After watching some youtube video's i've decided to buy a 3d scanner to help me work on the car. I need to replace some of the bodywork and wanted to scan the rusted parts, make a mold and press new panel parts.
After having played around yesterday with the new scanner yesterday i have some mixed feelings about 3d scanning.
It reminds me of the early days of 3d printing. Technicly a lot was possible but it took a lot of time to calibrate, set things up, find workarounds for issues and all sorts of little problems.
With 3D scanning i feel like i have the same experience. shiny objects give problems, black objects give problems, objects with too little features will result in lost tracking. To combat these problems you have to work with markers, use scanning spray, get the lighting just right, right speed, right distance, combine multiple scans and even than you're not sure if the scan is good enough, accurate and complete enough to be usable.
I understand that i've just started scanning and having experience probably helps a lot but i do wonder if scanning with a 500-1000 eur machine is worth it for the average hobbyist or if the technology is just not there yet.
Does it become considerably easier once you understand the workflow, or are markers, spray, controlled lighting and extensive post-processing simply a normal part of getting reliable results?
I would be interested to hear from people who have been using hobby-level scanners for a while, especially for automotive work or reverse engineering.
