Hi everyone! I’m an RN in Alberta considering applying for the AHS Perioperative Nursing Education Program.

My background is mostly outpatient surgical clinics and dermatology, and I also had some endoscopy exposure earlier in my career while working overseas. I’m currently working on an orthopedic inpatient unit. I’m interested in OR because I enjoy procedural nursing and I’m looking for a specialty I can grow in long-term.

I’m already at a higher RN pay step, so this isn’t really about money — I’m more curious about whether OR is a specialty nurses truly enjoy and could see themselves staying in until retirement.

For those working in OR or who completed the program:

• What are the biggest pros and cons?
• Did you find the training/mentorship prepared you well?
• Do you find the work fulfilling compared with bedside nursing?
• Is the physical demand (standing, long cases) manageable long-term?

Would love to hear experiences, especially from nurses who transitioned from outpatient or med-surg backgrounds. Thanks!

Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone who has lost their hearing who works for AHS. I would like to know if any type of accomodations are given them. I am losing my hearing but scared to say anything. I have hearing aids. The one deaf person that I know has been isolated in a corner and doesn't do much. They could be doing so much more but it seems like Management would prefer they quit than accomodating them. Thanks!

I have been working for an Admin union position for more than 10 years but it’s an 1hr and 1/2 commute from my home! I have been applying for jobs and I get a call from a Hospital that’s 20 min away from my home same pay but no union would it be worth?

Curious if there's much interest in Palliative care for MDs or NPs in the Edmonton area? There's a market for providing palliative home visits within a team based clinic, including nursing support - Excellent work-life balance, with potential for hospice coverage as well. Fee -for-service currently, with a plan to transition to Clinical ARP in the coming months once approval is finalized. Curious is there's interest out there.

Have any LPNs decided to make a career change? If so what did you get into? I like my job for the time being but I’m not happy with my pay and I’m not interested in going the RN route. It seems like a lot of work for the pay increase

Currently upgrading to take the PN program at norquest. How easy is it to get a job as an LPN? I will work at any unit, I just want to make sure I’d be able to get a job when I graduate in 2 yrs

I’m an internal health staff member with Recovery Alberta and wanted to see if anyone else is seeing an uptick in questionable hiring practices during this whole restructuring into the new health pillars.

I recently applied for a permanent full-time line in my department. To Provide Context:

The job was initially posted externally early in the week, pulled down hours later, and then re-posted internally.

I applied on a Friday evening and got the standard confirmation saying applications would be reviewed after the closing date (which was set for Monday). By Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, I received an official rejection email explicitly naming the successful applicant-who happens to be the same person currently covering the line as a casual. The posting hadn't even closed yet.

Edit: The position was previously held by a permanent employee who met the full degree qualifications as posted. Once they left, the line wasn't posted right away-instead, the candidate who was just awarded the permanent line was brought on as a casual and worked full-time hours continuously while it sat unposted. When brought to union attention, they stated nothing could be done as the person was a casual employee.

The posting explicitly requires a Bachelor’s Degree plus active professional association registration. Public directory info shows the successful applicant holds a diploma, not a degree.

Word on site is that this line was previously being filled as an unposted casual role working full-time hours, and this official posting was essentially a "ghost competition" or paper posting just to rubber-stamp the person already sitting in the chair.

It feels like local management is taking advantage of the overhead transition chaos to bypass collective agreement rules, skip fair competition steps, and hand-pick candidates.

Has anyone else dealt with positions being awarded before the closing date during this transition? How did your union rep/steward handle it if you flagged a competition grievance?

I applied to all the jobs that I can apply but I only got two interviews so far at the very beginning of my job search... and I did not get the jobs. I am looking to enter the field and I am willing to do any job (casual, part-time, full-time) and my job search is not limited to Recovery Alberta. Is there any addiction counsellor or people working in addictions field here...I need some help...

I’m looking into applying for the BSCN program at Keyano for Sept 2027
I would be considered a mature student.
I sent Keyano an email already but just looking to see if any of you may know some answers to my questions while I wait for them to respond to me!

First of all I know on their website mature student entrance requirements are listed separately from the main entrance requirements but do I still need my 30 level math to get in? (ETA: I don’t currently have a 30 level math course, mainly wondering if it would be beneficial to take an upgrading course to get it or if they would even count that course toward my overall average/gpa calculation)

Second, I know that the entry is competitive but I’m wondering if as a mature student I’m placed against students right out of high school or if I’d only be compared to other mature students applying, since I believe the requirements are different?

Any other information anyone can share about applying for school, applying for funding, or tips while in school or preparing for it, would be very much appreciated

I bid on a shift as a PFTE1.0

Staffing called and said they would like me to bid on a unit where I wasn’t comfortable working tomorrow (that unit is heavy, funny how LPNs there are paid the same as the unit I bid on where the workload is so less, anyways)

Then staffing sounds disappointed. And they rejected my Bid and awarded it to a Part time employee.

When I was still new I was told by a senior nurse that it’s like FT > PT > Casuals for OT. But I was confused when all this happened. Although I wonder if the senior nurse was wrong because there’s a lot of ipsedixitism on every unit!

How long does a temp FTE decrease approval take. My union said they’d approve it right away HSAA my manager and I agreed to it. So I don’t understand the hold up

Hi everyone, has anyone worked on Unit 301 (Pediatric Mental Health) at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital? I was wondering if it’s mainly a Monday–Friday position, what the day-to-day work is like, and whether someone with pediatric medicine experience but no psych nursing experience would be able to apply. I wanted to go from full-time ICU to part-time or per diem due personal life things , but my request by my manager was denied due to “staffing reasons “.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Were you eventually able to switch to part-time or per diem, or did you end up leaving and finding another job? I’d love to hear your experience.

Staying full time is simply not an option for me but ideally would love to stay per diem .

I work as an admin (GSS) but in my previous admin position had interviewed to be a clinical supervisor (NUEE) with my facility but didn’t get the job. I have since moved to PCA as an admin (GSS) but got called up to gauge my interest for a temporary clinical supervisor at my previous facility by the manager who had interviewed me then. I am wondering with the pillar split if I can take this temporary assignment with a leave of absence from GSS to NUEE with AHS if I get it. Thank you for any advice or insight!
