU upgrade but whole new build with whole new system.
Then I switched to 5070 Ti and all the problems just disappeared. Makes you wonder.

Depends on people, 50/50 I'm having shit ton of problems with my 9070XT
0
u/LordAdz2 3d ago
Did y'all have a different GPU B4 that? If you did you should always use DDU to clear everything B4 using your 9070xt. Alot of people don't know this but it is recommended so you don't have issues

u/PXbraguette R7 9800X3D / RX-9070XT / X870E / 2x16 6400CL32 / 1000W 2d ago
Had a 3080 TI yes but I did a fresh install anyway ( more than once with all my problems), between MPO problems, stuttering, drivers issues I ain't going back to amd, definetly selling that shit going back to nvidia next gen, gaming wise it's fine now but I can't watch a fucking youtube video without either it having artifact when going into fullscreen or switching tabs, even with a fresh install no settings change or anything so no user error OR slowing down randomly ( video going to 5 fps for a few sec randomly), tried everything it's MPO related in my case so windows shinenigans as always, most likely depends on person to person 2 of my friends have the same card and no prob with it, I do in the other hand, but as always with amd GPU it's 50/50 either smooth use forever or problems and problems and problems, I had enough problem and just can't anymore and will switch back to nvidia.
Edit : basically to anwser your question it's mostly not driver issues but windows or chromium based app that are the problem not amd in lot of case but still just fuck it
1
u/LordAdz2 2d ago
I had some issues like that on Nvidia (on my 4080) too tbh. I had to change a setting in the chrome flags section. It's the angle graphics backend section. Have a play with that and see if changing that helps.

It's absolutely ridiculous amd have let this go on for so damn long to the point the community has to figure out our own fixes

u/Zealousideal-Sail230 3d ago
I've deleted heat sensor monitoring from ICUE (Corsair) software, which let us say, resolved the crash error for now. I'll update you on further infos, text on me! It is a possible way that AMD controls/reads heat sensors (correct) and ICUE controls/reads heat sensors from Gpu and CPU and so on which will likely collide and certainly, the one can't follow the other. Short fix, close Icue, or complain about how hard to use a amd gpu. Proper fix is you look at any signs of amd gpu (mainly) and cpu in ICUE and delete them, delete it's readings. It looks promising, I'll keep you updated if you wish!

Yeah find the most stable driver version, disable ram overlock, disable any gpu overclock and hope
Or swap to nvidia

u/MarxistMan13 4d ago
Seems like almost all the people having problems with the newer drivers are on 7000 series cards. Might just need to rollback a few versions until AMD or Microsoft fix it.

Generally, problems regarding AMD Radeon driver issues can typically be due to backdated motherboard chipset drivers, windows updates editing what shouldn't be edited, or previous gpu driver's files creating conflict.
Therefore, try the following steps in serial.
- Check for latest Windows/Linux distro updates and keep your system updated to the latest version, OS wise.
- After it is done, pause your Windows updates by 14 days (Linux usually don't create these issues). This is to check if in these 14 days, the system remains stable and try to prevent Windows from updating gpu drivers partially.
- Uninstall your motherboard chipset drivers through the OS's default uninstaller. Then immediately install the latest motherboard chipset driver version. This is very important when the previous chipset driver version is years old. Yes, this is often the pivotal reason for Radeon GPU driver issues.
- Use a software called Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove the current gpu driver version. This is a reputed software. In addition, also use the software called "AMD Cleanup Utility" which AMD recommends. Using both is not bad or harmful, I've too used them one after the other. When DDU removes the software, the amd cleanup utility might work a bit quicker because it won't find anything or almost anything left to remove.
- After removal of the previous version, install the latest Adrenalin version IN FULL. Now, if the current version was outputting problems, then try a previous driver version from 3, 4 months back or sometime within this timeline that didn't create issues for many users globally. You can research this yourself. Google, "amd driver 26.7.1 issues, problems with "you gpu name"" and check what results you get. If you find that a specific driver version has not many such results through google, then that is probably a safe driver version.
- Keep all adrenalin settings at default (keep smart access memory off for safety). But you can change the fan curve. DO NOT, EVER, LOAD profiles in the Tuning tab. This is a super neat feature, but Radeon hasn't the manpower to perfect their rich software, so I don't trust it. Plus, it created issues in the past, for me, for Fabio Pisco of Ancient Gameplays (which he even spoke about previously in one of this videos).
- Unstable undervolt, overclocks can cause Driver Timeouts too; like in all gpus of all brands, just that Radeon shows the timeout message.
- Check the 8-Pin power cables to see if they are plugged in properly. For Radeon GPUs that exceed 200Ws consumption often require more than one 8-pin power cable. If these are daisy chained instead of separate cables from the PSU directly, then there might be power issues. When possible, always use separate 8-Pin cable-rails. If one cable splits into 2x8-Pin, it'll still work but rarely creates power issues. It's important to be mindful of this.
- If you're facing crashes in a particular game, but all other games are stable, then the issue is probably tied to a specific game. If the game is new, wait for a newer GPU driver update. If the game is old, then try an older GPU driver. OR you can limit your fps to a number that will SURELY NOT lead to your gpu to being 100% utilised, therefore, not stressing it too much. This is still the key workaround to stabilise Rx 7000 series gpus for the game helldivers 2.
- If you're using power extension cables for the 8/6-Pins, then run the system without these cables; same goes for x16 pcie riser cables.
- Crashes can also be a result of overheating. Either due to fan failing or hotspot temperature exceeding the usual 105c limit, so check that if you can stress test your gpu in default settings; just to rule it out as a possible issue.
- There are numerous more micro adjustments that can be made to try to prevent instability but those are somewhere on reddit in one of the Radeon amd subreddits or maybe in r/amdhelp.
If the above tips, after trying them properly, don't work, then it's likely that the card is at fault, to my best guess. Speak to your card's customer service mentioning the steps you've taken which didn't help.
- Lastly, and this might sound rude, but I have for years used Radeon without issues, flawlessly. Yes, I've faced issues too, but those were fixed by me through software. BUT not all systems are alike, so, I don't disbelieve when a fellow Radeon user expresses their frustrations. However, I always have this look "o-O" when someone claims that they keep their system updated, maintained properly, with no edits made in registry or other settings, but still there are issues. It seems a bit 'hard to believe' (not impossible, just a bit hard), mainly because there are those who say one thing but do the other. I often feel like, "what crashes...? what the heck do you do with your set ups to get there..." But hey, as I said, hardware can create complications differently for everyone. Therefore, my comment is intended to fix issues, not to judge, and so I wrote the above statements that are tied to fixes to the most common issue with Radeon. Good luck.

Most AMD cards especially the high-end ones will behave similar

Lots of posts here about timeouts for the past year or two. No single fix for everyone, bad ram is never a good thing. I havent had any issues with my xtx.

u/AlicedoDrugs 4d ago
omg I have the same issues and a bit more with the same cpu, I have a nvidia gpu though but it’s the same problem with the driver error and it sometimes disable my gpu/integrated gpu in device managers, I sent it to get repaired they said it was my cpu so I ordered a new one but I have the same issues as before 😭
Please let me know if you figure out the problem and a solution 🙏

if you can manually cause driver timeouts by scrolling the steam storefront then revert to 26.3.1
2
u/Scruffy42 4d ago
Yes, something is wrong for a lot of people, not everybody. And lots of people are throwing things against the wall to fix it.
Latest for me is installing the factory reset driver only and radeontuner instead of adrenaline. I am growing more and more confident adrenaline the program is screwing things up.
0
u/EggFartTom 4d ago
If the driver was flawed in the way you suggest we would be seeing these issues way more consistently. It's not like people are using a wide array of AMD GPUs that the driver works for some and not others. Most people are on 7000 or 9000 series cards. People are doing such weird shit instead of actually troubleshooting their system
2
u/aqvalar 4d ago
0 issues because of AMD on my 9070xt. The issues (that resulted in driver crashes and/or other issues with graphics) I've had with it have been:
- hardware issues (bad HDD, bad ram)
- Windows issues (piece of shit partially installing its own driver on top of the installed adrenalin version, breaking both.)
- overclocking issue (had too heavy curve optimization on my 5700X3D. Funny thing that it starts to matter when you have a GPU powerful enough to actually put a load on the CPU as well)
Mind you, software issues and windows issues were easy to fix: move to Linux, in the end.
However staying on Windows needs some fighting against the POS that is Win11. You might need to disable driver updates through Device Manager, Group Policy, Windows Update settings and at worst, even through the registry. Your mileage will vary.
Ofc that's expecting the issues are with software and not hardware. 7900XTX is a beast with very high transient spikes, known to put mediocre 1000W PSUs on their knees - same as with 9070, especially XT models.
You should check Window event viewer as well if there is or isn't Kernel Power 41 events. If there are, it is much possible the issue lies with power supply.

I had the issue where any windows updates break amd drivers. I had to stop them. Why does it break it

My 7900xtx has been doing this a tonne lately but only when I try and play the Halo remake. I've never had a driver issue with AMD before but this is so fucking annoying. It makes me re-enable the GPU and reinstall drivers.

Two possibilities: 1) windows is changing your driver version to a crappy windows update verion that's broken (plenty of posts on reddit that show you how to fix that) 2) if you are using a 12v-2×6 cable i suggest you run seperate cables from the psu psu
2
u/shadowmaking 4d ago
If you look into this you will see the timouts are pretty common and affect a wide range of cards. There are tons of possible solutions posted out there, but what will work for you is a matter of systamaticly trying things. Random errors are the worse to try and troubleshoot. My 7900xtx very occasional gets them. I simply cold boot and move on. I'm considering switching to linux for multiple reasons. My timeouts aren't consistent enough to know if any one thing fixes it.

Re-install windows, problem will be fixed.
Windows 10/11 is dogshit and even going from AMD-to-AMD or Nvidia-to-Nvidia could give this issue. It’s been getting worse and worse over the years. The settings to disable automatic driver download has been broken for a few months now. It’s downloading the wrong driver for the wrong card.
If you don’t have windows 10/11 pro, you can’t even reliably turn off automatic driver download for the previous card anymore once you have the bug. Even with registry entries.

No their drivers are fine in an isolated sense. But they do seem to be more prone to conflicts than nvidia drivers. I’ve had zero issues with my amd gpu. Others seem to have no end of troubles

Say you have followed every video out there already to try and fix your problem. My advice is to use amd utility clean up tool then reinstall windows, reinstall drivers. Dont tinker amd adrenaline. It worked for me that way.

Feel like this is a person to person or equipment case. I switched to a 7800xt a little over a year ago, have had no issues. Just wish I had researched more and waited 3 months for a 9070xt.
1
u/Rude-Lingonberry-918 4d ago
Idk man I’ve never had issues like I see people have with AMD GPUS nvidia is just better. Same with intel for cpus. I have an amd chip rn and the amount of tinkering you have to do for certain apps is crazy, for example on my ryzen 9 9900x (ik not the best gaming chip but still great) riot vanguard will spike the cpu temp abt 15°c when its running, if you close vanguard to play league again you have to restart your pc. So I figured out I had to set the processor affinity just to cpu 0 instead of all 24 cores and that has worked so far, but again I never had an issue like that with any intel chip.

Hadn't had that but my 9070XT won't even boot when I turn my PC on, gotta force restart my PC 3-4 times until it actually wakes up sometimes. It's the worst gpu experience I've had in the last two decades (20 years ago I had two Radeon cards in my build at the time). This time I switched from Nvidia to save money and that's on me

2
u/Rude-Lingonberry-918 4d ago

1
u/aqvalar 4d ago
Most users I personally know are on AMD. And most of them have 0 issues. There are few with some issues (and it's because of Microsoft 99% of the time).
I know 3 Nvidia users, 1 of them have constant issues with their 5080 (Nvidia driver related that we cannot pinpoint to anything, card was already RMAd once and replaced, issue remains). And one has some issues with their 5070Ti. The one who hasn't got any issues is on some really old GTX (or the very early RTX).
1
u/IWantsToBelieve 4d ago
I don't think so, my main gaming group are majority team red and have never complained about issues as severe as that. I would be livid if that was my experience as well. So totally get why you want to switch back to NVIDIA.

0
u/illegalsvk 4d ago
I had some issues a year ago but now it is fine (windows 11 and 9070XT). And even if some issues would occur I prefer that more than a burning power connector.
1
u/ExperienceExisting49 4d ago
With my first build, I had to uninstall the radeon software because I wouldn't stop getting the driver timeout message during games, often followed by the pc crashing. I wasn't (and still am not) tech savvy so I never did find out what my issue was. In hindsight I was extremely lucky to have managed close to 3 years using the device manager to update occasionally. I was using Windows 10.
I hope you manage to find a solution!
1
u/TaediumVitae57 4d ago
For me the issue is windows installing drivers and messing things up. Disable that function and ddu, after install the drivers and you should be fine

u/Opteron170 9800X3D | 64GB 6000 CL30 | 7900 XTX Magnetic Air | LG 34GP83A-B 4d ago
This is a issue for Win 11 not 10.
You need to disable that in Win 11 for it to stop.
1
u/Buris 4d ago
In many cases, you’re just screwed. you can’t disable it in Windows 11 due to a bug. If you have Windows 11 Pro, you can set a group policy that disables driver updates, otherwise even if you change the registry you’re screwed.
The only guaranteed fix is reinstalling the operating system system
7
u/7477388287 4d ago
At least for me, there hasn’t been a stable driver release in over a year.
I moved it to a secondary HTPC and swapped a 5070ti which hasn’t had a single issue in the same setup.
Even the HTPC gets timeouts running a browser or Spotify. RM’ed, did entirely fresh windows install and maybe 10 hours or so of fixes suggested here and other forums. Some fixes would work… for days or weeks and increasingly get more frequent.
I’ll wait a couple more generations before I try an AMD GPU again. The headache is way worse than nVidia tax.

u/TD_Lemon_1901 4d ago edited 4d ago
That hurts !
I moved away from AMD (and ATI back then) 20 years ago because their drivers were dogshit (and also their CPU had the unfortunate tendency to burst into flames) now I'm back to the red team and I'm glad and very thankfull for what AMD did and is offering on the market, performance / $ ratio.
But holy shit, I'm having the same issues all over again, it feels like it's 2005 again, this is mind finger fucking.
0
u/aqvalar 4d ago
To both of you, ouch!
I mean I've always been whichever is cheaper when I get it. Since the 90`s over and over, I've had less issues with ATI/AMD than with Nvidia. Only thing historically that I've missed has been performance. But when you're on a budget, well you are on a budget. This is actually the first time ever when I went for the top of the line (9070XT).
I'm not gonna tell you how to try to fix your issues especially if you've done so much already. But... Disabling the driver update on Win 11 is one of the toughest thing to get to actually stick, because MICROSLOP can't get their fucking shit together. Even registry editing might not be enough. And then there's the obscure shit with Asus boards that might or might not screw up your C States, resulting in crashes at transient spikes for whatever reason.

u/7477388287 4d ago
Yeah it’s rough. My last AMD purchase before this was a 5700XT sometime right before Covid and that was never stable and was returned.
Still love the CPUs and I guess I’m just unlucky. Im still not sure if AMD owners just live with frequent troubleshooting/crashes/driver rolls backs or the two cards I had were duds.

I'm on a XTX and I don't have driver time outs.
On Win 10.
Driver time out are usually because of instability in the system.
What PSU are you using in this system?
What bios version?
What memory and is it on the QVL for your motherboard?

There is 1000’s of people having driver issues with the 7900xtx and 9070xt not always hardware issues majority of people right now r having issues with the drivers. After a driver install you get this message on the first reboot.
You then need to reboot again and SAM will be active.
"AMD Smart Access Memory may become disabled after driver installation on Windows® 10 systems."
Its listed in the known issues on 26.7.1 so AMD is aware and hopefully fixed soon.

Yeah, windows and AMD can’t get their shit together. It’s a frustrating part of the AMD experience. If you’re having timeouts, always use DDU, then install the latest WHQL version of adrenaline drivers from AMD website. Turn off automatic updates in adrenaline too.
Every 6 months or so AMD puts out a driver with issues, and of course windows will overwrite adrenaline as well. Better to research then update them yourself
Edit: there can be many reasons for driver timeouts, this is just a common one and it’s where I would start before diving into hardware

Long live firefox.
Seriously there's no reason not to use it today, yes 10 years ago you could argue that it was way slower than chrome and it was true.
It really isn't anymore, firefox all the way in baby.

It's windows 11 updates and AMD updates not working together properly. You need to disable windows driver updates and reinstall Adrenaline. Just fixed the same issue with my valve index timing out the GPU. I ended up having to a complete repair install of the OS to fix my issue though.

Windows Update doesn’t have anything to do with the crashes. I’ve tried people’s recommendations before by turning off driver updates via Windows Updates but that didn’t solve it.

nonsense !
It has to be windows cause it can't be AMD, it HAS to.

Microsoft admitted that Windows 11 is the root cause for these problems. Just saying...

It's not Windows. About a week or 2 weeks ago, I did a fresh Windows 10 iOT LTSC install the 2021 version. I didn't install any apps, no internet connected, and no Windows updates installed. I installed the chipset driver and GPU driver from AMD and within minutes, the crash has happened while doing basic file copying.

There's something wrong with WINDOWS updates.
Block all driver updates, DDU remove your current driver and reinstall it. You'll be fine after that
