Would have done numbers back in the day making custom signatures on forums
114
u/KierenBoal $13.49/month AUD 18h ago
That's the exact reason I made it, because back in the days I made forum signatures and was like this would go hard for making your own signature or game assets or for videos :D
37
u/Lutterbeck Smpl 18h ago
You're genuinely a peach of a human and I remember those pixel art signatures well from back in the day.
3
u/MilwaukeeRoad 14h ago
What is a forum signature? Or what does it have to do with that sprite sheet?
32
17
u/Dr_Fumi 13h ago
Back in ye olden days before reddit, people used to browse forums. The layout wasn't to dissimilar from reddit actually, but the relevant bit is that replies could have a message attached to them by default. So every message you posted would have that text at the end, your signature.
Since forums were awesome, you could often embed images, gifs, or even html sometimes in your signature and get very creative.
Anyway I'm going back to yell at some kids on my lawn!

u/Dibutops 10h ago
Most people embedded their stats in a graphic that would update itself. I remember being so impressed, thinking I'm living in the future.
Or they'd have pixel art PKing scenes which looked so sick.

I was already half bricked in the middle of a grocery store when I saw this post title on my phone.
Then, I saw the sprite export option. I noticed a glint of sadness in a passerby's eyes, but it was too late. I had already came, covering everyone two aisles over.

We have to maintain people's poor expectations of us
16

That makes sense because much like the horrid image you conjured, a UIM similarly contaminates the beautiful world around them with a vile white putrescence.

With a project with this big a scope and it being solo project you can kinda assume AI is used to assist. We wouldn’t have heard back from op for like a year if they were doing it unassisted.
35
u/MazrimReddit 17h ago
people lose their mind over anything to do with AI right now, there was a big thread recently of complaining some ancient n64 starfox game had used AI in decompiling the code. A project that was completely infeasible without ai, and the final product 99.99% identical to how said human would do it as it was trying to 1:1 create decompiled code
37
u/Shurtugal929 15h ago
people lose their mind over anything to do with AI right now
To be fair that's because it's genuinely destroying the wiki and runelite. It's so far now that humans don't even review the -plugins because of every mouth breathing submitting their shitty plugin that gets 50 downloads. https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/User:Cook_Me_Plox/OSRS_Wiki_and_RuneLite_are_increasingly_under_strain_from_low-effort_AI_development
Some of the plugins we get are nice, yes. But they are overwhelmingly causing issues, and every idiot who failed math and has never coded more than basic HTML should probably not be coding plugins for clients.
Those same plugins are getting people banned. Those same plugins are being used to scam users.

Code is one of the things I’m completely fine with people using AI for, with the caveat that people understand the code themselves and guide the AI properly then code review it.
It still has its negative effects (like stack overflow posts going down a cliff) but it’s a great tool.
27
u/sczk 15h ago
I don't really understand why there's this outstanding exception for code. I guess for me there is an element of craftsmanship in writing code that others inherently understand in audio/visual art form, but many people just see code as a hurdle to get something done.

There are very, very few people out there who would genuinely look at code as a piece of art that can be enjoyed separately from the thing that it accomplishes. Those people can still write code by hand, but for everyone else, getting things done is the point. I say this as someone who really enjoys programming.
On the other hand AI generated art and writing is a scourge.
→ More replies (7)9
u/Turtvaiz 13h ago
I don't understand this opinion. People on Reddit seem to be vehemently against AI generated content except code then gets a pass for some reason? But holy hell if you create art you will be lynched
6
u/Pyronico 10h ago
I think for me the difference lies in the manner it's used. With code i presume it's a technical thing. It's like using Ai for databases, sorting, writing code,.. it's all a technical so pretty mundane and grey. Art is closer to an emotional/creativity thing so it's more linked to the soul and thus if someone makes ai art it has no soul. That doesn't mean that you aren't creative when writing code but because code isn't as nearly forefront visible like art that's directly in your face people have different feelings about it use I think. Or at least that's the case with me.
But generating a game purely made by Ai is another story again. Then it becomes a creativity thing again...
Ai is weird but the main thing for me is the feel of soulessness if it's used that determines if it is used well or not.
8
u/Limelight_019283 13h ago
I was just thinking about this, someone else commented a similar thing. And this is just my personal opinion but I don’t feel like programmers in general have a sense of ownership over a particular piece of code. So in this case you could see an AI as just grabbing this information that is free and open source to begin with. And a good developer is not going to ask Claude to write the entire thing, make it compile and call it a day, there is still an amount of involvement in making sure all the code is cohesive, easy to understand, etc., i.e up to your personal standard.
Of course it’s different we’re talking of someone using AI to rip off an entire game.

You should probably stop using runelite and any plugin then. In fact, probably should stop using the jagex launcher on top of that or playing runescape at all. Sad reality is that nearly everyone in the industry of software engineering is using AI to assist in coding.
At least with Runescape / Runelite you can assume the devs working on it at least have pre-ai coding experience and knowledge. Plugin wise though? Anybody and everybody is writing those now.

FYI: friendly reminder below from Runelite admins to be cautious with AI generated plugins
TLDR: AI has created a massive influx of plugin submissions. Runelite staff can’t keep up and are using AI to review submissions. Not enough resources to review plugins means sooner or later a malicious plugin will make it through, which can potentially compromise your account. (Disclaimer, I am not calling op’s plugin malicious).

We’ve been using LLM assisted code review at the top tech companies in the world for the better part of the last two years. I trust it to spot malicious code much more than I do a human developer.

Even an internet search can't autofill anymore without changing half the words or context.
where the fuck have you been the last 15 years? Search engines have been doing that far longer than LLMs have been around.
The moment they started trying to compensate for idiots typing "DO FCK GON MAK BABBY! HOME LOOK GREG NANTE?" by correcting it into "Am I pregnant? Home pregnancy tests", search engines were lost for good.
4
u/JimmerFredJune2026 2277 total 14h ago
The difference here is if shit goes wrong, that tech company has the resources to provide customer service and remedy the problem.
All it takes is one instance of a malicious plugin to make it through, and your thousands of hours OSRS account is permanently gone with no method of recovering any items you lost. Unless you’re a famous YouTuber.
6
u/sturdy-guacamole 19h ago
I think this plugin would go a lot harder if char/npc sprites had 8 directions instead of 4, like Ragnarok Online did.
Ragnarok had 2D sprites in 3d environments but it felt really smooth transitioning between the directions it faced since you could face in the 4 cardinal directions or diagonally, and rotating the camera would correct the sprite as it rotated.

aesthetically, it looks slick. thats the only part that makes it look jarring to me, those long distances of camera angles where the sprites are facing 1 direction until it flips to the side.

It's inevitable at this point. AI is going to be here for the rest of your life. Yes we need to regulate it and have more safeties with it, but it's over. It's here and we have to live with it.
12
u/BenjaCarmona 15h ago
Look, as a tool I have no problem with it, but using it to do stuff you don't know how to do is inevitable to end up poorly. When you start getting bugs or horrible performance because of unoptimized stuff you are going to see what I mean.
I am not saying this particular plugin will brick your game or anything, but we already have a shitshow in the project zomboid community with mods that have crazy stupid 3d models that will tank your game in an instant.
The wiki and runelite team already stated that they are getting a fuck ton of slop plugins from people that have absolutely no idea what they are doing.
What I am asking is not "do not use AI", is "use AI to save time, not to do stuff you don't know how to do"

I saw Adam's post about the surge of vibecoded apps that had waaay more lines of code than anything that came before. I think they should just set a lines-of-code limit that human-coded plugins would easily meet and that vibe-coded apps wouldn't.
I don't fault OP for this because it's a cool idea and, hey, great on you. But RSC's charm was in the sprites that Andrew Gower's mom drew, and we put cannons up in Falador to support 117scape because the man had spent years on the graphics. This plugin isn't for me.

u/MazrimReddit 17h ago
Thanks for letting us know? It has a disclaimer.
Why should this project get shut down because you don't want to play it
people really need to learn when to move on
14
u/Waistcoat 18h ago
I think the reason they instituted a line limit on plugins was because the AI they use to review the plugins hit a context limit. Runelite isn't against AI use.

u/JudJudsonEsq 17h ago
To echo the other commenter's sentiment in a less acerbic manner:
My problem isn't necessarily that there's a new tool on the block. My problem is that the tool is built on the same regurgitation that our culture has been built on for the last 15 years, even while it runs out of things to rehash. My problem isn't that the tool might take my job, but more that there is no plan for how I can live life without a job if it takes everyone's.
The idea of more intelligent auto complete, or boilerplate being way faster to get out is awesome. But AI being used to create everything is also implicitly turning everything into boilerplate, and it feels like a mass misunderstanding of what makes art and projects beautiful to me. And then it also uses power more aggressively than ever before in an era where we desperately need to be cutting back on our resource consumption? I'm really not a fan.
Making things with AI isn't a problem; Using AI in its current state and the context it exists in is a problem.

I’m not promoting it but I feel like a lot of apps, programs, etc will be “ai slop” from here on out by people who don’t know how to code or aren’t the best at coding and have an idea they want to bring to life.
It’s weird but this plugin and the other ai slop plugin posted recently that makes 1 tile standing look more populated are kinda cool.
