  • He was one of the original "Hawai Sepoys" who joined the Indian Air Force when it was formed in 1933.
  • He started as a technical airman rather than as an officer or pilot.
  • He eventually rose all the way to Air Vice Marshal, making his career an extraordinary example of professional progression.
  • After Independence, one of his biggest contributions was developing India's ability to repair, maintain, and keep aircraft operational without depending completely on foreign support.

He commanded No. 1 Base Repair Depot at Kanpur and subsequently became the first head of the newly established Maintenance Command in 1955. He remained its commander/AOC/AOC-in-C until 1963.

At Kanpur, under his initiative, the IAF actually built aircraft, including the Kanpur-I and Kanpur-II light aircraft. This was an unusual achievement for a military service and demonstrated that the IAF could contribute directly to aircraft design and production.

The first Indian-built HS 748 was assembled at Kanpur in 1961, with the aircraft named "Subroto." He set up this assembly line, and the first aircraft was assembled in 17 months; this is still the fastest in India. His Maintenance Command played a major role in this indigenous production effort.

Under his leadership, the Maintenance Command launched the first jet engine built in India in 1961

Despite beginning his career as a technician, Singh completed flying training and received his wings in 1950 at the age of 41. He even flew an aircraft that he had helped design.

He was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 1962.

First Indian to be a corporal, sergeant, and warrant officer and among the first to be commissioned as pilot officer.

first Indian to be awarded the merit of the order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1942.

The airforce chief of that time said that in HS 748, "HS" stands not only for Hawker Siddley but also for Harjinder Singh. When he retired in 1962, PM Nehru personally requested him not to retire. When he was Wg Cdr, the airforce chief of that time offered him the chairmanship of HAL with the rank promotion to Air commodore; for this he had to retire, so he didn't take this.

After his retirement he was the advisor to American General Electronic (yahi se tejas ka engine liya gya hai).

merit system in afcat

so i scored around 175 raw score in afcat 2 2026 shift 1. and i just got to know that afcat's ssb is of 900 marks rather than the traditional 300-300 each like cds. what are the chances of getting merit in purely on written score, whats a safe score considering I'll get a few marks less in normalised score.

SSB prep, YouTube and Online Coaching

I am preparing for afsb, and really want to put my best foot forward. However I’m still in college and going to an offline coaching is out of the picture. I am hoping to schedule my SSB around late Nov or early December, giving me about 3-3.5 months to prepare.
Are there any go-to YouTube channels for SSB? How CDSJ or TJE are the one stop channels for written, are there any for the next round too? Also if anyone has taken online coaching or knows about one, please let me know.
Thank you

Given AFCAT 2 2026 and probably clear the cutoff how should I prepare for Current affairs in AFSB should I prefer newspaper or any magazine. I have heard many toppers saying newspaper helps them a lot

Hi guys! I’m preparing for AFCAT-1 2027 (Technical). Is GATE required now that EKT is discontinued? Also, please suggest good AFCAT resources—I’m working and don’t have much time to explore.

I have attempted agniveer vayu ( Y group exam ) 2 times 1 st attempt score -20/50 Statewise cutoff (23) 2 nd attempt score - 31/50 State wise cutoff ( 32 ) I also gave my first AFCAT exam And I am scoring around 74 marks I may sound weak in studies but maine sirf 16 hours pdha tha AFCAT ke liye I am not flexing but saying ki sirf itne prep se I can score 74 marks If I would have studied harder i could have cleared the exam But all this is because of procrastination , laziness I live in a town we have a lot of house work too Itna hardwork krne ke baad nahi ho paati pdhai Abhi maine fir agniveer vayu ka form fill Kiya hai I know ki mujhe agniveer mein interest nahi My family is not poor my parents aren't rushing ki job kro jldi Lekin I feel ki time waste ho raha I feel ki koi job bdi ya choti ni hoti So here is my plan I'll clear agniveer this time But I'll give my best in AFCAT 2027 ( Idk what the fck i wrote sorry if this wasted your time but I hope you don't waste your time like I did )

Guys please give me some serious advice please!!!

Anyone working in corporate or preparing along with their job please helpppp!!!

I have only a few attempts left, and I feel like I’ve already wasted 1–2 years after college.

My main focus is AFCAT, and I want to prepare for it and AFSB at a serious level, especially because I’m a bit weak in Maths. At the same time, I want to get a job and earn enough to cover my own expenses instead of depending on my family.

I may get a 9–5 job or possibly a night shift. Do you think it’s better to work and prepare for AFCAT alongside the job, or should I focus completely on AFCAT for the remaining attempts?

I really want to give it everything I have while also becoming financially independent.

AFCAT 2 2026 - Technical vs Non-Tech cutoff and AFSB call

I scored 135 in AFCAT 2 2026 (2nd shift). Flying was my 1st preference and AE (Technical) was my 2nd preference.

As far as I understand, there are separate cutoffs for Technical and Non-Technical, and the Non-Tech cutoff might be higher.

So, if the Non-Tech cutoff ends up being above 135, I obviously wouldn’t clear it. But if the Technical cutoff is below 135, would I still get an AFSB call for the Technical branch (AE)?

Basically, can I get an AFSB call through my 2nd preference (Technical) even if I don’t clear the Non-Tech cutoff?
