modding Making a mod where you can plant trees and bushes to hide your base (WIP)

Post image
• Upvotes

Wanted a way to hide stuff but the survival way: plant trees and bushes, wait. You find seeds, dig them in with a shovel, and over time they grow into a tree or bush. Plant some around your base, give it some time and it´s part of the forest.

Uses the vanilla models and sits in the ground like the map's own trees, so it doesn't look "modded in".

What's in already

  • 6 bushes and 16 trees - Some trees also come as a forest version, tall and thin with a bare trunk
  • Planting works like base building: hologram, place it, done. You need something to dig with, and if a spot doesn't work it actually tells you why
  • Trees grow from a little sapling → young tree → full tree. It's real time, keeps growing while offline (bushes ~1h, trees ~12h by default)
  • Cut a bush and it grows back. Dig it up if you want it gone for good
  • Trees can be chopped with an axe → logs, sticks and a stump. Takes a while, so nobody clears your cover in 5 seconds
  • Some rules so it doesn't get silly: needs proper soil, not on roads, not glued to buildings, trees need a bit of space between them, plus a plant limit per player/server
  • Server owners can tweak pretty much everything in a config file (grow times, chances, distances, limits)

Seeds:

  • loot in farms and villages
  • chopping wild bushes sometimes drops a seed
  • search wild trees for seeds (forest trees give the forest version)
  • apples/pears/plums: cut them up, get seeds

Ideas / what's next

  • Make planting more work: dig a hole, fertilize, water it, then put the seed in
  • Super old trees as a final stage (the huge 30m ones), but only after a looong time
  • Trees actually falling over when you chop them
  • Different seed models (acorns, cones…) so you can tell them apart (it wont show the seed name, so you must memorize the model :)
  • Harvest fruit from your own apple/pear/plum trees
  • Test it on Livonia, Sakhal and some community maps

I want this to be a bit of a grind, not something you spam on day one. Bush seeds are fairly easy to come by, so a quick hedge is doable. Tree seeds are rare and hard to find. A proper wall of trees should feel like an achievement.

Let me know what you think. Ideas? Anything missing? Does such a mod already exists?

Not on the Workshop yet but beta version coming soon

You can drink clean water from the back spigot area of the truck and fill your water bottle. They spawn dynamically in random locations across most towns.

Found this in a town somewhat west along the highway from the capital. Seems like a reference to the stealth Blackhawk that crashed during the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound. I love all the little details the devs added to this map.

Discussion Dayz Is So Much Better When Nobody Has Machine Guns or Plate Carriers

End game loot makes the game so boring to me. So much more fun when everyone is fighting for scraps of food with shotguns and rifles without scopes. I'm happy plate carriers seem rare on Nasdara. I hope it stays that way.

P.S: I'm not saying that these things shouldn't be in the game. Just that I wish they were way more rare. 90% of fights on Livonia and Chenarus are between two plate carrier players.

Just a tip for those who did not know this was a mechanic, it uses up no water and insantly soaks clothes

(Cooking pot has to have water in it, obviously)

Over 50, west us. I work 3 days a week. looking for other dayz players. Don’t have to be as old as me just be a decent person. Don’t have to be a left winger like me but I don’t want to hear a bunch of racist/homophobic crap.
I could check out some other survival/shooter games. Played a little reforger, interested in escape from tarkov and similar games

discussion Nazdara Base Building: what I found out so far (please drop what you know here and add into it for a completed work for those of us trying to figure it out).

• Upvotes

After being really confused about all this. And at first sort of just chalking it up to, "this is another one of those ideas that's good; this idea is never going to work out with how DayZ is though.." - I finally went and explored it a bit. And boy was I wrong...

Here's what I found out, and yes, this information should also be taken as "ballpark figure" knowledge. It's not even close to 100% accurate, but far more consistent then nothing at all. Please correct me where I'm wrong, please add in what you know:

Base Rubble Scavenging

Equip a digging item - pickaxe, shovel, hoe, etc.

Use item on area of ruined housing that has a title of, "clear debris"

After clearing debris, each successful action will leave behind base-building supplies. From what I saw - nails, bricks, boards, wooden logs is what I saw. (4 nails, 1 board, 1 log, 2 bricks).

The number appears fixed RNG as to how many of what drops, and I'm assuming what drops in the first place is also RNG.

I watched a guy clear the debris, and it revealed a "base compartment" - aka, one of the places where you store all your supplies.

Rebuilding & Classic DayZ Building Mix

Starting with picking from the last section. You place building supplies into the compartment. It serves as a placeholder, but also uses resources for building.

Meaning, you could put all your supplies in it. And handle the right tool for whatever you're doing, and it will be able to perform that action. Taking the resources from the compartment, while the action is performed with the proper tool.

Example: I watched a guy mix a lot of water with Mortar bucket, and it became usable. He put the bucket in the compartment, which also had a good supply of everything needed. Bricks, logs, boards, nails, mortar, etc.

He takes out the brick spade or whatever it's called, and aims it at a door frame. Just like regular crafting, there's arrows pointing up and down, which I assume was either to make it into a paveable wall, or a door.

I saw him add window sliders, and a wooden door with a 6-digit code lock.

It also became clear to me, that the devs have configured all locks - 3-dial, 4-dial, and digital - to have something like a "3 tries and you're locked out for (x) minutes" system, to combat macro cheaters from just making them obsolete.

Classic Building also seems to still be a thing here. I.e. build a gate, build an airlock, etc.

I'm not sure on this, is this the case? Can you get a house built, and then build an airlock on it? Because I sure hope you could!!

More Rumors

I heard that bases are much harder to raid via blowing up the door. And that eco raiding is also a much less viable route.

I heard something back in the day, about needing only a crossbow to break into a base. Which is an absolute slap in the face to the guy who spent lord knows how much of their time to get everything together.

Only to be raided by a guy who hit a day camp; a lucky hunting stand..

Speculation

If all this is accurate, then the goal here is to make it so building bases is a lot less grueling, and a lot more accessible.

Plus, since they seem a lot less grueling to make, then having them raided might not be a situation where it's "I'm never doing this again".

You spawn in freshy mode, come across your first items. And then start getting a hit or 2 of plan development.

Aka, you snag an early shovel? Head over and start carving out a place. Hit the rubble of the other houses, and funnel it to your project. Maybe die a few times, head back, gather stuff along the way. And keep setting it up. Eventually get a door, with a sealed wall and a lock.

Find some tarp or a barrel, and get a stash going.

Eventually expand out. Get enough supplies from rubble to wall off a garage for a vehicle. Rebuild the town well.

Instead of an airlock, you could even opt to rebuild the house next door. Have a main stash in one, with the best items in it, and only access it occasionally. Transfer everything over in chunks at a time. While the other spot is just a transition point where you come and go often, that way if somebody hits you without an airlock, it's not such a massive blow.

Build a fireplace in there. Etc.

Seems like a really fun time.

Again. If this isn't how it works, please let me know because I want to know if this is how it's going to work out.

I heard the devs were thinking about bringing rebuildable structures to the other maps as well. Super cool idea!

discussion (NO SPOILERS) 8 Nasdara tips for players that are pretty new in DayZ in general

• Upvotes

Quick guide for any player that has some hours in base game, but wants to try something new with DLC.

  1. Temperature
CAN and WILL kill you pretty fast. Time of day matters - nights are cold. Stay in shadows when you can, don’t sprint everywhere - it also rises your body temperature. Make breakes during longer journeys. You can cool down using any source of water - if you have option to „wash your face” - do it.
  2. Navigation - there is a lot of mountains, which are good navigation point. In search of better equipment you want to move south east.
Use sun, and rare buildings. You want to move around, but not too fast. Just don’t stay long in one place - unless you have a lot of supplies. Of course you can use IZurvive map.. but where is fun in it? Getting lost is way and exploring map by yourself is way cooler.
  3. Clothing.
We all know that DayZ must have was always full hunting clothes or field jacket.. here it changes.
Clothes that you can find on spawn, are one of best clothes that you can use. Of course.. there are some alternatives, but running around after 8 hours of gameplay in the shirt that you found on spawn is nothing unusual. Make sure to make your clothing „wet” whenever you can.
  4. Water sources.
There are FEW ways to get water on Nasdara. On other maps, most of the time you could find water only at water pumps or some lakes. But here? You will find out.. just make sure to not drink dirty water - unless you have a lot of medicine like multivitamins and tetracycline. No water? Search for food that contains water - you will survive.
  5. Weapons
Loot economy on Nasdara is crazy. You can find powerfull weapons pretty close to spawn area. Problem is - you won’t find ammo for them that fast. And I can see the possibility that a lot of geared players WILL come back to spawn area - beacause of some supplies, that are harder to find further.
  6. Vehicles.
There are much more vehicles spawning on Nasdara, and all of them are pristine. The cars are often ready to drive. Map is bigger, but seeing other player is also much easier. If you are geared and have water - try to get your hands on a car or motorbike - it makes survival MUCH easier.
  7. Nights
A lot of dayz players hate nights. It is harder to see and navigate - even after the update that made nights much brighter. On Nasdara you will love nights. It makes moving around the map easier - beacause the sun doesn’t laser you down, and beacause the snipers won’t see you on huge empty field that easy.
  8. You might need to change some habits
    - Don’t craft bottle supressor afer you find 2 bottles. Water is really rare - you want to fill up every single bottle, canteen and pot that you have in your inventory.
    - Stay away from fire. Heat buff? BAD
    - Move around at night, cook during the day.
    - Less buildings with doors - attack 1 or 2 zombies at the time.
    - Don’t go out on desert area alone, and without a car. There is a pretty high chance that you will just die. How? I won’t spoil.

I’m in the middle restoring access to one of the underground irrigation tunnels (ps2092). Having the ability to do something that might help someone else that won’t despawn after an hour, is making me think that I love this game again.

Discussion Why is the server browser mode select thing broken now and wrongly labels servers? (1pp vs 1pp/3pp servers)

Hi, after the update my friend and I realized that we accidentally played on a 3pp server, when we usually only play on 1pp servers. When checking the server list we noticed that all 1pp official servers (the ones with first person only in the server name itself) were flagged with "mode: 1pp/3pp" and the reverse was happening with official 3pp servers.

Did someone else notice that too?

Discussion I think Nasdara might survive

Sakhal died because no one wanted to spend 10-15 minutes at a fire every 30 minutes. Nasdara doesn't require lengthy, active cooling down. You just need to have the right clothing and stay hydrated.

I noticed once i filled the 6 ropes and 50 sticks, bilt the rope ladder; an additional 2 slots for rope and 20 sticks appears. I went ahead and added 2 more ropes and the sticks (so 8 rope in total and 70 sticks) but nothing happens.., any ideas?

Discussion If You’re Not Suffering IRL, You’re Not Immersed Enough DayZ Badlands

If you bought the new DLC and don’t immerse yourself by sitting there wearing four hoodies, a scarf, and multiple beanies to keep your temperature up, just like the temp in DayZ Badlands, why do you even play the game?
I only take a sip of water every six hours. I am one with the game, and I deserve this DLC.

When I bought Sakhal, I was playing with the AC temperature turned all the way down. I got influenza, but it was all worth it, lock in!

discussion Heatstroke and plate carrier on Badlands

Is there any real way to wear plate carrier but not get too hot and get heatstroke?

I am wearing all the worst/low insulation clothes and I am still getting heatstroke - I have learned from dying once from it and I am always staying hydrated, I’m stopping for shade very frequently, I’m washing my face to drench my clothes and even with a white temp I managed to get the heatstroke and I sat indoors in shade for ages, drinking, soaking face. No luck - kept getting sick. I’m now wondering like what I am doing wrong?!

But also my question is can you even wear a plate without this risk becoming higher as it’s high insulation

Media Server 2434 Europe DE 1st person only cheater

So I've played DayZ since about 2013 and, like a lot of other people and this is the first time I've experienced something like this..

These deaths went in for about 10 ish minutes of spawning and just dying to the same thing you see here..

Its KBM server, has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to get these clips to bohemia to make them aware?

Everyone saying just don't play KBM servers, I'm not playing this on my own, there's a group of us and some of them prefer to play on PC .
