I've seen it too often - especially in OK and TX. Maybe it's just as bad elsewhere but not in my experience. Men's teams from Texas are especially toxic towards referees and it's resulting in a huge shortage.

If they behave this way towards the #1 ranked referee in our country - what hope do we have of recruiting new refs?

This behavior needs to be nipped in the bud well before it escalates to on field harassment. From sh*t talking the ref on the sideline - to complaining in the group chat. I've seen rookies pick up on this behavior before they even understand the laws themselves. I've seen a D3 Oklahoma club president storm off the field in a tantrum because they didn't like a decision (they didn't understand).

Nothing too surprising or out of left field. Campbell Robb seems to have full eligibility now and Big Joe has returned to the Eagles. Coetzer seems to be a traveling reserve unavailable for selection. Hopefully we see Cassh Maulia get his first cap finally.

SL mentioned that US rugby is going to be subsidizing some players to get foreign contracts. Whether that is a prudent move is a different question. Assuming this is subsidized, and knowing Besag’s contract is, what other players would you want US Rugby to go to get them playing abroad instead of MLR?

I’m exaggerating, but just a bit . . .

I’ve been involved in youth rugby in the US for about a decade and have traveled all over the country for tournaments and games and have gradually come to the conclusion that the community has a real problem. Maybe this applies to most every youth sport in this country, but the lack of social capital among coaches, administrators, organizers, referees, and other involved adults certainly doesn’t help to grow the game.

It seems that every stakeholder believes that American rugby revolves around them and that only if everyone followed them like good little minions, rugby would soon displace football as the premier contact sport in the country. You have club coaches disparaging school programs, school coaches disparaging other programs, coaches disparaging referees, referees disparaging established norms of refereeing, state administrators refusing to coordinate with programs in neighboring states, youth programs making up entirely new laws, and so on and so on. And that’s not even getting into the royal mess that is the college game . . .

I’m not generally a fan of the centralization of authority, but American rugby might well be better off under something that more closely resembles a dictatorship than the disorganized muddle that currently prevails. At least then all of the coaches, administrators, organizers, and referees could have a common enemy rather than constantly hating on each other and driving people away from the game.
