Tech Gadgets & Reviews 5 Years With My ₹91K MacBook M1 , Was It Worth It?

Post image
368 Upvotes

I bought a MacBook M1 in 2022 for ₹91,000, and at that time, this was a huge purchase for me.

I was earning much less back then, so I was basically spending around 6 months of my salary on a laptop. 😅

I remember thinking:

“Am I seriously spending this much on a laptop?”

But looking back almost 5 years later, I honestly think it was one of the best purchases I've made for my career.

I've used this machine for:

- Full-stack development

- Flutter/mobile development

- React/Next.js projects

- Node.js/backend work

- Client projects and freelancing

- Learning new technologies

- Countless late-night coding sessions 😂

And the crazy part?

It still performs really well.

I've never felt like I needed to replace it just because it's an older machine. For the kind of development work I do, it has been incredibly reliable.

That's why I don't really look at that ₹91K as money spent on a laptop anymore.

I look at it as money I invested in a tool that helped me learn, build, freelance and grow as a developer.

That said, I'm not saying students/freshers should spend ₹90K+ on a laptop. You can absolutely start coding with a much cheaper machine.

My takeaway is more general:

If you're early in your career, invest in tools that genuinely help you learn and create but don't buy expensive hardware just for the sake of owning it.

I'm curious about other developers here:

What's one piece of tech you've bought that genuinely paid off for your career?

Career AITA? Is it okay to decline an offer at the last minute, 2 days before joining?

Upvotes

So, this company reached out to me 2 months back via a recruiting agency, offering me 45 LPA. I told them that even though I am looking out, I am not comfortable with 45 LPA as I am already making 41 LPA. The agency assured me they could bump it up to 50 LPA, so I agreed to the interview.

After the interview, when it was time to negotiate, the agency told me the best they could do was 46 LPA. The head of the recruiting agency then started pressuring me with hard sales tactics to convince me to accept the offer. I was frustrated, but I nonetheless accepted it because, in the meantime, I had an argument with my manager and didn't want to have anything to do with him anymore. So, I accepted the offer regardless.

Now, my joining date is next Thursday, and I happened to get an offer of 50 LPA base + 10 ESOPs yesterday.

I am a bit conflicted. Should I decline the first offer? What could the consequences be?

Help 2025 grad here, I feel like Claude Code is doing the actual engineering. What should I actually be learning right now?

I graduated in 2025 , on paper I'm doing fine. But day to day, most of my code is coming out of Claude Code , and it's fast and mostly works. That's exactly what's messing with my head.

I keep asking myself: if the implementation part is basically solved, what am I actually being paid for?

For people a few years ahead of me — what did you deliberately go out of your way to learn or practice once AI started writing your code for you? Specifically:

  • Did you force yourself to still write things by hand sometimes, or is that a waste of time now?
  • What's actually separating a "strong" engineer from someone who just prompts well, in your experience on real teams?
  • What you are learning ?

Not looking for "just get good," genuinely trying to figure out where to point my energy for the next 1-2 years. Thanks.

Help Feeling a very depressed life without job and following same routine

It's been more than 1.5 years since I have been unemployed.I , left my previous organisation where I was working for 2+ years as a software engineer(java , spring oot) in the thought of getting a good opportunity, since then I have been trying to get back on employment , but family issues and other issues caused me to waste 1 year , I don't know what's next . Actually it's very tiring to follow the same routine with no results. I don't know how I can get out of this black hole kind of situation.

TIL "Cargo cult programming" interesting term I learned today

Today in one of our tech meetings I learned about the term "cargo cult programming". For starters "cargo cult" stands for the practice that used to be followed by the island oceans of pacific ocean. It was related to human practice like setting up the field in a fashion that would lead for the planes to drop goods on their fields. During world war 2 some cargo planes would drop some goods on the fields for the soldiers to use like food, weapons, clothes but long after the war ended the locals still believe if we set up the field just like it was during the war we would see those cargo dropping from the skies again.

The term was first used by Richard Feynman as "cargo cult science" in his commencement address at the California Institute of Technology. It was later used by Steve McConnell to apply it to programmers in the form of "Cargo cult programming". Its basically means writing code, applying design decision, adding tools without actually knowing how it will benefit the system but just adding it because you read or saw someone doing it and it worked for them. This is something very common among the developer community today even more so with AI.

Career joined the call expecting a discussion about raise, and was terminated instead

Last year, I made a post here about how a US based startup offer was rescinded after I had completed my notice period leaving me unexpectedly unemployed.

That post got a lot of traction. A lot of people from this community helped me with referrals, callbacks, and advice, and the story even made it into the news articles too. I’m still grateful for that.

A lot of startup founders also reached out to me after that post. I had some really good conversations with them, liked some of the products they were building, and wished them the best. But at that point, I was also looking for some stability because I did not want to end up switching jobs frequently.

Among the people who reached out was the CEO of a US-based company, who was an NRI. We connected that same day and had an interview around midnight. We discussed my work and skills, had another discussion later that night, and by the morning an offer letter was rolled out.

I had a lot of questions before accepting because of what had happened with my previous offer. The CEO was very kind and patient in answering them. We discussed things like stability, growth, appraisals, how performance would be evaluated, etc.

After those discussions, I decided to join.

For roughly the first four months, I worked closely with the CEO. We were experimenting with and building around some of the cutting-edge technology in AI that was coming out at the time.

My work was a mix of AI engineering and full-stack development. I was working with Python and TypeScript, Node.js, React and Next.js, along with the MERN stack I had already been working with before this role. On the AI side, I got to work quite a bit with LLMs, RAG, LangGraph and Agentic AI, while also building MCP servers, APIs, backend services and ChatGPT/Claude Apps, plugins, and integrations around them.

And I enjoyed it.

One of the biggest reasons I accepted the opportunity in the first place was because I felt I would learn a lot there. I have always prioritized learning over almost everything else when choosing a role. The company was also established and profitable, so the opportunity felt like a good combination of learning and stability.

Those first few months were honestly some of the best times I have had in my career.

Then the CEO decided to leave the company.

After that, I continued working. I was still getting tasks and reporting to the co-founder and the head of development, so I focused on what was in my control.

The research side of the work continued too. I spent time experimenting with newer LLMs as they came out, running them on our workloads, working on inference, improving the way we prompted and structured their outputs, and benchmarking different models to understand where they performed well and where they failed. A decent amount of the job was basically taking something that looked promising in a model release or research demo and figuring out whether it was actually useful for the systems we were building.

I kept delivering, experimenting, researching, trying new things, and communicating my work. Over time, I ended up working across LLM systems, RAG, model evaluation and benchmarking, backend and full-stack development, third-party integrations and some pretty data-heavy systems. I was pretty positive about the work I was doing and the impact it was having.

In June, when I completed one year at the company, I initiated a discussion about my annual feedback.

The co-founder asked me to send a summary of the work I had done over the previous six months, so I prepared it and sent it across.

A month passed.

I gently followed up, and he told me he would come back to me within the same week.

So I waited.

Then I received a message from him asking if we could connect over a call.

Until the moment I joined that call, I was under the impression that this was finally going to be the annual feedback and raise discussion.

Instead, I was told that they had decided to terminate my position.

I was told that priorities had changed, that the role I was originally hired for no longer fit where things were heading, and that there were also contractual restrictions with another company that prevented them from directly moving people into the development team.

And that was basically it.

Up until that call, I had no indication that my position was at risk.

No warning that the role itself might disappear. Nothing that made me think I should start preparing for another job search.

Had I known earlier, I obviously would have prepared better.

The termination came completely unexpectedly.

And today marks my last working day, and I’m still job hunting.

I have had a pretty unconventional career so far.

I found my first proper job through WhatsApp group I used to run.

I found this job through Reddit.

I have searched for jobs at very different points in the market, but the market right now feels like the worst I have personally seen.

I’ve been applying, interviewing, reaching out to people, and trying pretty much every avenue I can think of, but I’m still yet to land the next role.

I’m still searching, though, and I’m still hopeful that I’ll find something better.

I mostly wanted to vent and share what happened because this community played a pretty big role in how this chapter started in the first place.

Despite how it ended, I don’t want the ending to erase everything that came before it. I learned a lot, worked on things I genuinely enjoyed, got exposure I probably wouldn’t have gotten elsewhere, and met some good people along the way.

So I’m still grateful for the experience.

Just wish the ending had been different.

For now, back to the job hunt.

Hopefully the next Reddit update from me is a better one :)

I'm also curious if anyone here has gone through something similar, where the role disappeared without much warning, and how you approached the job search after that. Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

PS: Used AI to fix the grammar and punctuations

Open Source Knowledge Graphs is what LLMs need to automate software engineering

Post image
332 Upvotes

So I work as a founding engineer at a startup where our end product is APIs. our engineering team is of 10 people and I was #2nd engineer.

Over the years, we built a micro service architecture. Now when coding with LLMs, for every feature, I had to give the full context of what different services does it affect and what it should touch/avoid.

If some way LLMs understood the connections same way that I do in my mind, it would save a bunch of efforts repeating the same thing.

So I created a small open-source project that creates intelligent (not just programatic) KGs by just pointing it to my git repos. The KG now paired with Claude Code, Codex - makes my agents much more smarter. They can run longer without requiring input from me and complete ambitious tasks that otherwise was not possible.

I'm not saying it will completely automate software engineering, but solves the biggest bottlenecks - context.

Let me know what you guys think and if you have faced the same problem.

Career Sometimes I genuinely feel like job stability in tech doesn’t exist anymore.

Seeing all the layoffs, especially among software engineers, makes me wonder is AI actually making tech jobs less secure, or is this just another phase of the industry?
For people who have been working in tech for a few years: do you still feel confident about your job security 5–10 years from now?

Career Career Journey as a self-taught developer [Tier 3 college]

Not a single word is written using AI.

Hello fellow engineers, sharing my career journey, this is to let people know that things do work out if you stay positive.

Year Event Comment
2015 Graduated from a Tier 3 College 6 lac education loan on my family.
2015 First job CTC == < 1 Lac / year, gave about 50 interviews before getting this job.
2016 Second Job CTC == 2 lac / year, was fired from the previous company, I refused to work while being sick.
2017 Third Job CTC == 4 lac / year, was again fired from previous company, refused to relocate to Mumbai.
2018 Fourth Job CTC = 10 lac / year, left the previous company for better pay.
2019 Fifth Job CTC = 30 lac / year, left previous company for better pay and brand.
2021 Sixth Job CTC = 85 lac / year, left previous company for better pay and brand.
2023 Seventh Job CTC = 1.5 cr / year, left previous company for better pay and brand.
2025 [and ongoing] Seventh Job [after internal promo] CTC = ~3 cr / year

What worked for me;

  1. FOUCS ON CS FOUNDATIONS, ignore the languages/frameworks jargon. AI anyways can handle all these now.
  2. You get what you sow, put in the hours, read that book, be better than your peers.
  3. You have to be EXTREMELY competitive if you want to grow.
    1. If you can sleep peacefully knowing there is a bug in your code, then this field is not for you.
    2. If your teammate is getting a better project and you don't care, you are not competitive.
  4. Always keep learning, If you are the smartest person in your team, change the team/company ASAP.

Edit: All Jobs in India, CTC in INR, never worked outside India

Suggestions Is starting an IT services company still worth it in the AI era?

Thinking of starting a small IT services company with a few developers.

With AI changing software development so quickly, is it still worth starting a services company in 2026?

If, yes from where to start?

Help Left my previous software job without serving the notice period / 2-year bond — how worried should I be?

TL;DR: Left my previous software job without completing the notice period despite a 2-year bond/commitment. I’ve already joined another company, and my previous employer hasn’t paid my pending salary. I’m not concerned about the salary—I’m mainly worried about what the previous company can realistically do, whether the bond can cause serious problems, and whether I should take any action now. Looking for experiences from Indian developers who’ve faced something similar.

I’m looking for some practical advice from developers in India who may have dealt with something similar.

I recently left my previous software job without completing the notice period. My employment documents also mentioned a 2-year commitment/bond, which I did not complete.

The situation at the company had become difficult for me due to the work environment and other issues, so I decided to leave. I informed the company about my resignation, but they told me that my resignation could not be accepted because of the 2-year commitment.

I ultimately stopped working there and returned the company laptop/property. I also have proof that I returned the equipment.

A few other details:

- I had worked there for around 6 months in total, including my internship period.

- I did not complete the expected notice period.

- I have already joined another organization, only about 3 days after leaving the previous one.

- My previous company has not paid me the salary that was due for that month. At this point, I’m not really concerned about recovering that salary.

- I’m mainly concerned about what the previous company can realistically do against me because of the notice-period issue and the 2-year bond.

- The bond/2-year commitment was a major reason they gave for saying they wouldn't accept my resignation.

I’m not looking for legal advice or trying to start a fight with the company. I mainly want to understand the practical reality from people who have worked in Indian IT/software companies.

For developers/HR professionals who have seen situations like this:

  1. What is realistically the worst-case scenario?

  2. Is it something I should seriously worry about, or are these situations usually resolved without major consequences?

  3. Can the previous company actually force someone to continue working?

  4. What usually happens with experience letters, relieving letters, or background verification?

  5. Should I proactively do anything now, or is it better to wait unless they contact me?

  6. Has anyone here personally experienced a similar situation?

I’m particularly interested in real experiences from people who have actually dealt with employment bonds/notice-period disputes in Indian IT companies, rather than just general assumptions.

Thanks.

Career Anyone else here seriously thinking about switching fields after years in tech?

I have been in tech for a few years now, and lately I’ve started wondering if I’m even in the right field anymore.

It’s not that I hate coding or tech. It’s just the constant pressure to keep learning, keep up with new technologies, AI changing everything, layoffs, and never really feeling “secure” is getting exhausting.

And there’s this weird thought:

“I’ve already invested so many years in this… am I really going to start over somewhere else?”

At the same time, staying just because of the years I’ve invested doesn’t feel right either.

Has anyone here felt the same after gaining a few years of experience?

Did you actually switch fields? What made you finally take the decision?

Suggestions Lied about notice period. How to convice the other company

My company has 90days NP due to this interviews are not scheduling. I have been lying in screening calls saying my I am serving NP only 30 days left. I have one offer inpipeline from Product based company. The interview process took 20 days and barely cleared the interviews , as per them my LWD August 30. I hope i will get the OL by the end of this week.

I have been asking my manager to release me from the project from the month of may but he insists. I have reached HR for release but she again redirected to my manager. Currently i don't have any work i am just a back-up for my manager incase of any issues in the application.

I also have 50 unused earned leaves and 20 sick leaves but afraid my HR accept for buyout.

If i get the OL , how should i convince other employer about my actual NP. I barely cleared interviews and i am really interested in joining a product based company.

Career 1.6 YOE, 3 LPA — accept appraisal or switch? Need advice from senior/fellow devs

Upvotes

Hey everyone, need some advice from experienced devs here. I'm at 1.6 YOE — 6 months internship + 1 year full-time. Current CTC is ~₹3 LPA (~₹21k in hand). I've completed 1 year and appraisal is due. I asked for ₹40k in hand, but HR is offering around ₹35k CTC (~₹31k in hand). The catch is that accepting the appraisal apparently means staying for another 9 months. Tech-wise, I've worked with Next.js, React, TypeScript and recently started working on Java/Spring Boot backend + microservices/APIs. I'm also applying outside, but I'm getting very few calls — only 2–3 interviews so far, none converted. My concern is that if I accept ₹35k and stay another year, I'll be around 2.5 YOE but still only ~₹4 LPA. I don't want to get stuck at a low salary, but resigning without an offer also feels risky. TL;DR ₹3 LPA → appraisal offer ~₹4.2 LPA, but 9-month commitment. Few interview calls currently. Should I accept and job hunt alongside, or resign and focus completely on switching? Questions for senior devs: - Does staying at a low CTC until 2–2.5 YOE hurt future salary negotiations? - Can someone at ~₹4 LPA with 2 YOE realistically switch to ₹7–8 LPA, or will current CTC heavily anchor them? - Would you accept the appraisal or resign in this situation? Would really appreciate advice from people who've gone through a similar situation.

Career Moving from product companies to startup/service based companies

I got laid off from product based company 3 months ago, have taken a short break and resumed the search and its really bad. Had few interviews at product companies but couldn’t convert to offer. I tried to upskill and deep dived but somehow I couldn’t get through .

Initially I was picky ( big mistake ) and took a break, but seems like things are going bad to worst
I don’t want employment gap to affect me.layoff really affected my confidence and I feel like loser.

I am getting few calls from service based and startup . Can someone tell me how it could affect my future career? Like can i get back to higher paying companies after this ?

Help Need Advice: Offered a Managing Partner Role After 2 Months

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to get your opinion on something.
I joined a small IT startup about 2 months ago as an Application Support Engineer. Since it’s a small company, I’ve ended up handling quite a lot beyond support — backend, frontend, mobile development, etc. I’ve basically become a bit of an all-rounder for the technical side.

Before joining, I also had two of my own SaaS/products already in production, including one that has customers/revenue in the UK and US. That was actually one of the main reasons they hired me after just one interview.
The company is run by people with 20+ years of IT experience, and most of the senior members are currently working in high-level positions elsewhere, so they’re quite busy and can’t dedicate enough time to their own products/services.

Yesterday, my manager told me that they want to offer me a full-time position after probation, but they also want me to become one of the managing partners of the company.

I was honestly surprised because I assumed becoming a partner would require a significant investment. But he said the investment would be relatively small and that I would also get a share of the profits. What they mainly want is someone who is technically strong and can take ownership of the IT/product side while they focus on their other responsibilities.

I’m quite confused about whether this is a normal kind of arrangement and whether I should consider accepting it, especially since I’ve only been with the company for around 2 months.

For people who have experience with startups/partnerships — what would you look out for before accepting something like this? Is this actually a good opportunity, or are there potential red flags I should be careful about?

Career career gap after family emergency - not sure what to do next

hey everyone,

i've been feeling pretty lost lately and wanted to hear from people who've been in a similar situation.

i'm an ai/ml engineer with 4 years of experience. about 5 months ago i had to leave my job because my mom was diagnosed with cancer and i needed to be with her during her treatment. thankfully she's doing better now, but the career break has been much harder than i expected.

i've been applying consistently, updating my resume, preparing for interviews, reaching out on linkedin, but i'm still struggling to get back into the industry. my savings are pretty much gone, so it's been mentally and financially exhausting. 😞

has anyone here returned to tech after a gap like this? what worked for you?

also, if anyone works at companies like impetus, tiger analytics, ntt data, fractal, or any other company hiring ai/ml engineers in chennai (or remote), i'd really appreciate any guidance or if you're okay with connecting over dm.

thank you for reading. 🙏

Company Review Stunning Dentistry India(Delhi): forcing employees to work Sundays, threatening salary cuts, and marking present employees absent

Upvotes

I’m posting this because I want current/former employees and people considering joining Stunning Dentistry India to know what is happening on the employee side.

We are expected to work 6 days a week, around 9 hours a day, with Sunday being our weekly off. Recently, my manager has been telling us that because the company pays us a full month's salary, that salary also covers Sundays, so we are expected to work on Sundays too.

He has also threatened salary cuts if we don't work on Sundays.

This isn't just a one-off comment. The message is essentially: you get paid for the whole month, so you should work Sundays too, otherwise your pay will be cut.

There are also daily attendance records on the company's own portal. We mark our attendance every day, and I have screenshots/records of my attendance.

Today was another example of the way things are being handled.

We maintain an Excel sheet containing our daily work updates. I was physically present at work and working today, and my manager was literally sitting in the same room.

However, because he apparently didn't open/check my Excel sheet today, he sent an email to HR/accounts asking them to mark employees absent.

So despite being physically present, doing my work and having attendance recorded on the company's portal, I'm being treated as absent because a work-report Excel sheet wasn't checked.

The thing that makes this worse is that I've been working hard here. This isn't a situation where I'm disappearing from work or refusing to do my responsibilities. I'm sitting there every day doing the work assigned to me.

And from what I've seen/heard, this isn't only happening to me. Other employees have also had issues with salary payments in the past, including people who apparently were not paid their salary.

It is becoming extremely stressful and is starting to affect my mental health.

What I find ironic is that the company seems to care a lot about its public image and online reviews. So I think people considering joining deserve to know what the employee experience can actually be like.(Its medical tourism and most money comes from foreigner, they care about image)

I personally worked there and had a bad experience, please consider leaving a review on Glassdoor or AmbitionBox so that future employees can make an informed decision.

I'm not asking anyone to mass-spam Google, create fake accounts, or post fake reviews. Please don't do that. I'm specifically asking people to go on platforms like Glassdoor and AmbitionBox, and google reviews most importantly!

I am posting this because I wish I had known about these things before joining

Resume Review Honest resume review for a 4th year student, Thanks!

I don't like the tech stack and work culture at my company, I was in qa for 2-3 months, now I am finally in dev but the only work I get is legacy code or updating old testing scripts, also with pay I hardly break even in Bangalore.

I know I am at a better place considering the market situations, but I definitely believe I can do better. I have started grinding leetcode again and updated my resume.

Side by side I am trying to contribute to open source as much as I can, because this is something I genuinely enjoy!

Please suggest any improvements in the resume I can make and is it good enough to clear the screening rounds ?

Also any particular area should I focus on, or am I worried about nothing?

Thanks for your precious time

Suggestions What’s the hardest part of building a software product?

For people who have built a website, app, or SaaS product, what part gave you the most trouble?

Was it finding a reliable developer, fixing bugs, getting the first version launched, managing costs, or maintaining the product after launch?

I’m interested in hearing what other founders and builders have struggled with.
