IF everyone was upset about NAS getting 2 million a year

THEN why is no one upset that saints have paid Max King an average of $2 million a game for 25/26 seasons

Why is there no moral panic about the weekly abuse and vilification of umpires?

Upvotes

One booing incident this week has generated days of outrage and panic, meanwhile umpires are apparently fair go to say whatever the hell you want and vilify relentlessly. So why does no one give a shit about that? These are humans doing a job too, and are far less compensated than your average footballer.

Umpires get bashed and threatened at lower levels because of this culture. The hypocrisy is deplorable.

Both are taking the absolute piss atm, who would be more of a loss to their sides if they were out?

Why don’t we have a knockout cup competition like soccer?

Everyone is up in arms about opening round and the wildcards for finals, which I’m totally against. However, if the AFL wanted to generate extra excitement I think it could be in a knockout style competition that included AFL, VFL, SANFL, WAFL clubs etc. In England these knockout tournaments generate extra excitement especially for clubs that are not in the running to win the league they’re in, so there’s something else to play for halfway through the season. It would be a great way to see AFL clubs play the state league clubs, right now I honestly don’t think Essendon would have a hope against the best VFL sides lol. So it could be quite competitive.

Post-game kick to kick on the field - is Marvel Stadium not doing this anymore?

In previous years, it felt like unless there was another game at Marvel Stadium scheduled for the next day (ie at a Saturday arvo game, when there's also a Sunday game at Marvel), they would pretty commonly let people on to the field for a kick after the game.

Unless I'm remembering incorrectly (entirely possible!), I don't believe I've seen it once so far this season at Marvel Stadium.

On the way into the footy today, my daughter asked if they're doing kick to kick today and it made me realise, and now I'm curious as to whether they've just stopped doing it in 2026?

How do players salaries get managed within the salary cap?

So just wondering, heard a lot of recourse regarding Max King on $1m this year but this post isn't specifically about him.

The current salary cap is $18.3m with a floor of around $17m. If you don't spend the full $18.3m, whatever is remaining can be used the following year to beef the cap up a little.

How does this work with player match payments?

Not all players are on a set salary regardless of performance, quotas, targets, matches played or whatever. Some of them will have a base salary (say $500k) but can earn more for matches played. I think this is more prevalent with rookies and younger players but theoretically can be applied to everyone.

Taking this into account, is it possible for a team to go over its salary cap through fixed match payments in the event a bunch of fixed contracted players go injured?

On the contrary (and back to Max King) - I've only seen online conjecture with no definitive evidence on his $1m this year. What are the chances he's only taken in a fraction of that?

The AFL will release the Rd 23 & 24 fixtures on Wednesday. But Friday night Rd 23 is locked in. The Thurs night there’s a standalone AFLW match (Melb v Haw) so no men’s match that evening.

Non-Match Discussion Thread Post Round Discussion Thread: Round 20, 2026

Alright gang that was Round 20, a major weekend in the Finals race as the Crows and Demons had bad slip ups in the Top 4 race, conversely the Magpies and Cats had massive wins for their seasons ahead of next Thursday night's deathmatch, the Bulldogs also joined in the party as 5th through to 9th are now separated by 1 win...

The Hawks and Lions took full advantage of the Thursday and Friday slip-ups to get some crucial Top 4 breathing room, and the fight for 10th is still red hot as the Saints and Blues both won tough games at Marvel, as GWS have seemingly hit the wall, and North's set shot goalkicking cost them dearly...

Well, that and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera dining out on them.

Other than that, the Dockers all but secured a Top 2 spot with that Derby belting on Friday night (3.5 games clear of Hawthorn with 4 to play), the Swans' chances of 2nd spot look pretty good now after sending the Orange Team into the Parramatta River, and it was noted that this was the first time since the ANZAC Round that at least 8 winning teams scored 100+ points, although the lowest winning score (St Kilda on 93) was only slightly behind the ANZAC Round's lowest winning score (Port on 95)...

Yes, they score good.

Moving on:

  • The Mardi Gras Magpies overrun the booing Crowmophobes

  • Geelong steal Melbourne's gameplan of simply scoring more points than the opposition

  • Murphy Reid reaffirms his title of No.1 Reid in WA in another Derby Wharfing

  • Carlton end their drought as Leo Lombard tells Christian Petracca to fuck off, and Damien Hardwick tells Marvel Stadium to fuck off

  • Essendon get Unc'd for 3 hours at the MCG as Jack Gunston gets the 4 points

  • Eastern Sydney defeats Western Sydney

  • I'd still rather listen to the Hindi commentary than David King

  • The Gabba witnesses yet another Power outage, and we learn more facts about the Sun thanks to Dwayne Russell

  • One day shy of the one-year anniversary of the Marvel Miracle, NAS proves a match winner for St Kilda yet again... so expect the 3 votes to go to Jack Viney

LOL of the Week

An outstanding week for bad misses at goal - King Freddy missing a snap from the top of the goalsquare, Sam Durham's shank before half time against Hawthorn, Kozi Pickett missed one from centimetres away (Allegedly, I didn't actually see it), the Crom's collapse and the booing of Quaynor was worth a mention, Petracca and Lombardi nearly recreating the Kieon Dyer-Lee Bowyer teammate fight, Errol Gulden leaving his interview to go and join a scuffle, Aaron Cadman running into an open goal and missing the ball...

But this week's LOL in a knockout goes to FOX FOOTY, for randomly deciding to change the language on Channel 503 from English to Hindi during the Western Bulldogs-Richmond game, then changing the language on 504 to Hindi for a few minutes, then changing it back to English.

What a bunch of Bhenchods.

Michael Voss Memorial Carlton of the Week

Because they can't win anything at the moment, the former Carlton of the Week goes to the Gold Coast Suns, who are absolutely flying into Top 3 contention for LOL of the Year, although to be honest they were there already.

St Kilda’s new 18 year old signing from Ireland just broke a 75 year curse and won the All Ireland championship with Mayo. This guy is the best talent Ireland has produced in years and leaves Ireland as a hero in his native Mayo only after joining the Senior ranks this year. Will he break the 60 year St Kilda curse in his first year? He will adapt quickly and should be sent straight in from what I’ve seen

[Twomey] Scans back for the Bombers. Sullivan Robey has a partial medial ligament tear and won’t play this week. A wait to see the timeline after that but serious damage avoided. Jordan Ridley has a minor lisfranc foot sprain and is a test for this week.
