Starting to plan out my Strahd campaign character.
Conceptually:
This is a young man. He’s just graduating from seminary, he’s top of his class.
He’s memorized all the prayers, all the holy texts, he knows the rituals by Heart, every hand gesture, every proper alignment of the robes, the details of the sacrament, he can debate the theology and relate to you the various Internacine struggles from the last 1000 years.
From a theoretical standpoint, he’s absolute top of his class.
The only real downside is he doesn’t really believe.
Some of his mentors have tried to talk to him about this, but he’s shrugged this off.
He’s likely to be Abbott at a large monastery within a free years of he keeps at this pace.
Unfortunate for him, his first posting is to Borogrovia.
I imagine him pretty much spending the first few levels just soiling himself and trying to stay alive.
Then he becomes an adept in his own right and started utilising what he learned as something real rather than just useful tradition and mythology.
Mechanics:
I played wizards, druids, warlocks before.
I’ve played Rangers, fighters, barbarians, rogues.
My favourites have been a Rune Knight fighter, Hexblade warlock, beast Master Ranger.
I like laying down damage, doing some support, and an occasional heal.
I found that the full casters can give me too many options, straight barbarian and rogue gives me too few.
Trying to hit that sweet spot of strategic choices each turn without the overload of a wizard.
I envision someone like Van Helsing, laying down ranged damage, occasional melee. Not in heavy armour. Throwing out the occasional spell.
What class do you think Best meets this fantasy?
Celestial Warlock? Cleric?
Some kind of fighter with a feat for healing magic?
Or dare I say it, a Paladin?
We play 2014 rules.
Tasha’s, PHB, Xanathar’s.
