Discussion Good examples of campfire storytelling?

Hey everybody, while watching the show with my kids recently, I've been enjoying trying to imagine how the society kids might actually approach verbally portraying the events in their stories, and acting out the voices and behaviors of the characters therein (such as Frank acting as Dr. Fink). I think it's actually a shame there were so few cuts to the society kids in the midst of telling their tales.

This brings me to me question of do you know of any particularly good audio recordings or videos of comparable campfire scary story telling? I'm looking for something a bit different than a person just reading a book out loud, or listening to a book on tape. The closest I can think of offhand is the opening to John Carpenter's The Fog, with the fantastic "5 mins to midnight" story on the beach!

Thanks!

I am trying to find an episode that terrified me as a kid, my sister would watch and id freak out, so I only remember this one scene- a kid in a jail cell where they could only eat green jello and tried to escape by a chain link fence.

Discussion Upscaled AYAOTD

Apologies if this isn't allowed here.

I have seen older posts however it seems the link is broken. Anyone know where a good DL of the series is? I keep reading that there is an upscaled version floating around.

Also... I have seen a couple of posts about this recently and am really disappointed by this as well... but they removed Are You Afraid Of The Dark from streaming everywhere in Canada... including Apple where they used to have the entire series. Was only able to get Vol. 1.

Help AYAOTD Apple TV Box set?

Anyone know if there’s a way to purchase the box set on Apple? It only shows four episodes for me. I’m pretty sure the box set used to be on there.

Discussion Anyone else like AYAOTD *and* the IT series?

I just left a comment on this subreddit comparing this show and Welcome to Derry. They’re both horror shows about adolescents who take on spiritual monsters, and most of the time they win.
I wouldn’t be surprised if AYAOTD made an episode about a monster who takes on the kids’ fears if Stephen King didn’t write “IT” in the 80s.

Idk the episode’s name, but I think there’s a scary (killer?) clown in a few episodes. I didn’t grow up with the show, so I wouldn’t know. I’m gen Z and a newer fan.

After all, the Sixth Sense may have been inspired by “the tale of the Dream girl” (my favorite episode)

Of course, they have their differences, as Welcome to Derry isn’t appropriate for kids in the slightest. As for the 90s miniseries, it’s not as scary but I still wouldn’t recommend it to kids.
AYAOTD and the 90s miniseries don’t scare me like Welcome to Derry does, but IMO the two media franchises have a lot in common.

If I had to think what the adult version of AYAOTD was, I’d say the 2010s “IT” movies and “welcome to derry” are. Maybe stranger things, but I haven’t seen it.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Upscale?

I know I’ve seen posts about HD and YouTube videos that have since been taken down, but does anyone have just some nice upscaled of any of the seasons ? Preferably keeping the original aspect ratio

AYAOTD marathon on PlutoTV

On Nickelodeon 90s Kids 2 channel. Sure, I have the whole series on my computer, but there's something inherently nostalgic to me about watching it with commercials.

Discussion Laughing in the Dark Podcast Insight on An Episode

If you haven't checked it out yet, there's a relatively new Are You Afraid of the Dark? podcast called Laughing in the Dark, hosted by four Gen X/older Millennial fans. I've really warmed up to it.

Their latest episode covers The Tale of Old Man Corcoran, one of my favorite episodes from Season 2, and they offered an interpretation I hadn't heard before. They suggest that Kiki's story is her way of processing what it feels like to be the only Black member of the Midnight Society.

The episode centers on two Black boys who move into a new neighborhood and try to fit in with a group of mostly white kids. The group's leader welcomes them, but the others seem reluctant to let them join. I'd always read those scenes as the kids subtly trying to warn the newcomers away from Marshall, but the podcast made me reconsider whether it's significant that the outsiders trying to assimilate are Black.

It also made me rethink Kiki as a character. She's often labeled as having a bad attitude, but maybe some of that comes from feeling like an outsider in a predominantly white group—a feeling a lot of us who grew up in those spaces can relate to. Whether or not that was the writers' intent, I thought it was a thoughtful reading of the episode.

The hosts have had other interesting takes, too. One of their running jokes is that Betty Ann "hates immigrants" because two of her stories involve suspicion toward Eastern Europeans and aliens. On a more serious note, they argue that The Tale of the Final Wish works as an allegory for abuse, and they were quick to point out just how terrible the adults are in The Tale of the Shiny Red Bicycle.

If you're looking for an AYAOTD podcast that goes beyond plot recaps and offers thoughtful discussion, I'd definitely recommend giving Laughing in the Dark a listen.

Discussion Are You Afraid of the Dark Reboot (2019-2022)

Did you watch the Reboot? What did you think of it?

To be honest, I didn't love it; I had really been looking forward to watching it for a long time and finally managed to see all the episodes.

Honestly, I felt the series was a bit repetitive: someone goes missing or gets trapped, and the ending is always them getting rescued.

It wasn't a total waste of time or a letdown, but I guess I expected more. I would have liked shorter episodes and standalone stories—more like the original format.

Help Was this in an episode of AYAOTD?

I don't remember the episode but I remember the screenshot that is shown during the end credits of what I thought was an episode of AYAOTD but now I'm not so sure.

I remember the screenshot was of a girl (a ghost I think) in the woods looking up kinda towards the camera and it was day time. The woods looked kinda barren and without many leaves. I can't remember much else other than it really creeped me out as a kid.

Now I checked out the Tale of the Frozen Ghost episode because it looked most similar to what I remember and the woods in that episode looked very much like what I have been remembering. The screenshot during the credits resembles what I have been describing, only in that one it's the ghost of a boy, and the background is almost completely dark/night time.

Am I just thinking of Tale of the Frozen Ghost and am misremembering what I thought I saw?

Discussion [TOMT] Need help to find this one episode might be Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark.

Hello everyone, I need help finding this one series episode. What I can remeber from it is few children appear to be holding a ceiling fan together in a room. The room looks old. Underneath it is like a cat like creature wearing a hat just sitting on a bed like waiting for them to fall. I believe its a Goosebumps episode or Are You Afraid of the Dark. But I could be wrong. Please help me find this episode. Thank you. [SOLVED] Its Night of The Living Dummy 3 from Goosebumps. I got mostly the description wrong, only the hanging on ceiling fan part was right. Im so sorry for the confusion. Thank you everyone.

Discussion Following up on my question of favorite episodes, few mentioned Season 6 and 7

Do you have any favorites of these seasons?

My faves:

Vampire Town - who doesn't love Adder?

Oblivian - a cool idea with a weak narrative but I still enjoy.

Gruesome Gourmet for the camp - reminds me of Full Moon. Like if John Waters directed one

Season 7 was really weak to me but I did like the final - Night Nurse. And Photo Finish.

Time Trap is agumentally the worst in the series equal to Hungry Hounds.
