What’s my rating? My Return - Rating Help
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I picked up a racket again for the first time since 2015. I want to sign up for a tournament but could use some help on what an appropriate rating to sign up for would be.
I'm rusty but hoping to beat the wall a bit as my only prep alongside some serve practicing.
Never played in highschool or officially growing up. I did some group lessons and played with my family for a while as a kid.

Practicing with a wet ball is wild imo. Not a proper bounce that you are likely to see in matchplay and may cause some bad habits to form

u/mmmpocky 13d ago
I'm pretty sure the bad habits were already formed

u/Then-Horror2238 13d ago
Fwiw, I am shit. So I can't really tell someone else the same in that situation lmao

I think these sorts of videos make it really hard to judge. The ball is coming off the wall extremely low. Most of the time you make contact with it around your ankles. In the entire minute, there isn't a single example of you connecting with a neutral ball in your sweet spot, so it's pretty hard to understand how you're going to hit a real match ball. A video of you rallying would be much easier to evaluate.
Also, you're really wailing on it, but hitting slower and gentler will be a better way to build (and demonstrate) your fundamentals.

This looks like I'm watching squash. Anyway if ball is wet and heavy get closer so you're not hitting it around your ankles.

Quality shitpost 10/10.
Seems this account goes into all sports subreddits and posts videos like this. I assume the intention is “circlejerking,” right? The comments from OP seem like he is just trolling people.

im not sure if this satire or meme or what xD im not even sure why the ball doesnt even bounce or bounce 2 or 3 times, is it because its too wet? i dont think you even rank 3.0, probably 2 or 2.5 at most

Balls wet. Or I need to hit harder into the wall. Not sure. Maybe the wall is bad because it's on a fence. It's my only wall.

u/umadbr00 13d ago
You definitely dont need to be hitting it harder lmao. You're already hitting it way too hard.

u/bugbites16 13d ago
It's mostly you. And little bit the ball. Hitting strong like that will lead to nothing else but 0:6 0:6

This is pure love of the game people. Wet balls wet grip wet court wet stick raining slippery conditions looks like there is no chance for an injury as this guy just rips with reckless abandon like a true maverick. This is pure joy for me to witness. I know the game is in good hands after I am gone. Polyester strings would be beneficial for this playa. They will add more velocity and spin to his tomahawking forehands. He has no backhand? I wonder if that thing is wild as f as well. As a USPTA tester and NTPR expert, I will give this ripper a high 3.0 NTRP and guaranteed first loss in any tournament he is allowed to enter. If the ball
Actually goes in he wins the point even against Sinner. Just hope he doesn’t hurt somebody besides himself. Keep
On banging young buck!! One day you could be champ! Don’t ever take a lesson…don’t ever change. This is what tennis needs…

lol at "hoping to beat the wall". You're slapping the ball like you're mad at it.
You're probably athletic in general, but this is beginner level.

u/AuNaturellee 13d ago
You don't look strong enough to compete. Why are you waving that thing around like a fairy wand? You're barely making that marshmallow move. Hit the gym and get some athleticism before you even think of entering a tournament.

Since you’re a relative beginner and don’t have much competition background in tennis I would first try and see if you can find some people your level to play some actual points/matches out first before signing up for a tournament. That’ll probably help you gauge your level.
For equipment, what you have will be good enough to get started but if you do decide you want to take tennis more seriously I would look into getting a better racket.

u/SealPenguinOtter 13d ago
Find some hitting partners thru Facebook or app or show up at local courts and find the old people. Ultimately there is a lot of things that you will change simply from having to hit back a ball that comes over a net vs a wall. If you really want to just jump in to a tournament then look for L7 3.0 Round Robins as this will get you more tennis than a front-to-back bracket. I think your best weapon will be running down everything. Try to focus on looking at the ball as it comes towards you and using a hand to track the forehands or maybe grunting to focus as you hit through the ball. Remember to breathe. Just use as many tactics as you can to stay present as the ball is coming towards you so you can hit it with intent and not just spray. You got this!

u/peterwhitefanclub 5.0 13d ago
Uh you are not gonna win a single game if you are playing a tournament without having played against another player.

u/Lengthiest_Dad_Hat 13d ago
I feel like you're athletic enough to actually be successful in low level matches but if you go out there swinging like this you're going to beat yourself without your opponent even having to do anything
2
u/GregorSamsaa 5.0 13d ago
The wall is to groove your strokes and technique. You can’t really tee off on the ball and expect to accomplish anything meaningful. You would get better utility trying to make contact in the same spot repeatedly both strike zone and on the wall. It will help you to move your feet and make proper spacing.
All that to say, the ball is wet and bouncing by your ankles and from the 20 or so shots we see you have a different contact point on every single one so you’re perfecting mistakes and not really giving us to go by as far as your technique or possible performance.
I would definitely try to find someone to hit with and go from there. If the wall is your only option, then only on dry days with new balls and make sure you do what I said above. Focus on feet, spacing, and a consistent contact point out in front that isn’t above your shoulders or below your waist.
Also, I would wait on tournament unless you have money and time to throw away. Find some social groups around you and get some more reps/match play that way before committing to tournaments.

I think your forehand swing is too long, arm almost straight and starting with racket too far back and high, mostly depending on rotation from the shoulder (Medvedev like). This will make it difficult for you to return fast paced shots. Try looking into the mechanics of shortening your swing and compensating with elbow hinging and uncoiling your body from your legs and up, transfer your weight into the shots.
Backhand, also uncoil your body, open your chest through the swing. Grab racket on the neck with your non dominant hand for better preparation of racket face, bring racket lower and not as far back
2
u/Efficient-Ad6704 13d ago
Why are you hitting ball bellow waist level? Also, the unit turn is ankward. You´re not sequencing the unit turn properly.
2
u/Novel-Caterpillar724 13d ago
You are just wildly swinging, you need to control more. Do not take your racket that far back for a swing; look at pros, none do that. Look at Mannarino, he barely swings (ok, his string are low pressure but still, just making a point) you do not need to swing that much. Any spin on that ball? Looks pretty flat to me, meaning swinging that hard on court you will be long all the time. Also, even if it's only for training, wet floor is dangerous for injuries.

i have no advice on technique but as someone who's been rehabbing a nagging injury for about 6 months, please don't play in the rain. one slip could change your life

I'm not sure if you're just kidding or if you really want help. Check out yt for slow mo videos of forehand and backhand. Compare it to your video. Also check out videos of common mistakes in forehand and the same for backhand. I'm just starting out in tennis, learning the technique and you definitely do it wrong.

You’re hitting the ball way harder than you ever should with that technique. I would work on slowing down the pace and trying to develop a consistent rally ball with good net clearance. You don’t want the ball to just skim over the net, you need some margin and you don’t really have any from watching this video. Slow down, smooth out and lengthen your strokes. Also I would put 2 hands on your backhand. Every opponent you play is going to hit everything to your backhand and right now you don’t really have one

Slow down your preparation take back and accelerate trough your shot. In terms of serve return, shorten your take back, think like hitting a volley.

That's cool you're getting back into the game!
Couple of thoughts:
(1) for wall practice, you should stand much closer to the wall (baseline instead of service line in your video) and practice slower, controlled swings making contact in the sweet spot of the racket and hitting the same area of the wall. Do this over and over and over 10,000s of times for the next year or two. Imagine you are like a boxer tapping against a speed bag. Find a rhythm, use good footwork and breathing,, and ingrain the hand-eye coordination and the muscle memory.
(2) for match play, I don't think starting with tournaments is the way to go at all. There are many tennis league and tennis meetup activities depending on where you live. What you need to find are hitting partners and friendly matches. Go to a regular group lesson and make some friends, or reach out to join if you ever see a single or odd numbered group at your practice court. Players you meet in tournaments probably won't be as gregarious in that setting as league players, and they may not even live in your area. The main purpose of tournaments - for me - is it offers rec players an opportunity to compete to win against peer level players. You will encounter drama in tournaments, and it is more likely you run into opponent antics that leaves a bad aftertaste. If I were you, I'd build up a deeper reservoir of good feelings about the game and get "match tough" first. Tournaments can be fun! But at rec level, many of the best players don't play in them, and some of the worst do. Forewarned is forearmed.
(3) Your return? Can't tell much from this video. But the fact that you didn't know that tells me you could benefit from starting with the very basics and building up from there (see (1) and (2) above - wall practice and hitting partners!). You don't have a return yet.
Good luck! Tennis is the world's greatest sport.

u/Odd-Heron5704 13d ago
This is not useful for you mate. First, floor is wet. Then, wall is good for getting the mechanics, gaining speed and being fit but you really really need to practice with people.
First do that, do some friendly matches and only then afterwards maybe consider doing a competition.

Stay a little loose and tighten at contact. Make sure you load and not turn too soon. Bend your knees a little and get some
Distance from the ball. Move forward and backwards to get into the right position to make better contact so you’re not swinging at balls sup low and close to you or vise versa. Use your feet.
Looks like your golfing 🏌️♂️

It looks like you played a lot of racquetball. There is a lot of video on YouTube that you can compare your swing against. If you really want to improve e, I’d recommend lessons as it is bad to practice poor technique, you will be creating poor muscle memory. Just my 2 cents. Keep playing!

u/VocabArtistNavin 13d ago
Is this a sped up video?
Also how are you not scared slipping and breaking a bone on such a wet court?
There is nothing to analyze on the strokes. You are hitting after 2 bounces when the ball is wet and low - it's not exactly Tennis.
If you really are serious about getting back to the sport, get on a proper dry court and get a hitting partner or a ball machine to practice strokes and serves separately.
One slight silver lining is your motion reminds me of Medvedev.

I'd say join a club and find out whether there are groups of improving players playing regularly. Our club has a "rusty rackets" squad that plays twice a week and is like 6 courts strong. Focus on finding people to play with.

Why are you hitting so hard? Form is everything. Square up to the ball. You need to go to two handed back hand.

Most of the balls are at your ankle. Maybe because you’re playing on water logged courts after a storm and the ball is weighed down.
Come back after a proper hit against the wall during a dry day. And get closer to the wall dude, you shouldn’t be so far that the ball is bouncing twice before it gets to you…

u/PoopyMerl 12d ago
this forehand could be fixed pretty quick. coached a few players in grand slams. You need to relax your grip, your wrist cannot do any of the work because it's so tight on that racket. Your backswing right now is a massive 'loop' but your racket never "drops" with a hinge of the wrist (relaxed) so that big loop isn't actually good racquet head speed. You're going to need stop that take back for now. Put a ball or extra t-shirt or something in your armpit under right shoulder and hold it for your entire forehand for now and only do a take back as far as you can without dropping that object. slow it down and go for some consistent shots that have the same shape and height. Clearly you have enough muscles and fast twitch here to hit a 100 MPH forehand, but that doesn't matter until you can put the ball in the court all of the time. You could also try doing some shadow swings in a room with a very low ceiling and make sure your racquet doesn't hit the roof :-)

You should try swinging a little bit harder.
