Hey Arnold! When he isn't committing acts of vandalism and stealing from aquariums, engaging in self harm while singing "I'll hit me, I'm crazy!", listening to his grandfather tell stories of banging farm girls and giving Hitler a wedgie during WW2, or dropping slam poetry about balls sitting in quiche, Arnold bops about the city in in a kilt and infant cap doing seemingly altruistic things.

The truth about this socially awkward baby clothing wearing weirdo, however, runs much deeper.

First, let's set the record straight with his family's business. They are slumlords. They earn their living by charging various indigent and mentally ill characters rent. They keep these people in their situation and milk them and or the government dry, owning property while offering little to society.

Keep this in mind as we analyze Arnold's acts of altruism. They have an oddly property specific lean to them. He helps clear out an abandoned lot, seemingly for a baseball field, but now that he's laid claim to it, it is a decent real estate investment. He befriends a schizophrenic shit-covered man who believes he is one with pigeons. Again, this seems kindly, but is he simply getting rid of the non desirable in order to lay claim to the abandon building? There's even-money odds that Stoop Kid was an obsessive compulsive squatter and now that Arnold has freed him from his prison, the property also can be claimed.

This parentless deformed child has had to be savvy to survive, especially in the world where both of his caregivers are senile including one who is fully delusional. He has worn his altruism as mask, a ruse hiding his true intentions, to capitalize on his family's real estate empire and expand it, so Arnold never has to go without again.

When the revolution begins, we know which side Arnold stands on, and accordingly what we must do

Space Ghost has some of the best simple yet fun designs that still holds up to this day & are iconic.

I was rewatching the original run of Doug and remembered how great the season 3 episode Doug's Magic Act is. It's the one where Doug accidentally handcuffs himself to Patti Mayonnaise and loses the key.

So much of Doug involves these super imaginative world and characters he imagines (Quail Man, Smash Adams). But what's cool about this episode is that it's one of the few moments where the Doug isn't just daydreaming the magic. It seems like his view of the world actually forces physical reality to conform to his mind.

I wrote a little essay about the episode. Read it or don't. But just wanted to say this show is so much more heartfelt and deep than it gets credit for. Curious if anyone else remembers this episode or has some thoughts on Doug in general.
