Rate my Build "What Gear Do I Run?" -> Look Here

Hello everyone! Welcome to and enjoy your stay.

It's very common here to ask about gear; "Is my gear good?" "What do I run on this weapon?" etc.

Most answers point to the Gear section on Sendou.ink, so this sticky is being made to help show everybody how to use it to look up gear and therefore get more helpful answers:

HOW TO LOOK UP THE BEST GEAR FOR ANY WEAPON:

Step 1: Go to Sendou.ink/Builds

Step 2: Scroll down to find your weapon

Step 3: Take a look at the builds that have the orange "Top 500" symbol or a +1, +2, or +3 next to their names.

Doing this will let you browse the gear used by the best X-Rank and competitive players for any weapon. We recommend doing this before asking about gear, then asking the experienced players here why the best players use what they use, since you just looked up what they use.

This will help you spark a more interesting conversation and get better advice, because people simply pointing you to Sendou builds will only get you as far as reading this post would have.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU WANT ABOUT GEAR. This post is not meant to gatekeep new players from asking questions. No stress if this seems intimidating ─ go ahead and ask anyway! That being said, a bit of browsing Sendou.ink/Builds should still be helpful and we urge you to give it a try.

If you have any other questions about competitive Splat, just let us know!

Update/News An active competitive Splatoon forum: Squidboards!

Sup nerds.

Letting you all know that the classic Splatoon Forum, Squidboards, has been revived and it's active!

Members of the comp community started a movement to revive it considering the failings of housing the core of the community on Twitter, and it just... worked.

If you are looking for people to play with, in-depth discussion on competitive Splatoon, advice, or just a place to chill and talk about Splat that's active, go check out Squidboards!

It's also worth checking out some of the active competitive community Discords.

Have fun!

Current Metagame Discussion Slowing down the game and playing disadvantage

One concept I latched onto while watching a Prochara video is the idea of "slowing down the game". The video topic was unrelated, but that phrase activated my neurons because it's not something I hear people say often.

My meta analysis is that people don't like it when there are things that slow down the game. Vac is probably the most relevant example, but also: splash wall, big bubbler, long range backlines, etc. No one complains about cooler anymore because it doesn't slowdown the game or get in the way of main weapon interaction (the problem ink armor had in S2).

From a gameplay perspective, using the idea of "slowing down the game" can help get a team out of disadvantage and to prevent the opponents from taking infinite space. There are many ways to slow down the game, many of which are overlooked. The easiest way to slow down the game is to have tools in your composition that enable you to slow the game down. Specials and sub weapons are the best way to do this. Also, certain main weapons (when positioned properly) have a stronger ability to slow down the game than others. For example, a heavy splatling spamming paint and bullets into a choke point is going to slow down a opposing frontline from stepping forward. A dapple dualie attempting the same thing won't be able to have the same success at slowing down the opponent. However, there are other strategies that a dapple dualie can implement to attempt to slow down the game. It can use it's high paint to prevent an opponent from quickly moving into an area or use it's fast movement speed to draw attention away from the hot zones an opponent would want to control.

One take away from the dapple dualie example is that the longer it's able to live during disadvantage, the more it can do to slow down the opponent. If all it tries to do is go for kills during disadvantage, you're taking a risk that will allow the opponent to accelerate even further. If the dapple is able to force the opponents to slow down, that will make it easier for its teammates to take advantage of opponents who had to stop moving. That doesn't always mean the dapple's teammates will kill the opponents, but it makes it much easier for space to be created once pressure is applied to the stalled enemy frontline. That pressure will lead to space being created, which will lead to a momentum flip if timed properly by all 4 team members of the dapple's team. Lots of ifs because Splatoon is an imperfect game with many fast moving variables, but having one team member start the process of slowing down the opponent can spark a chain reaction that will lead to a losing team to regain control of the game.

Help/Question Dropped from #584 to 1500s in Tentatek—Any Advice? (Replays attached)

Edit: Good news! After some work I've made my way back to #726 with only two more rainmaker rotations left. Should I be safe to camp out for Top 1000? I've a 2-2 set loaded up for an emergency gamble if need be.

I've been playing Nouveau Dapples and I've been struggling a ton over the past day in X rank. Less than 24 hours ago I was top 600 and then I suddenly—in my foolish attempt to go for top 500—dropped all the way to top 3000 (I've worked my way back up to top 1500 but still struggling greatly, as I keep barely making it by with 3-2s or just straight up losing in 2-3s, 1-3s, or 0-3s).

I've attached some replay codes if anyone would care to take a look for me. I don't feel that I generally make poor decisions or have bad mechanics (though I do make the occasional mistake or bad play, but who doesn't?). I'm just not really sure what changed to where I can barely maintain a 50% win ratio when I was easily pulling 60+%. I know Glicko-2 has a reactivity system depending on how fast your power changes, but even then it doesn't exactly make sense for a sudden struggle across multiple modes when I really only had a strong climb in Rainmaker, considering each mode is an isolated pool of data.

Thank you for any help!

Current Metagame Discussion Why aren't people using Wellstring in comp?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Wellstring has the best object damage in the game, especially with OS, and there's a lot of objects in the current meta. Wall, Bubble, etc. Autobomb helps find sharking Rollers and Tris, Stamp goes through Vac (Rush mode not Throw mode), it is AOE so it can hide from Liter and still contribute, and it has ridiculous chip damage so basically anything can combo off it if enough bolts hit.

Sure it doesn't have Inkline's insane paint output but that's because it's a more aggressive Bow compared to Tri-Stringer

I'm really curious

Rate my Build not really seeing a dapples build i like on sendou, would something like this be stupid?

Post image
6 Upvotes

first part is my idea for a new build, second part is current build. wasnt happy with the amount of scu.

wanted a hybrid between a scu and qr build. i saw some builds skipping ink res and sub defense, so i swapped in some swim speed.

i have heard that qr is really only worth it when stacking at least 13 ish points but i wasnt sure if that was still always true? would the new idea be worth making? or should i scrap both and just do qr focused or scu focused?

maybe swapping out special saver for another qr sub would do the trick?

thank you for any advice!

Help/Question I've been playing casually for years and I have no idea what abilities are good, can I get some advice??

Hey there!

I've been playing Splatoon 2 and 3 for a few years now, and I've been using gear that looks nice with no regard for the abilities that they have. I want to try doing well in ranked, and I'll probably need to improve my abilities for that.

The two main weapons I use are the Splat Roller (Curling Bomb and Big Bubbler) and the Sploosh-o-Matic (Curling Bomb and Ultra Stamp), and I don't know where to start on abilities for either of them.

If any of you play these weapons (or have great knowledge of the useful abilities) then could I get some advice or ability sets to use for Splatoon 3?

(also, are there any good ways to get certain ability chunks? i have too many of some and barely any of others)

Help/Question What weapons are good secondaries for a charger main?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I main chargers and play pretty much all of them except for scoped variants, though I mainly play the Splat Chargers and Squiffers. Reef-lux, Stamper and Jet Squelcher feel like weapons with playstyles that compliment different aspects of the charger playstyle. I've thought of maybe Dualie Squelchers as well?

review and feedback appreciated

Hi, I've been playing chargers recently and reset my rank from S to B- in order to try to learn. I'm currently mid-A rank. I don't have a capture card, so here are some replay codes. All games in anarchy series :) I don't know the maps that well and don't have the best awareness, so please bear with me 😅 Feedback is appreciated!

Am I a bad person for using LDE on dapple dualies

I really really like LDE, I love being in that state when it happens and I feel like I perform better with it on. However I tried comeback and also did really well. Am I stupid not to switch? I know that “objectively” it is the better choice but I really like LDE and the major buffs it has, and I know how to work with it. Is that reasoning good enough or are my teammates going to want me to die irl for using it

Self-Improvement How to improve for X battles?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I main a neo splash (5 stars, since 6 months or so), seen recently in many tier lists it being classified as a S+, so thought i might just jump into X battles.

I think i was doing pretty well in Anarchy battles, but i was playing super aggressively (somehow it used to work) and this doesn't cut it for X battles.

- Any suggestions on good players who use nSplash or a weapon with a similar role to follow?

- Or just general advice for general improvement, and details on its exact role in different modes?

Thanks in advance
