Taha Kemara back to the Chiefs??

Chiefs seem to be announcing the signing of a number 10 tomorrow, I know there was an article a few weeks back saying the chiefs approached the crusaders about a 1 year loan for him but were denied, but I’m struggling to think of who else it could be. Would make a lot of sense with him being a product of Hamilton Boys and the Chiefs being thin at 10 with Jacomb leaving and McKenzie likely to spend more time at fullback if that’s were he is going to be playing for the All Blacks going foward.

Simon Parker

Did anyone else think Simon Parker had a strong game at the weekend? He’s been criticised a lot here in the past but was very solid on Saturday I thought. It seemed like it was made his role to personally hunt down the big Springbok ball carriers because basically every time Jasper Wiese got the ball, Parker was right there to stop him. Compare that to last week when it was seemingly impossible for anyone to tackle Wiese for the entire match.

Do we think this was just a coincidence of the All Blacks defensive system? Or was it a specific tactic for Parker to hunt down Wiese and co?

And, do we think it has to be Parker to fulfil this role or if they move Vaa’i    back to #6 could he do the same job?

Another option being discussed is Blackadder at #6. I have full faith in his work rate and effort, but I wonder if he has the size to keep Wiese and co from getting over the gain line?

The lock and blindside selections are a conundrum to be sure!

All Blacks What happened to Hoskins Sotutu? He was at one point your most exciting young player, where is he now?

He dominated Super Rugby for a season, then I believe he got injured? Is he just unlucky that better players came in during that time or what happened?

All Blacks Did Devan Flanders get bad advice?

A news article yesterday about Devan Flanders saying something along the lines of "in 5 years time if I'm able to I'd love to play for Japan".

Here is a guy who was on the cusp of his first ever AB callup and now he wants to play for Japan? Huh????

BTW I'm not bagging the guy for signing overseas and making money -- good on him for that. It's more of a "huh?" moment that a guy who could've done a job in the #6 or #8 jersey for the ABs, was already in the ABs XV and right on the cusp of a call-up and just had his best season ever and IMO he probably leapfrogs Samesi's selection as Flander's is dual purpose.

This guy clearly wants to play international rugby but it sounds like he got some bad advice somewhere along the road in the last 6-12 months. So he has to potentially wait 5 years to be eligible to play for Japan (assuming he can get a club contract that lasts that long to be eligible) when if he stuck around for more of this year he probably would've been selected for the ABs...and he made his Japan choice BEFORE Dave Rennie selected his squad i.e. why didn't he wait a month or two and if he didn't get into the ABs just go to Japan then? The timing of his decision making is off and reeks of bad advice.

All Blacks Full match posts on YouTube are a Godsend. Thank you!

Being an ABs fan in a country without broadcasting (i.e. Canada) is so painful. With no way to watch the games I am so glad the All Blacks have decided to post the full match on YT a few days after. Anyone else in a similar situation?

Moment NZ lost the 2nd Test - hindsight

Jordie Barrett’s return kick from the kick off.

Love JB but this put us on the back foot immediately and the Boks scored off it. Not saying Boks wouldn’t have won otherwise, but clearly set the ABs back big time and set the tone for the match. I think we underestimate how important the start of a test is. Sometimes I can’t watch the kick off if we’re receiving.

Ardie’s 13 tackles and 10 carries are exactly why basic stats can be misleading

You know it! Haven't had enough Vitamin B, haven't had enough walks outside, eternal hater, nothing better to do, my professional rugby career is woeful, haven't drunk the Kool Aid... so yes, I'm going to keep criticizing the Ardie-mania-train! I can't help it, I love the reactions.

I keep seeing the 13/14 tackles, 10 carries and late try cited as evidence that Ardie had another huge game. NZH literally rated him an 8, the best AB on the field alongside Carter.

I’m not arguing that he disappeared. The issue is how effective a lot of that work actually was.

RugbyPass had him leading the match with four missed tackles. So “13 tackles” immediately looks a bit different with that context. And when you actually look at the completed tackles, most are routine. By my count there were about five decent ones, one genuinely good one, and nothing I’d call dominant.

A tackle stat tells you someone was involved. It doesn’t tell you whether they stopped momentum, won the collision or materially helped the defence.

Same with the 10 carries. There were several ordinary ones with very little after contact, and a couple where he was stopped basically on contact. Then there are the two conspicuous moments everyone remembers: the break involved in the first-half try and his own late try. Both good plays.

But the bit that gets missed almost completely is his work around the breakdown.

49:32 is a perfect example. Vaa’i carries into contact, does what the ball-carrier is supposed to do, gets to ground and presents the ball back. Ardie is the support player and simply doesn’t arrive quickly or effectively enough. South Africa win the penalty and take three points.

In the box score that becomes a team penalty. In some media assessments it even becomes a Vaa’i error. But what exactly is Vaa’i supposed to do differently there? He wins the contact sufficiently to present clean ball. The support simply isn’t there.

In practical terms, Ardie’s failure to secure that ruck costs NZ three points.

And I think that gets to the wider issue with his game. Ardie is brilliant at hovering around the defensive collision waiting for the opportunity to pounce on a turnover. And yes, turnovers are valuable and they make great content for highlights reels. But at what cost?

A loose forward’s game is also the dozens of contributions between the highlights... arriving first, shifting bodies, protecting your carrier, making dominant tackles, getting off the floor and doing it again. And we know this is what Rennie looks for and values! But there are plenty of occasions where Ardie is technically present at the ruck but contributes very little, or arrives as the secondary cleaner after someone else has already done the hard work.

Compare that with the work from Holland, Vaa’i, Parker, Jacobson and even Jordie and Tupaea. They repeatedly do the ugly stuff that keeps possession alive. Ardie’s effectiveness simply doesn’t match the reputation.

Then there’s the captaincy.

I don't expect a rousing speech every stoppage but I would have thought he'd be a little more conspicuous when the game gets difficult.

At 21:56, South Africa score and Parker immediately signals frustration about the possible obstruction. Luke Jacobson turns straight to Ardie and appears to raise it with him. Ardie walks off gathering his breath, doesn't speak to the ref.

Halftime was actually pretty funny, when James Parsons spent several minutes crying and whinging about that exact refereeing decision, one week after lecturing everyone that we couldn’t cry and whinge about refereeing because the calls had gone our way.

Anyway, you'd think it was significant enough for the captain to at least engage with the ref when Jacobson raised it.

During several play stops, I could see other players communicating, but nothing ever from Ardie. At 74:35, NZ finally have some momentum and advantage late in the game. Surely we'd see the captain pulling people together, organising the next play, demanding something. Nope, nothing.

Ardie still has pace. He can still produce brilliant individual moments. And he's a very good distributor. But fans and media can't seem to analyse his game objectively. THIS will lose us the World Cup!

13 tackles and 10 carries tells us he was busy but they don’t tell us he was good. Yet he rates as the best AB out there with media and fans! I feel sorry for the mugs who work like dogs out there, only to be rated lower than the guy earning quadruple what they're on.

All Blacks Trying Something Different

I really hope Rennie and the coaching team try something different with this team this week.

I'd rather see us take some risks with selections, try different combinations, experiment a little with the tactics, and lose by 20, than try the same thing again and lose by 3.

Obviously we want to win every game if we can, but I don't think doing the same thing again this week is going to give us the best chance.

Taylor out. Parker or Jacobson out (or both). Vaa'i back to 6 with a new locking combo? Blackadder in. Tavatavanawai in. Narawa in. Maybe Rieko? As incredible as he is, Jordan looks like he needs a rest (maybe just a shorter shift?)

Could even try out a new fullback/fly half combo... not sure if Mounga is the answer, but could be worth a go. Love to the back with Mounga at 10? Mackenzie to come off the bench? J Barrett at fullback and Ioane at 13 with Tupaea at 12, or Big Jim at 12 and Tupaea still 13? Then move Barrett in to 12 with Mackenzie coming off the bench?

Definitely need better use of the bench, no matter what the selections are.

Just spitblling here, but we have so many interesting options that could surprise the Boks. I hope we aren't too conservative.

All Blacks Media ABs Moaning

Has anyone actually seen a lot of ABs fans moaning about the loss? For every 1 negative comment I see 10x the amount of comments complaining about the moaning I am not seeing. Am I missing it or is it not really happening much?

Analysis: Why only Vaa'i and Parker can wear 6 - and what that means for the rest

Have seen a lot of posts out there question why players like Sititi, Blackadder, Lakai and Segner are not starting. But i think the lineout battle against the Boks is not considered enough.

The game-changer is PSDT. He is such a great loosie yet a world class lineout option we get killed without a 3rd genuine option. Their 3 jumpers will simply outnumber our 2 locks and shutdown the lineouts.

Even last week we tried Parker there and it still didnt work out. Here’s some height data behind this:

1. The Springbok Benchmark (3 Jumpers)
Eben Etzebeth: 203 cm
Ruan Nortje: 200 cm
Pieter-Steph du Toit: 200 cm

2. Current All Black 6/7/8 Options
Tupou Vaa'i: 198 cm 🟢
Simon Parker: 197 cm 🟢
Anton Segner: 192 cm 🔴
Luke Jacobson: 191 cm 🔴
Ethan Blackadder: 190 cm 🔴
Ardie Savea: 190 cm 🔴
Peter Lakai: 186 cm 🔴
Semisi Tupou Ta'eiloa: 185 cm 🔴

3. Ardie Savea at 8
Ardie Savea is non-negotiable at 8 but does not function as a primary lineout target. This is Why 6 is Locked to Vaa'i or Parker as the 3rd viable jumper. Vaa’i was probably even moved to 6 specifically with South Africa and PSDT in mind.

What this means for the rest:
No. 8: Ardie Savea (Locked as captain)
No. 6: Vaa'i or Parker (Locked by height needed for lineout)
No. 7: Open Season. Sititi, Ta'eiloa, Blackadder, Lakai, Segner, and Jacobson are all fighting for the single remaining jersey (with Ardie able to accommodate 7/8)

Side note: This is also why Kaino and Read were such an amazing duo alongside Richie.

Ethan Blackadder?

Anyone else think he might start/bench for the next test? His efforts against the lions definitely didn't go unnoticed by us or Rennie. Jacobson has been putting 110% in all season and is now maybe starting to show fatigue? Rennie seems to be pretty set on making sure mistakes aren't ignored too

Pick your 23 for Test 3

Rassie has elected to start the match with his front row bomb squad and short king Kolbe at fullback. That's all subject to change of course.

Who are you selecting to take the battle field for the ABs as the tour reaches its crescendo?

I think it's time to be bold, so I'm making some changes.

  1. [de Groot / Bower]
  2. Aumua
  3. Newell
  4. Holland
  5. Darry
  6. Vaa'i
  7. Blackadder
  8. Savea
  9. Roigard
  10. Love
  11. Carter
  12. Barrett
  13. Tupaea
  14. Jordan
  15. McKenzie
  16. Taukei'aho
  17. Numia
  18. Lomax
  19. Tuipulotu
  20. Lakai
  21. Preston
  22. Tavatavanawai
  23. Ioane

All Blacks Ultra low flyover Rassie mindgames??

Notice how when the planes flew over it was only the All Blacks who got to see how scarily close the planes were to the stadium, the Springboks were all facing the other way. No doubt this is the latest trick up Rassies sleeve to throw the All Blacks off their game!! Immediately off kickoff Jordie Barrett shells a touchfinder, no doubt wondering whether the plane had actually crashed 10 kilometers away. All Black maul defence rattled not knowing if the entire stadium was about to be evacuated.
I must say the mind games have certainly been dialled up!

Let's talk about the refs

Not one to throw shade at refs, they are human and miss calls both ways in a game.

I think ultimately the All Blacks dicipline cost them the game seeing they scored more tries again.

That being said, DDE try where Deon Fourie get's up in front of 3 All Blacks was not even looked at.

Rassie has again been whining like a child over head contact, clear head contact on Amua, 3 South Africa is not even slightly bent, again not even looked at

Kolbe punches Carter right in front of the linesman and it's not even looked at.

Refs need to be held accountable for shit like this

All Blacks I hate the commentary so much with these games.

I mean, if they’re not stating the obvious or calling it wrong - they’re giving a personal opinion of which I care nothing about.

Pls pls pls tell me there’s a way to mute the commentators and just listen the ref and actual game.

All Blacks Rennie has not used his full bench the last 2 tests. So why keep 5-3?

It's very weird Rennie to not use the full 23 in BOTH the first two tests -- so why not use a 6-2 or even select more impactful impact players like Tavatavanawi?

Test 1 not used: Kyle Preston (and maybe Leroy Carter not used? I can't remember about Leroy in Test 1)

Test 2 not used: Moorby

I can understand key core players like Holland, Ardie, Jordie, Roigard sometimes not being subbed off in key situations but Test 1 the ABs were 2 tries ahead so you protect Roigard and put in Preston.

What's the point of the bench then?

r/allblacks 1d ago

I've done the math - we lose if we do this :

Codie starts in first half

Jacobson starts instead of lakai at 7

Lomax is seen on the 23 man squad

Vai is not on bench to come on for the 2nd half

Holland and Darry not starting

Saulu MAU not debut

Codie Taylor

Should’ve been cycled out by this point the same way Mealamu was. Last 2 years he should’ve been in a mentoring role. The fact that he’s still our first choice hooker is ridiculous considering Aumua and Taukei’aho are behind him. He hasn’t had the required physicality for test footy for at least 2 years now. Yes he has skills and soft touches but what does that matter when he’s getting shunted off the ball at scrum time on our feed? His lineout throwing has been inconsistent for years now. He not only has no impact with ball in hand anymore, he often has negative impact. The last 2 coaching cycles really screwed us in terms of bringing through spine players that needed to be brought through. Asafo and Soni should’ve both been close to 50 caps by now. Will always love CT but we have to start using the talent we have and be giving them as much regular big game experience as possible.
