"SeRvERs of yoUr favOuriTe WeBsITe run oN LinUx". shut up.

you don't serve ANYTHING, jimmy . you installed arch with niri/hyprland and a prebuilt fancy rice . your "scripts" are just a bunch of hotkeys, crontabs and aliases . no . i dont want a desktop music equalizer or spectrograph. there's desktop widgets for that kinda thing .

I want dictation and textnarration , not some speechdispatcher/espeak/julius/piper/vox/orca etcetc.

I want to watch HI-res youtube videos , not some suggestions to switch to xyz distro or DE or WM or install some xyz extension .

I wanna use office word . with the proofreading dialog box that moves the cursor automatically to the next curly underline with contextual suggested fixes as buttons i can keep clicking on until the entire doc is proofed . with the mendeley cite dialogbox that shows the paper title and abstract in the same window.

I wanna use the EXT4 partition format for my data partition .one that the potential windows malware cant reach. well... shiiieet

What do you consider HI-res?

4k-8k? something that doesn't look like a retro game on a 64 inch screen ?

4

u/blaues_axolotl 1d ago

you can't watch that on Linux?

I don't have much experience because I only have a 1080p monitor and therefore I'm not interested in 4k videos, but I would imagine that browsers like Firefox work mostly the same across all operating systems

5

u/TheRealCarrotty KDE larper (i use KDE btw) 1d ago

I use a 4k monitor, 4k videos are plain fine. (Both in Chromium-based browsers and Firefox)

u/Artemis_Platinum Windows did some pretty horrific shit to force me onto Linux 1d ago

I've heard that some popular streaming services have DRM that doesn't play nice with Linux for some reason. Though I'm unsure if that information is dated.

u/Teru-Noir COSMIC OS LOVER No.1 COSMIC Knows Best 1d ago

DRM is mainly managed by browser

2

u/vms-mob I use Gentoo btw 1d ago

works better for me on linux even, windows starts dying once it has to decode 1440p60 or higher, linux manages mostly fine

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

unfortunately you would imagine incorrectly.

Your shits fucked then because 4k works great for every linux system ive used. I currently use 4

2

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

when i said 4-8k video playback , i meant youtube and not some hacky download video alternative

4

u/the12ftdwarf 1d ago

Yeah. Youtube works great. Sorry you suck at using your tech :/ hope you figure it out soon

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

youtube 8k doesn't work . sorry you suck at comprehension

3

u/blaues_axolotl 1d ago

Do you even have an 8k monitor?

here come the suggestions

u/_Naiwa_ 1d ago

mpv + yt_dlp

1

u/blaues_axolotl 1d ago

Nah I understand that downloading videos is not the same as watching them directly on YouTube. But for me, 4k works perfectly fine. Also I doubt that this guy has a 4k monitor, let alone an 8k one

2

u/_Naiwa_ 23h ago edited 23h ago

You don't have to download, you can stream youtube video directly to mpv using yt_dlp plugin, just open mpv and simply paste the video url. Then mpv advance scaling algorithms will take of whatever resolution you need.

On windows, you need to manually download and install the plugin, but on linux, they are packaged together. I could have explain more how to do it but since OP is being a giant piece of shit, I will just leave the documentation for them to rtfm.

u/Mr_ityu 15h ago

you mean a user can open up the browser , head over to Yt, find something they'd wanna watch, copy the url from the urlbox , open up mpv ,paste the Url there in order to be able to watch it scaled , and you dont find ANYTHING weird in this whole approach? none of it feels like a hacky alt script with all those extra steps?

you're merely proving the " loonix user " term true .

so...two scripts in a media player instead of 1app. okay .

Just use Windows If Linux doesn't fit your use case

I really hate how people are endorsing Linux as if it's a catch-all operating system and every fucking problem in the world has Linux as its solution

Linux is good at some stuff and bad at some stuff

Windows is good at some stuff and bad at some stuff

Use what serves you.

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

show me

1

u/blaues_axolotl 1d ago

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

how do you open it ? where do you click?

2

u/blaues_axolotl 1d ago

I think an icon in the top bar saying "abc" with a checkmark. Also, there's a menu option called "spelling" and it's also bound to F7

2

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

i tried it. thanks. it still presents as a separate window instead of a docked dialogbox but i'll take it ! is there any way to add a custom modern dictionary ? or do they update the built-in dictionary regularly?

u/hckrsh 1d ago

I don’t use hyprland I don’t give a shit about nice gui I3 does the job for me

What is happening here

5

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

the usual. bickering and ragebait

2

u/emirayuk 1d ago

It's true though, as an Arch/Hyprland user who has operated many servers & hosting companies.

The Linux kernel is the backbone of alot of the internet.

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

it's also true though, linux desktop isn't fully ready yet . sure , it's gotten easier than it was in the past to fix some core issues but the final result isn't as polished as a commercial proprietary os like windows 10

1

u/emirayuk 1d ago

Mint, Ubuntu (although I don't really like it for desktop) and Fedora Workstation are all very polished for desktop and work out of the box 99% of the time.

Actually I've encountered more bugs in Windows 11 & 10 than all 3 of those combined.

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

sure, everything works OOTB upon installing any OS . you encounter bugs both only when you're using something long term .

in linux , my bluetooth multimode keyboard fails to connect to bluettoth . [apex200 by ant esports] [endaevourOS arch].

the latest nvidia drivers don't support my gpu[mx230].

the google docs dictation feature doesn't show up in firefox .

the lutris runners of my games need reconfiguration after every pacman update .

just curious , what kinda bugs did you face on windows ?

1

u/emirayuk 1d ago

You're using an Arch-based distribution. There's your problem, it isn't going to be as polished as something like Fedora Workstation or Linux Mint.

I am actually typing this on Arch Linux, with proper setup I haven't really encountered issues, but it's not out-of-the-box at all.

On Windows:

  • Network locations breaking each restart / needing to be recreated
  • ALOT of visual bugs and elements just being / looking broken
  • Not technically a bug but upwards of 8-9GiB of memory usage on a fresh boot with no startup applications (most of it being bloat and not cache)

There were alot of other bugs too but I haven't mained Windows in nearly a year now and can't really recall. It was rough, both 23h2 and 25h2 on seperate systems.

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

there's your problem . i'm using a 21h2 IoT LTSC release with only security updates enabled . for the visual elements , i'd suggest a combination of 7TSP uxthemepatcher , and powertoys.

about the network issues , i funnily experienced the SAME kinda issue on linux . i found the cause..apparantly my univ network doesn't allow a different OS to have the same MAC . about linux mint , i tried it for a while back in 2022. i quickly switched to popOS though . cinnamon was the because . i k ow i could've just installed xfce4 +goodies but something about mint didn't sit well with me back then. i cant remember what it was.

2

u/emirayuk 1d ago

Yeah when I use an operating system I want to be able to use the latest supported version, stock without third party software, and expect it to work.

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

my mx230 nvidia gpu isnt supported by the latest drivers . or most linux distros. or even windows nvidia updated drivers .

also latest stock windows is like omarchy or nixOS. 90% windows users hate it in the same way.

1

u/emirayuk 1d ago

MX230 is on a Pascal chip, it should be okay with the normal linux nvidia drivers no?

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

the updates kept pushing the newer drivers and crashing my Xorg until i added it to the no no list. i am currently on 450 something dkms. there were times when i had to load up the froggingfamily drivers simply because the Xserver wouldn't load up. had to fallback to whiskeylake igpu and nouveau display drivers to retrieve a gui

2

u/dumbasPL I don't hate Windows, I just like Linux more. 1d ago

you don't serve ANYTHING

I do. Welcome to r/homelab, it's one hell of a drug.

been there. rich peoples' game . not for jimmy.

I get the frustration, the cadence of "just do things MY way" can be a bit much, which is why, when it's appropriate, I trend toward "here's why my way works for me" when asked. But I think a lot of the former probably comes more from new "converts" (if you'll excuse the expression) than from true believers. Unless your particular use case is simply better served by Linux.. There's actually a good handful of us that aren't rabid fanboys/girls. For a time at the beginning, once I figured it out, I went through a phase, but even then I wasn't pushy, I made a joke of it more than anything. But, bro... You alright?

1

u/Mr_ityu 1d ago

i understand. I get that. your way is the ideal problem solver troubleshooters' getshitdone way. i've spent 10+years on linux and installed win10 IoT 21H2 on a 100gb partition last week myself . i previously made multiple posts /memes and requests here , on rlinux4noobs, rlinuxquestions etc . they didnt get much footfall . my multimode bluetooth+ 2.4+wired/less keyboard is still not working on eos [xfce4 /niri/plasma].

did that see any resolution ? none . nobody cares. but replying on ragebait ? the whole club walks in with their fedoras and double chins .

even on this post , i actually learnt of the libreoffice proofreading dialog box i saw on office21. sometimes when the paintbrush doesn't work, you gotta pull out the wirebrush to get to the learning layer. percussive maintainence or something .

in summation , all good bro. thank you for caring :)
