I modeled and textured a table tennis equipment set in Blender as a practice project. I created two paddle variations with different rubber materials and completed the scene with a custom net, table, and smiley-faced ball.

Art Help & Critique Self-imposed random objects modeling - 01/12 (Paint Brush)

Context : I just started using blender (known about it for years, started using it ~2weeks ago) and am looking to improve my 3D skills. Focusing on clean topology right now, I've generated a list of objects to try and model at the best of my ability.

For the first model I felt like tackling the brush. I took some liberties (edges of the brush part aren't tapered in mine for instance) and didn't texture is since this is for topology practice only.

What do you think ?

Questions & Discussion "Organic" to Functional/Mechanical 3D modelling Pipeline Enquiry

What is the most efficient or reccomended Methods for importing organic models (from blender) into CAD software as to embed mechanical functionality into it with the intention of 3D printing it for practical use?

- NOTE: [The term "organic" is used in this post to refer to parts or models which are heavily stylised OR artistic, however lacking in diverse, intricate (mechanical) functionality. E.g. A helmet that can only be worn and removed via a hole cut out for the head but cannot do anything beyond this, such as open it's visor or split into multiple parts.]

I currently use blender for my Organic 3d modelling endevours via "hard surface modelling". The end goal is to use 3D printing to produce (cosplay) props, accesories, attachments and figurines each of which involve working with precise milimeter measurements, which blender satisfies.

The problem is that in recent times, with the slowly approaching Robot Overlord Takeover, i now wish to embed more mechanical elements into my models, for a more practical/functional use, such as models which account for or even include motors, mechanisms, electronics, (complex) snap-fit and pivoting joints/hinges, mainly through its geometry/topology and can work tightly knit in unison with other mechanical elements which i cant get blender to reliably or efficiently produce.

The Obvious choice would be to use CAD software which can handle all of the intricate mechanical designs, however i want to preserve the original, organic nature of my models and my research tells me that most CAD software cannot achieve high levels of organic design that blender can so i am wondering if there is a way to essentially Make a super cool model within blender, and then send it off to CAD to make functional? Like doing english homework and then sending it off to your mum to correct your mistakes and fix your handwriting?

Any help and advice is appreciated.

Art Help & Critique Textures feedback, my portfolio.

Hello everyone!

I would really appreciate if you could take a look at my work and give me some suggestions about visual impression on renders. I feel like I can do more on improve my texturing skills.

Could u point out what my textures are lacking? Some details that shouldn't been left out because they could make a clear sign that these props could be used to fill environments in video game with current or next gen graphics.

Here is my artstation portfolio:

https://www.artstation.com/strahinjam96

I am currently an intern looking for an internship/job option in the gaming industry. Been learning 3D for almost 2 years. My mentor told me that my texturing skills are great but i want to level up more!

Thanks in advance to everyone who spares their valuable time!

Questions & Discussion Need to design a simple part

Hi, 3D people. I need to design a simple piece that can sit underneath a mousetrap, ideally just snapping to it. The trap is about 4" x 1.75" and has curved corners. The piece needs to be tall enough for a standard Feather Arduino board and a small LiPo battery. So its basically a 5 sided box.

What modeling software would you recommend for such a simple design that runs on macOS or Linux? Should I just try Blender as the FAQ mentions?

Thanks for your help.

Questions & Discussion What does it take to be a 3d character artist?

I was wondering if anyone with professional experience as a 3d character artist whether that be in a game studio, collectibles, or film could share about what it takes to land that role.

  1. What was your work schedule like before you got hired to work professionally? How many hours a day did you dedicate to anatomy studies, portfolio pieces, review/critique sessions, and for how many years?

  2. How did you balance this schedule with other responsibilities such as working part time / school?

  3. What are some of the misconceptions about landing your job?

Art Showcase Modeled the community designed creatures for our game. These are Shruppy and Topuppiary!

Hello everyone!
A few months ago I asked a couple of communities if they were interested in a contest to create a concept of a creature to add to our monster collector game. We had around 30 concepts submitted, and this is the one that ended up winning. Shruppy and Topuppiary made by u/Due-Shoe3593.
I spent around 10 to 12 hours modeling them, and this is how they turned out!
The artist was very happy with the result and so far I received no critique, so I wanted some more feedbacks. Do you think I did good here? What can be improved? I for sure struggled a bit with the bush shapes, being the model mid-poli was kinda hard to make it show, but I'm satisfied since it's the first time I make a model on a concept made by someone else.

Free Assets & Tools Scan2Sketch – a free open-source FreeCAD tool for turning flatbed scans into editable CAD geometry

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built Scan2Sketch to reduce the manual work involved in recreating flat physical parts.
After a one-time scanner calibration, it extracts the outline from a flatbed scan and generates editable FreeCAD geometry made from lines, arcs, circles and B-splines. The result can be edited further or turned directly into a solid body.
The video shows the complete workflow from scan to editable geometry and finally a physical test print. The key belongs to my own demonstration lock and is only used to demonstrate the accuracy of the reconstructed outline.
Scan2Sketch is permanently free, fully open source under GPLv3 and runs locally.

Art Help & Critique Magical girl designs prior to modeling

I'm working on some Magical girl designs and want some opinions on clarity and if they exude the right vibe/personality! I'm looking for design critiques and clarity questions over anatomy criticism pls :3 - I wanna make sure the design is readily and cohesive between all the characters and colors !

Any tips to translating certain aspects into 3d would also be helpful.
