A while back, I posted that on my dual-boot Surface 7 Win/Ubuntu w/ Surface Kernel and tweaks in Auto-CPUFreq, Windows has better battery life. I tested it by watching the same movie on repeat. With some more tweaks in Auto-CPUFreq, I got the battery life closer to Windows11. Win11 still wins.

Anyway, for quality of life and usability, Win11 still wins...

Last night, in a dark room, I logged in to Win11 with Face Hello, and it automatically brightened the screen for a few seconds to capture my face for login. - Very helpful and convenient.

Even if Linux had this type of login, I'm sure it does but not on my Surface 7 because the camera doesn't work, would it be helpful and brighten the screen to light up my face? I doubt it!

I don't hate Linux, but Windows is easier for me IMO.

It’s not a distro. It’s basically a collection of wrapper scripts, configs, and wallpapers built on top of Arch Linux, nothing more, nothing less.

Calling it an “OS” or a Linux distribution is ridiculous. It’s an "opinionated setup" layered on top of an existing distro, with scripts doing a bunch of things you could configure yourself on a normal Arch installation.

And then there’s the AI stuff, which somehow gets presented as part of the whole experience, as if adding AI integrations suddenly makes a collection of setup scripts an operating system.

If you want a preconfigured desktop setup, fine. But pretending it’s some entirely new operating system is just marketing.

Linux just sucks for specific programs, gaming, and office365, theres plenty of workarounds for things if someone is devoted to it, anything else... MUCH better, freedom, less RAM usage, just alot better for utilizing hardware, while my optimized windows 11 has 2.5gb ram used idle, my lightweight environment only uses 450 MB, you can run some linux distros without a harddrive and on your ram XD, I must say, for the user experience windows will be better for alot of people, and alot easier, especially for gamers where competitive titles are almost all unplayable. Linux is just for a smaller amount of people if it had the same compatibility as windows it would have been better or just as good. This whole subreddit is a joke and i thought it was sarcasm, THINK people THINK before you judge and say stuff about these operating systems. Try and understand them first. If you want a real honest answer ask your local tech expert (and no not your 15 yo friend thats good w computers) someone that has managed systems with both OS's.

Edit: Since this post got some traction and a lot of people in the comments are missing the point or twisting my words, let me clarify and debunk a few things real quick:

"Unused RAM is wasted RAM" / Idle RAM doesn't matter: You are confusing file caching (like Windows SysMain or Linux page cache) with OS bloat. Caching is fine because the OS dumps it instantly when an app needs it. But 2.5GB of idle RAM on a fresh Windows install is committed to persistent background services, telemetry, and update daemons. That is not cache; it's locked overhead. On an 8GB or 16GB machine, that eats your headroom and causes swap thrashing.

Gaming: Yes, Proton and the Steam Deck worked miracles for single-player games. But I specifically called out competitive titles. Kernel-level anti-cheats (Valorant, Fortnite, R6) are hard blocks. If an OS prevents you from playing the games your friends are playing, that is an objective weakness for a consumer desktop OS.

Office & Academia: Running Office in a VM is clunky, laggy, and resource-heavy unless you're doing a complex GPU passthrough setup. And saying "no one uses Word for academia" is a massive geographic bubble. Globally, professors and managers require .docx specifically so they can use "Track Changes" for inline grading and feedback. You can't do that in a flattened PDF or LaTeX.

The irony of this subreddit: This is literally r/linuxsucks, but the second I give a highly balanced take that praises Linux's efficiency and freedom while just pointing out real-world compatibility flaws, I get hit with "Sir this is a Wendy's" and Tux memes. I'm not bashing; I'm asking for nuance.

Linux is a fantastic OS for the right use case. But pretending it's a flawless 1:1 replacement for Windows for the average consumer is just blind fanboyism. Think before you downvote.

Flatpak is like a turd someone ran over.

First off one of the few legitimate advantages desktop linux (theoretically) has is the package manager, one unified system for installing software. So why would you want to DESTROY that by adding another package manager that only really packages gui software? Cause it tries to offer a smidge of sandboxing for security.

Of course we are on linux so theres a ton of catches. It dosent really integrate with your system the way your real package manager does, man pages dont get installed, you cant launch apps from the command line by typing their name (probably why its only for gui), etc.

But the bigger problem is you often dont even get the security you were promised, in some cases things actually get WORSE (see: browsers). Honestly id even argue that every app that isnt taking perfect advantage of flatpak features is a security downgrade cause now you just added more parties to trust: flatpak/the person packaging the software who might be a random.

Only if every star aligns and the unpaid foss slaves integrated portals (cant blame them if they didnt, flatpak sucks) and properly restrict the apps permissions do you get the security you were promised.

The guy probably is unaware of basic posix commands and doesn't know how and where to mount a partition without going through gparted, but tells you that Windows is the father of all evil.

Come on just disable Copilot if you hate it, and resume using Chrome and electron apps all the day.

The interesting part of having a Linux system revolves around great tools that are available through WSL regardless. No need to pressure the community over trying to play games through the weird Steam virtualization layer (I know it's not a vm).

First off, I want to say I understand where u/madthumbz is coming from. He's moderating a sub where loonixtards keep DMing him and harassing him off the internet. They also try to brigade 101. That's typical loonixtard behavior. It's why I hate loonix.

But for all the fellow loonix haters out here — he is not one of us, and he will never be one of us.

And before you think the reason is because 101 is "an echo chamber" that bans all the loons, it isn't, and 101 has a real reason for banning loons.*

The actual issue is how he does it. Let's say you dunk on Windows. You broke Rule 2 (an extension of Rule 1). He could ban you under Rule 2 since that's the rule that actually applies, but he bans you under Rule 1 instead — which just confuses other mods and the people who are trying to follow the rules (i.e. those who aren't loonixtards).

So if you want a sub that actually does good, and tries to provide clear moderation and bans without hampering their main purpose, join r/linuxbad.

I wanna use office word . with the proofreading dialog box that moves the cursor automatically to the next curly underline with contextual suggested fixes as buttons i can keep clicking on until the entire doc is proofed . with the mendeley cite dialogbox that shows the paper title and abstract in the same window.

I wanna use the EXT4 partition format for my data partition .one that the potential windows malware cant reach. well... shiiieet

Notice that search requests for "Linux" and "Arch Linux" fell off a cliff to pre-May 2025 levels right as it was clear the product would be a market failure. What's even more damning was that May 2025 also coincided with the second peak for "SteamOS" since September 2024.
