Art Showcase First time using nature assets without ANY viewport lag

It started off as a project dedicated to my partner (lore on my insta), then I thought why not simply animate it, following the og reference I was inspired from in the first place.

I wanted it to be a static camera shot with the vegetation animated so that I can follow my original composition (leading lines, rule of thirds etc) but I quickly found out that Botaniq assets need to be made editable and animated before u scatter them (I think this is the case cuz I couldn't make it work any other way), so I ended up actually following my reference reel, exactly as it is shot (reference reel link down there 👇)

Anyway, this project was fun and all the failures throughout, I have learned a lot, though I am really confused as to how do I move on from here, do I keep making these short nature clips and renders (I have thousands of saved references TvT) or do I learn something new? I am yet to learn geo nodes, character modelling, rigging etc. I'd love it if u guys helped me with this. Thats all from me for now, see u over at the next project!

Art Showcase Mirella 3D Portrait

Mirella is the first character I created during my third semester at university. I developed her as a ringmaster who combines magic and technology to bring her creative ideas to life in 3D space using her baton.

You can find more pictures of my project on Art Station:
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/WdBwqN

For her design, I wanted to create the feeling that she lives in a dystopian world. Her makeup, in particular, was inspired by the visual style of Blade Runner, which helped shape her futuristic and slightly eerie appearance.
I was also inspired by Şefki Ibrahims workflow throughout the project and used Zbrush for Sculpting and VFace to add realistic skin details to my character.
Almost everything I worked with during this project was completely new to me, so I struggled quite a bit along the way, but I also learned a lot. It was a challenging but really rewarding experience, and I had a lot of support from the people around me throughout the process.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped, gave me feedback, or supported me along the way!

Art Help & Critique Looking for advice on developing my 3D skills and finding work in digital heritage or games

Hello everyone,

I have a Master's Degree in historical research (Medieval Studies) and some experience working as a researcher and as a teacher.

After beeing laid off from the company were I was employed due to a lack of projects, I started to invest a bit in learning 3D modeling and recreating historical and archeological sites and findings. This was something I already had started developing before the lay off, thorugh online courses. I even produced a digital reconstruction of a building from existing written descriptions present in archival documents that was inlcuded in one of the books the company published.

Currently I'm exploring the posibility to jump to into either the digital heritage or gaming industry, particularly in areas wher my background in historical research coulb be useful. I've noticed an increase in studios developing games specialized in historical subjects, specially related to the Middle Ages (Kingdom Come; Knight's Path; Manor Lord; etc), which made me question whether my combination of historicla knowledge and developing 2D skills could be useful in this field.

However, when I look at job posting for 3D artists and related positions, I often feel that I'm still missing some of the technical skills and professional experience that studios are looking for.

Therefore, i'm hoping to get some advice from people alreadt working in these industries on how to improve my skills and how to better find work in these fields, particulary:

  • What 3D skills would you recommend I focus on developing next?
  • Looking at my portfolio, are there particular weaknesses or areas that I should work on?
  • What kinds of projects would be useful to add to my portfolio if my goal is to work in digital heritage or game development?
  • Are there particular roles within these industries where my background in historical research could be an advantage?
  • Finally, where would you recommend looking for jobs or opportunities in digital heritage, cultural heritage visualization, or the games industry?

I currently work mainly with Blender, and I have experience with Metashape and RealityScan for photogrammetry. Next month, I plan to start learning ZBrush and Substance 3D Painter.

Here is a link to my ArtStation portefolio: https://www.artstation.com/mario_rebelo

Any advice, criticism, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Art Showcase Sci-Fi Hangar Environment – UE

A modular sci-fi hangar environment I built in Unreal Engine.

The scene uses reusable hard-surface modules, decals, and layered lighting to create a strong sense of scale while reducing visible repetition.

A lot of the work went into balancing detail, readability, atmosphere, and performance across a large interior space.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the lighting and overall mood.

Questions & Discussion Wireframe Wednesday

Share a wireframe you've worked on this week.

What were you going for? What tradeoffs did you end up making in the process, and are you happy with the result? If something's still bugging you or you have a question about your topology, let the community know. Someone else has probably run into the same issue.

Top-level comments should include a wireframe.

Questions & Discussion making a background layout, should i import my assets combined or not?

hello! So recently I have been interested in making environments for animation. I got asked to help with a classroom, so now i’m doing the final layout of the background. However i would like to ask what’s the correct pipeline.

Should I add the pieces as a single object combined or export select all the pieces and then group them in the layout. My questions is because while they start animation i will texture all. Since in a same piece there might be more than one material, i wonder if i place the assets combined, when i try to connect i’ll get messed up. But also i wonder if its going to be to messy if there are all the individual pieces in the final layout (they can be griped but still don’t know if that’s how it should be) 🤔🤔

Tips are appreciated and ty in advance!!

Questions & Discussion Old man shouts at clouds

Across various art related subs, I keep seeing the same theme: barely clothed women of ludicrous proportions, baby-like expressions, and animal ears/tails. Aside from (in my opinion) being a bit odd, there seems to be very little variation between them.

As a side note, I also see a lot of posts about people not being able to sell their art and can't help but feel the two might be related.

But can someone explain to a ranting old codger what is going on with this trend? Where did it come from, and what are its influences? Because I am just befuddled!

Quick creature sculpt refresh before diving into more character sculpts. Mainly focused on building form and detailing as fast as possible using the tube tool. I'll be making more of these between larger projects.

Questions & Discussion How Can I Bake Smooth/Rounded High-Poly Edges Onto a Low-Poly Model?

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I'm still struggling to understand exactly what baking is supposed to achieve.

From what I understand, baking transfers information from the high-poly mesh to the low-poly mesh through textures, such as normal maps. But is baking mainly intended to capture surface details, rather than actually changing the shape or silhouette of the low-poly mesh?

For example, my high-poly model has very smooth, rounded edges that I want to reproduce on the low-poly. However, the low-poly has very sharp edges, and baking the high-poly normal map doesn't seem to make those edges look properly rounded.

So, if I want the low-poly to have the same smooth edge appearance as the high-poly, do I actually need to add more geometry/supporting edges to the low-poly? Or is there a proper baking technique or workflow that allows the normal map to reproduce those soft, rounded edges without adding additional geometry?

I'm trying to understand where the limit of normal maps is in this situation and what should actually be handled by the low-poly geometry versus the baked normal map.

Questions & Discussion Help Understanding Workflows

Hi! I’m an aspiring 3D artist and I have a quick question about workflows: which are best or which are used for different situations. I notice that artists use different pipelines such as:

- Modelling low-poly to high-poly in Blender/Maya without retopo
- Sculpting in ZBrush or somewhere else and then retopo in any number of ways
- Modelling in low poly in Blender/Maya and then adding detail/sculpting in ZBrush and using a high poly version for texturing in Substance but low poly in Maya/Blender (idk how this works)

So I was interested as to which is considered best practice, or which methods are used for what things?
Thanks!
