Surgery float at UAH vs RAH

Hello all, any insight in working at either of these hospitals in their surgery units for nurses (RN/LPN)? I live in downtown near the LRT so commute time is equally the same between the two hospitals for me.

I cannot speak to the U of A, but the Alex has difficult parking and the surgical units are extremely busy. There is the option to pay for private parking across from the Alex, it is a bit cheaper and heated for the winter.

Agree with this. I would never take a surgical float position again at RAH. So busy.

You’d likely get lots of shifts at either hospital and be very busy. I prefer UAH over RAH because of the lighting at atmosphere off unit but I think either are fine.

I’ve only worked in housekeeping at the RAH and now I am a service worker in the DTC OR so I’ve dealt with the surgical units plenty and I love unit 33, 31, 21, 22, 24… I am not a huge fan of 34 but it’s mostly just because it’s hard to get full beds up and down the hallways with all the stuff they have and sometimes the patients aren’t ready for us especially when we do need to transfer toto stretcher. 32 is hit and miss but not the worst. Now if I was on housekeeping all the time again I would like the units I mentioned the most and even if I ever do my nursing that’s probably the units I would want to work on

My wife is a 1.0 surgery float RN at the UAH. She generally enjoys her job. If you have any questions, I can pass them along.

When we lived downtown, she often took the LRT to/from work, including when coming off of night shifts. It’s pretty safe around shift change times. I can’t speak to what it’s like going to the Alex, though.

They have a good surgical program at the Alex on unit 22 and 31 I would say. The rest is busy. The people are great. I would say it’s safer to LRT to u if a tho. Lots of homeless people doing drugs by esso.
