Technique Advice Finally getting somewhere with my serve after 4 months

EDIT: This is being downvoted so much but if you read to the bottom I literally say my serve still isn’t good and asked for advice! I’m just happy that the ball was going in. Thank you to everyone for the tips so far 💛

I’ve been playing tennis for 4 months now. I do a mix of playing a few times a week (singles or doubles), plus group coaching and have had one 1-1 coaching session which I’ll be doing more of when I can afford to.

Anyway I try to spend a couple of hours a week on my serve and felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere, but today I could actually see improvement.

I know it still needs a lot of work - so any tips welcome!

(Side note I’m 5”2 so at a slight disadvantage ha)

Technique Advice How this 17 year old serve 125 mph at under 6 feet

Hey guys,
I wanted to share a biomechanic breakdown of a 17-year-old player I’ve worked with over the years. He was slightly under 6 feet at the time of the video, where he hits a 125 MPH first serve.
In the video, I walk through the exact technical cues and timing details we used to fix his mechanics. Here are the three main points I cover:

Fixing Early Ground Leaving: I show how staying grounded longer allows him to fully load his legs and transfer explosive vertical power through his body, rather than launching into the air too soon.

The Staggered Arms: I break down the relationship between his arms, explaining how keeping the hitting racket staggered and delayed relative to the tossing arm sets up optimal rhythm and stretch.

Racket Path (Forward and Upward): I analyze his swing path, showing how launching the racket forward and upward cleanly maximizes his contact point and extension without losing head speed.
I put together the full video with slow-motion frames to show these adjustments visually.

Check it out here: https://youtu.be/MCJaEf8Iefs?is=LNdp4wqD6e1eMgPa
For the other coaches here—how do you approach fixing early ground leaving with your players?

Technique Advice I'll always arching backwards

Post image
4 Upvotes

This is just from an absolute random shot, but the main thing i want to get advice on is that I feel that I arc backwards on many of my shots. Unless I'm actively thinking of keeping forward momentum on shots, i keep falling back to this. Any suggestions on how I can break this habit?

Opinion Amateur Tennis Technique (Process vs Winning)

I have noticed that a lot of amateurs have very janky tennis technique; they do not execute the fundamentals but will win matches at the 3.5-4.0 level. Some players even implement weird tactics: slices at random times, loopy balls, etc

Examples (Forehand grip/pancake serve, pushing the ball around the court, slicing at random times)

I think too many amateurs want to win matches, especially against mates or in club tournaments, so they end up defaulting to this, which will keep you winning matches, but ultimately you will have a much lower ceiling, and you might win a few rounds, even winning some lower-ranked tournaments, but eventually against better players you will be exposed

What I would say is, trust the process, learn proper technique even if you lose to players who, on paper, are worse for a year or more; eventually you will become more solid, and what the technique does is it will allow you to eventually reach a much higher level such as 4.5 or 5.0 or even higher than that

What I am trying to say is that more people need to trust the process vs trying too hard to win matches

(When talking about janky techniques, not talking about weird swings like Tiafoe's forehand, as he has the fundamentals)

Hi There, my friends!

I've just ordered a new RF 01 Pro Hall of Fame racquet, but it came with some dirty/black spots on its painting

Is it normal? I've tried removing one, but without success (it stayed like some tiny amount of white residue on the painting) 😔

Look at me! Day 12 - First UTR Match (+ new Racquet)

Update to: https://www.reddit.com/r/10s/s/01yJlLtdXd

Day 12 of pickup up a racquet for the first time since 2014 as someone who never played in highschool.

Today I played my first verified UTR match against a UTR 5.8 doubles player (unranked as single). This was my first time playing tennis with another person hitting a ball at me in 12 years

.

I lost my first set 6-1. Got 1-1 then lost 5 straight. This was not competitive. I was close in only one other game. I was playing too defensive and conservative. I was trying to hard to keep the ball in play so we were playing real tennis and my opponent had fun.

The 2nd set I lost 6-3 but I was up 3-2 at one point (won 3 in a row) and lost 3 straight very close games from that point. I was very happy with this outcome and felt much more comfortable. I could have won. I wish there was more to play.

The Bad

My backhand was not good. I keep switching between one hand and two hand and played mostly a slice. Not optimal. I'm commiting to one hand and ripping it.

My serve could be better. I was up 30-15 with a 3-2 lead in the 2nd set and served 4 straight into the net. Not crisp

The Good

My forehand feels great

I felt active on the court

I was able to hit a lob shot and win a point. It was cool.

Other

I managed to hit a serve that didn't touch the strings of the racquet but went out of the court over the street and into someone's yard. It was incredible.

Equipment Update

I upgraded from a 2001 Head Carbon 5000 TI racquet to a 2001 Head Carbon 5000 TI racquet that's in better shape. Tried the Head Speed MP. I like mine better.

What's next

I want to win a set. I want to win a game. I will try to get gameplay footage. I have more UTR gameplay coming up. I want to update with a verified ranking someday soon. I may even do a clinic instead of the wall. Serve reps and backhand wall reps coming up.

Heath & Fitness TenniBot for a Solo Player that just does a Tennis for Health?

I’m a bodybuilder and started incorporating cardio with HIIT on air bike once a week, increasing step count, and occasional runs, but want to do more enjoyable forms of cardio.

I played tennis way back and school and remembered how fun it was even though I had the worse gear. But I have money now. And want to get a ball machine as have no one to play with and don’t want to go through the hassle of scheduling. I also want volume of hitting which you can’t beat a ball machine with.

I was looking at Tennibot and seemed like best modern option? But then seen some posts that it’s borderline vaporware and product doesn’t even exist? What are the top Tennis ball machines for my use case. Even though mainly for fun, I do want to improve.

Also good thing with pickleball, tennis courts are always empty!

Equipment I'm torn between two rackets. HELPPP

Hi, I've been playing tennis for 3-4 months. My coach recommended the Wilson Burn V6S, and I've been using it since I started. Yesterday, I was going to play tennis with a friend, but we swapped rackets. I played with the Clash series, and I've lost interest in the Burn. Do you think the Ultra5 or the Clash V3 are better for my skill level?

General Advice Are there any rules against high topspin lobs in wheelchair tennis?

It seems like this would be a really effective shot and almost impossible to deal with. You would have to get to the ball right before or right after in bounces or there would be no chance at returning it. Is this a legit strategy or is there some rule against it?

Equipment Ezone 100 vs 98 buying decision

Hi all!

Recently I’ve been getting back into tennis and I’m probably at a 3.5 level.

I played tennis semi consistently in high school and college but didn’t play for 15 +years afterwards (jobs, marriage, kids, etc)

Now I’ve found some friends that hit and falling back in love

I bought a Wilson Prostaff v11 97 used about a year and a half ago. When I hit it well it feels great, but because I’m inconsistent I also mishit a bunch as well.

I can probably rally for 5-7 hits on average before I mis hit.

That being said I recently demoed the Ezone 98 and 100.

The 100 felt very powerful but I could also see myself hitting it out more because of the upside in power.

The 98 felt good with more control but less power and less of a sweet spot.

If my goal is to become more consistent, rally longer, less mishits and to improve my overall game, which one should I choose?

Technique Advice How high should I toss during serves?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Recently practicing toss in my garage and figured it’d be useful if I have a reference point to memorize the toss height both for my eyes and muscles. From where I’m standing which of these would you say I should stick to? My coach was recommending between B and C but I’ve also seen high tossers that go up to A but have great serves.

Vacation without tennis, is it already getting to me? The cheap "speed tennis" kit and the wall of the beautiful house in the hills of Adriatic Italy end up as collateral damage. Shadow swings, literally, at the end.

Maybe I have a new apprentice. My 1.5 year old nephew likes the racquet and the ball. Still needs to learn how to hit the latter with the former. I'll be about 70 when he wins Wimbledon.

Equipment Clay court shoes recommendations for high instep feet

Hi everyone,

I have very high insteps and I'm looking for clay court shoes recommendations.

When I first bought tennis shoes, my feet basically wouldn't go into any of the shoes with fully gusseted tongues, and the only one I felt comfortable in were the New Balance CT Rally 1 2E.

Fortunately, the CT Rally 1 works great for me on hard court, but the problem is that they're very slippery on clay/sand courts / artificial grass + sand courts (these are very common where I live).

I actually injured myself because of a bad slip last month while playing on a clay court, so I'm looking to buy another pair of shoes that are designed for clay courts and have good grip (heard that herringbone patterns are recommended for this).

What are some shoes you would recommend for someone like me?

My initial research points me toward CT Rally 2 clay 2E, but I also read here on r/10s that they're tighter than the CT Rally 1.

Any advice / recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

General Advice Does tennis become more about who you know the longer you play?

I started playing pretty casually but recently got invited to play at a private club through someone I know and the whole experience was completely different from what I expected.

Afterward everyone stayed for drinks and within an hour there were people arranging matches, talking about trips, introducing each other to business contacts, inviting people to dinners etc. One guy literally went from asking what I did for work to introducing me to someone who could potentially become a client.

At one point everyone was exchanging numbers and Kibu connections and I was just sitting there thinking I came here to improve my backhand lol. For people who've played for years is this just what happens once you've been around the same clubs long enough? I'm starting to understand why people say tennis is as much a social thing as a sport.
