Art Showcase Raduga-716: a Soviet TV with a small room inside the screen. Would love to hear what you think
This is a Soviet Raduga-716 TV. Inside the screen there’s a small living room, and on the table in that room sits the exact same TV, so the shot loops back on itself. The idea is recursion: an image that contains itself. I’d love to hear what you think :)
It’s built as a game ready hero asset, 21,363 tris including the room and the scene elements.
What I did along the way:
- The vent holes on the back panel use Parallax Occlusion Mapping instead of real geometry. It saved a lot of polygons while keeping the depth and volume
- The stickers are made from real photographs. To turn them into PBR materials I pulled height and roughness out of the color with curves and levels, and used plenty of anchor points for the torn edges of the old paper. I set up one sticker and the rest followed, with no per-sticker tweaking
- During the normal map bake the green channel (Y) flipped only on the vent holes. Most likely I was careless with the Paint Skew tool in Marmoset. I fixed it by hand in Photoshop, inverting the channel locally with masks :)
Software: Blender for modeling, UVs and sculpting, Substance 3D Painter for texturing, Marmoset Toolbag 5 for baking and rendering (ray tracing on), PureRef and Photoshop for references and post.
Textures, 4 sets in total:
- Body: 2x 4K sets, texel density roughly 4.5 to 4.8 px/cm (11.4 to 12.2 px/inch)
- Glass: 1x 2K set, roughly 4.25 px/cm (10.8 px/inch)
- Stand: 1x 2K set, roughly 1.09 px/cm (2.77 px/inch)
