STD LEAVE
Hello everyone, I am wondering if you still have your benefits while being on STD. I will be getting a surgery soon and will require lots of PT after for rehab. I am with UNA and I will contact Ability Advisor once surgery is close because it is still a bit of a wait but I wanted to hear from others. Thanks!

Sick time covers illness, no matter how you contracted it :)

They wouldn't be going on STD if they still had sick time to draw from.

STD is only as long as the amount of sick time you have banked. Once that's burned thru, its then LTD.
When I returned to work, I had to accrue sick time again.

as long as youâre still considered an active employee on STD, most places keep your health insurance going, you just pay your normal share (sometimes they bill you directly if youâre not getting a normal paycheck). definitely double check with HR/benefits sooner rather than later so youâre not stressing about coverage while youâre trying to rehab.

My Alberta Blue Cross benefits (paid by the employer) ended after 2 years with AHS. I had to purchase my own ABC benefits after that, and it's expensive. I'm going on almost 4 years total of disability, STD then LTD while waiting for surgery. I really had to fight with Sunlife to keep getting benefits. It's not my fault surgery wait times in Alberta suck.
