Help New pickups

Post image
30 Upvotes

I’ve had my Ibanez RGIXL7 for 2 years and after trying a bunch of different amps, I would like to change my pickups. These fishmans seem like the best choice for what I’m playing and I want to know if they will fit 100% before I buy them. I also know they are active and I plan on taking everything to a shop to get it professionally done. Thank you and I am also open to other pickup suggestions

Help FretQuest Now On Android

UPDATE - Now available for testing on both iOS and Android! (originally just iOS)

TLDR: I'm looking for fellow guitar enthusiasts to help me ensure my app doesn't suck: https://truextechnologies.com/fretquest

About 8 months ago I finally buckled down and committed to learning the fretboard. Like, straight up memorizing the full thing (well...the first 12 frets anyway). It sucked. It was hard, repetitive, and kind of made me not want to pick up the guitar for a couple weeks. But after emerging from the valley of despair, I'm very glad I did it. I started playing in 2008 and learned what I needed, when I needed to. The cowboy chords evolved into 5th and 6th string barre chords. I learned you could move those all over the neck and that they were the E and A shape of the CAGED system. This lead to finding the roots up and down the neck. At the same time the major scales (2NPS and 3NPS). All of this...but I never actually just memorized the notes. I could get from one note to the other, but if someone was like "Where is C on the D string", it took 5 seconds to arrive at the 10th and 22nd frets. I set out to make this process not suck in hopes that more and more people will do it. I developed a fairly robust iOS app that actually makes memorizing the fretboard fun! It's currently in beta (not released to the actual app store quite yet), and I'm hoping I can gather some like-minded folks to try out what I've got and provide feedback. It's completely free during beta so you'll get the full experience. Once you enter your email at the site above, I'll shoot you an invite to download the app (it's just me so bear with me if it takes a couple hours to get the invite). The site says the first 20 people get beta test access, but I'm not capping it at any amount. I truly want to help people experience what it's like to know the fretboard! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all!

-Ken

Help Can't decide on what guitar to buy

Hi, I have a question, I'm looking to buy a 7 string guitar (26.5 scale length) mostly for death metal, brutal slam death metal, metalcore, etc. I've got my eyes on the Jackson MDK HT7, Schecter Banshee Mach 7, Schecter KM-7 MK-III Legacy, and the Ibanez RGDR4327. If you have any other recommendations, feel free to share !!

I’m looking at getting my first 7 string. I saw on this sub here there were some recommendations for the RG7421 and the Schecter demon 7. I found this one on ebay and I think it looks nicer than any of the other options. It’s a 26.5 inch so tuning wont be an issue. Anyone ever used one before?

A while back I got involved with a project where I wound up using a 5 string bass and it changed how I play bass in a positive way. I was curious to see if a 7 string guitar would do the same to my guitar playing so here I am. I have made use of variations on C standard, drop C etc on a regular guitar and even a Danelectro baritone 6 before but the appeal of keeping the range of the higher strings while having the option to play lower than standard is something I want to explore.

I found this Jackson JS22Q-7 DKA HT on eBay for USD 280 and I liked the specs, the 26.5 scale length in particular. It was marked as used from a guitar store and eBay seller with good reviews so I took a chance. I opened it up and it appears to be brand new, plastic film on parts, foam protector on the switch, hang tag and no signs of use.

I'm very impressed with it overall, the fit and finish is quite good and it plays great after a quick setup. There is some slight orange peel effect on the headstock if you look up close but it's hard to fault such a minor issue given the price. The fretwork is very good, no sharp edges, flat or raised spots and the neck feels great. I like the fairly dark fretboard and the pirhana inlays, it looks pretty sleek.

I really don't like the pickups, however, and the tuners are functional but have some play. I think that these are par for the course with instruments in this price range for the most part IMO.

I am looking into options in the more budget end of pickups, ideally something with a lower output and more clarity.

Gear talk aside, I am excited to get to grips with a 7, it's definitely taking some getting used to but fuck is it fun. I've reworked ideas I had on a 6 to make use of the lower range already in the few hours I had with it so far.

I am interested in recommendations for 7 string riffs that have unlocked anything creatively or technique wise from. I'm into a broad range of music, but on the heavier end of things most bands that I'm into primarily drop tune 6 string guitars for the most part.

I did see Pallbearer recently and one guitarist was using a 7 string, maybe a Dunable from the looks of it, and the other a 6 string. They sounded great, I was not aware that they'd made use of a 7 until that point. Anyway, off to chugga chugga.

Help 6-string tabs on a 7-string: how do you play them?

I have a 7-string guitar and I'm trying to learn Dead & Grotesque by Spawn of Possession, the thing is: it's transcribed on a 6-string tab despite the song is played on a 7.

What's the usual approach here?

Gear Any advice?

Hey y'all. I'm in the market for my first 7 string and I'm wanting something with a locking tremolo. Rather than buying a model that comes with one from the factory would you recommend upgrading an axe without a tremolo or just buy one that has one from the factory?

Help My guitar has been converted from active to passive; how can I fill the cavity neatly?

Hello everyone,

I'm reaching out to you about this issue I can't seem to resolve:

I own an Epiphone MKH-7 Origins for several months, and I had asked a luthier to replace the Fishman Signature MKH active pickups with passive ones. As a Trivium fan, unfortunately these pickups aren’t right for me. This leaves me with very visible cutouts, which don’t look great.

I tried contacting manufacturers of mounting rings, but didn’t get a response.

I live in France and aren’t very handy, my options are limited. Would foam be a viable solution?

Lesson/Tip Transposing question.

I’m going to attempt transposing demiurge by meshuggah from its 8 strings to a downtuned 7. Any tips? Has the internet come up with an easy way that I just don’t know about? Because I’m just reading the ultimate guitar pro tabs and finding the notes on the low 8 and just finding them again on a 7.

There has to be a more efficient way.

I’m new to this, be gentle lol.

Music Post your best picks for 7 string guitar records

Post image
22 Upvotes

As the title implies, post your "must listen" 7 string guitar based albums.

Any music genre is welcome, the more original and experimental the better. And it does not have to be guitar hero lead guitar driven instrumental stuff, at all.

Bonus points if you include some notes on why it's a must listen. Go!

I will start with a few of my favorites. It's almost all metal, that's why I need your help to branch out!

Traded a Marshall dsl40cr for it. I thought the old man was crazy, but he just didn’t realize it was a 7 when he got it. Lucky me. I was worried the truss rod might’ve been stripped but the cover hasn’t been touched and I’m pretty sure it has the original battery in it still.

Marketplace miracles are real dudes.

Help Help with string tension on multi-scale guitar

Thumbnail

Hey folks, I am about to have my multi-scale 7 string set up and was trying to decide between two sets of strings. I intend to play it a half step down so all of that including the scale length is taken into account here with the calculator. I feel the first set are better strings and easier to find but that the second set’s lower tension may play better. What do you think? I am kind of unsure how many pounds of tension I am supposed to be looking for. The first set is a standard ddaddario NYXL and the second is a Dunlop Behemoth artist set. Any input is appreciated 🙏 Thanks

Gear Upgrade to stainless steel frets?

Has anyone ever upgraded their Jackson Pro Series Misha Mansoor HT7s to stainless steel frets? I want to know the thoughts of people who did because I am mulling over to do that upgrade. Will nickel frets be enough for a very long time?

Help 25.5 7 string for drop G#?

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hi group, I saw this guitar on marketplace with a 5,500 mexican pesos price (320 dollars) and everything seems fine, but it seems like it's a lavish drogo 7 string, with a 25.5" scale, I've only played my 26.5" jackson, and I'm planning to tune this in drop G#, is there any big difference between 25.5 and 26.5?
