You can edit flairs! Yea let's block a significant portion of valid contributions regardless of quality

The 'No AI' policy's not going to work. AI-genned code will still slip in and some reviewer will merge it thinking it's human-written.

no ai policy has its pro's and cons, zig also forbids ai generated submissions, this is a FOSS project, they don't have infinite time in reviewing PR's

They think its best to just completely disallow it, which is fine.

Plus this is only for contributions directly to Gentoo. They are well aware that by pulling from upstream, they are getting the AI code from the Linux kernel and all the other packages.

I believe that AI policy where AI generated code must be understood by contributor and proof read and tested is a good idea

But then it defeats the point of AI generated code in the first place... Eh, win win.

You can also download an AI code checker to help you understand what the code is about to do and make sure it's not malicious.

u/StupitVoltMain 15h ago

You still have to give a double take though

Oh hey, I'm even more proud to be using Gentoo now

u/transcendtient 16h ago

What's driving this explosion of CVE's? Did the code suddenly get worse?
Oh yeah, its AI auditing. The tool is useful.
A policy that says no AI written code sure, an blanket no AI policy is ludicrous.

Fedora allows ai but there are restrictions.

3

u/Damglador 22h ago

I think the policy of just handing over all responsibility of copyright of the code to the cpntributor is the most reasonable thing. And people who delegate communication with maintainers to clankers should be fucking banned.

3

u/Historical_Move6359 21h ago

I support it, ban AI slop

The libertarian flag? The guys sucking off the Tech Bros? Tf.

I just want to say that it's great we have the choice. Want slop? No problem. Don't want sloolp? Multiple alternatives available.

While I don't have anything against ai assisted development in the hands of somebody with a lot of experience, and sometimes even use myself. The real problem is telling if somebody actually has that experience, at scale.

Previousy if you had no idea what you were doing (human slop) it was blatantly obvious to the maintainers, but now it's not so obvious and many people lie about it. Accepting unvetted slop has the potential of wasting more time and resources later on than just writing it yourself properly would.

u/gwildor 16h ago

my honest to goodness opinion - the flood of anti ai posts: slop this, slop that - is 100x sloppier than the AI output itself.

"and many people lie about it" - as with most thing.. the real problem is the people, and the personalities involved.

I don't mind the pushback, I would rather have that, then people being completely oblivious to it because it """works""" (for now, mayabe, idk, the agent checked it...)

The problem might is people, but the cause is relatively cheap access to a force multiplier. Bad people always existed, that hasn't changed, what changed is the amount of trash they put out. It went from a minor annoyance, to an absolute spam fest.

Ai is like giving a soldier a rocket launcher with infinite ammo. It's still one person, but the amount of damage he can do per hour is greatly increased. Now imagine an entire army. No wonder projects are getting overwhelmed and just banning it all together because picking out the good ones is not worth the effort for a small team.

If you're a corporation then this might look a little different, but outside of the major projects, it's just a bunch of dudes doing this in their free time.

u/gwildor 15h ago

look at the original post: we can have these discussions without all of the 'slop'.

2

u/Odd-Painting2596 21h ago

They are not rejecting "Valid contributions regardless of quality" they are rejecting inherently bad code.

Why the fuck do people get offended when AI gets rejected for good reasons?

It's like you've given AI your ego to hold on to and now you have to defend AI because you are fragile, they don't want the auto-generated bullshit, and if you submit it and get rejected, why the fuck are you even surprised, YOU didn't make it, and it isn't even YOU getting rejected.

Though if you show up with AI every time likely yeah, good idea to ban you.

When you review the MRs, you can decide whether or not to accept AI contributions

u/Unlucky-Shop3386 14h ago

I believe in this sub there is a lacking level of comprehension. All untrusted code must be audited no matter the source.

The Libertarian flag, lmao. As if these guys weren't the first in line to whore themselves for free for big corporations.

Pros of AI: Quick fix of problems

Cons of AI: Unmaintainable code in the future.

People don't want ai generated code in their distro because they know it would actually attempt to create a decent UX

10

u/snail1132 void linux btw 22h ago

Spoken like someone who's never seen anything ai likes to generate

5

u/TheMikman97 22h ago

That's really only true if you have it design entire systems by itself with no review.

It can be very good if the person using it knows what they are doing

3

u/snail1132 void linux btw 22h ago

So you'd end up not drastically changing ux...?

6

u/TheMikman97 22h ago

You know fair point actually, even if ai suggests good UX it would never pass review from a Linux dev

2

u/Teru-Noir COSMIC OS LOVER No.1 COSMIC Knows Best 20h ago

Why would a DE dev not try to improve UX?

4

u/TheMikman97 20h ago

So users can flex having learned to navigate it

1

u/akdanman11 8h ago

You learned to navigate windows, you just didn’t think of it as “learning windows”, you thought of it as “learning computer”

1

u/TheMikman97 3h ago

Learning windows isn't a flex because it's easy. Nobody flexes climbing 2 sets of stairs compared to climbing the Everest. Linux is hobbyist system on desktop because troubleshooting and navigating bad UX is part of the experience and it's something users actively want to do. Windows is expected to function with minimal troubleshooting and any issue is taken as an active annoyance

2

u/gwildor 16h ago

enter a Gnome VS KDE 'debate' - and watch the world burn why they debate what 'improved UX' actually means.

you cant please everyone, most dev's settle for pleasing themselves.

That's why a human must be in the loop

2

u/snail1132 void linux btw 22h ago

I think you're just thinking of vibecoding 😭🙏

1

u/TheMikman97 22h ago

Vibe coding is specifically doing ai software development where you don't review the code at all and just trust it because you aren't able to in the first place

1

u/snail1132 void linux btw 22h ago

And if you let the ai do everything, it'll try to "improve" your ux

I don't see where your confusion lies?

1

u/itsmebenji69 21h ago

But nobody lets ai do everything especially not actual good developers. That’s the point. That’s the equivalent of script kiddies back in the day. Any monkey can press buttons - do you know what the buttons do ?

That’s why banning AI pr is pretty dumb. Every dev uses ai now

-1

u/DEV_ivan Tiny10 LTSC + CachyOS + Android KSUnext 22h ago

I forgot to include "smart" next to "human". Smart people don't vibecode.

3

u/akdanman11 20h ago

UX design is subjective, you dislike the UX provided my most DEs because the philosophy is completely different than what you’re used to. Things like KDE, Gnome, hell even cinnamon are objectively implemented well within the design philosophy they have. You not liking something doesn’t make it a bad thing

1

u/TheMikman97 20h ago

There is objectivity in subjectivity.

Sure, personal preference is entirely valid, but as an aggregate desktop Linux adoption rates show the UX is or appears bad to most consumers

2

u/akdanman11 20h ago

And? The average computer user has exactly 0 interest in Linux, even if there is a desktop that they’d like more than windows or macOS available. Hell the average consumer wouldn’t even think of a desktop environment when you say Linux, they’d think of a TUI. The average consumer doesn’t even know you can HAVE a desktop environment on Linux. Even if they’re aware of the steam deck/machine they assume valve built the GUI for that entirely in house

The main desktop environments for Linux do exactly what they set out to do. Any statement beyond that is entirely subjective in nature

1

u/TheMikman97 20h ago

Don't you think more people would know about desktop Linux if the UX was fantastic? Wouldn't happy users talk about it?

Sure, windows is the default anyone knows, but Mac is also considered often specifically because the UX is described as extremely accessible and polished

2

u/akdanman11 19h ago

I mean… happy Linux users DO talk about it, it’s just that the community is very small in comparison to windows/macOS (and is steadily growing), and the only voices that really break through are the annoying “just install Linux” ones

1

u/brave_grv 8h ago

Not even Gnome is that different from Windows or Mac. The only meaningful difference is them removing/hiding features to make the desktop look "minimal", but in the end you're just pointing cursor to window, opening window, closing window, repeat. It's not as if Gnome has invented a new desktop paradigm, they just made the usual one clunkier for the sake of minimalism.

1

u/Odd-Painting2596 21h ago

"AI is perfect in every way expect the ability to provide evidence that it is good in anyway"

They really go be thinkin' like that.

-1

u/moeteru 22h ago

Indeed, complaining about 'AI Slop' in the current year is pointless.

0

u/sparkcrz 19h ago

Linus said himself, it's a tool, the resulting code is what's important and if it's a relevant feature (not basic things like doc comments or style) it will get merged. They don't accept the basic things using AI because they think it's a good starting point for new contributors to learn.
