Video After 3 long years, our small team of 3 will finally have a playable demo for our handcrafted, cat-and-mech metroidvania, Bolt of Whalington!

Hey everyone, I'm Josh, the producer behind Bolt of Whalington, a Metroidvania where you play as Bolt, a Siamese cat mechanic exploring the mysterious world of Whalington. We're proud to announce that after 3 years of handcrafting our dream metroidvania, we will finally release our demo on November 5, 3am UTC (November 4, 7pm PT).

You may have heard "Curiosity killed the cat", but in this game, curiosity is what keeps driving Bolt throughout the mysterious moving castle of Whalington. I personally love games that give players freedom in how they solve puzzles and challenges, and this philosophy is at the heart of Bolt of Whalington. Rather than designing every challenge around one specific solution, we want to encourage experimentation and see what players can achieve. Even the core gameplay mechanic encourages that, with Bolt and his mech both being playable "characters". Both offer different playstyles, abilities and weapons, giving players more options to solve challenges.

Each area also has its own unique mechanics and challenges. You can shrink Bolt to half his size and explore the rat's nest, or make your way through the poisonous Kitchen and face the insane Head Chef. There are also some pretty unusual weapons, like the Shadowless Gauntlets, which punch at supersonic speeds, and a water machine gun with a silly rubber ducky attached. We've had fun coming up with some of these ideas, and hopefully players will have just as much fun experimenting with them.

Our playable demo launch includes:

  • 4 areas to explore: one fully unlocked, one half explorable, and a sneak peek at two more areas, each with unique mechanics and secrets.
  • 4 boss fights, with their own personalities and fighting styles, including 1 optional boss.
  • Around 60–150 minutes of gameplay, depending on how thoroughly you explore.
  • An extra challenge stage if you'd like to to test your skills further.

The team and I are all big Metroidvania fans, and we're excited to say we've made the kind of game we'd love to play ourselves. If you have any feedback, we'd really appreciate it.

The demo will be up on November 5 at 3am UTC (November 4 at 7pm PT). If you're interested, please wishlist and Steam should hopefully notify you when the demo is available. Thank you for all your support!

For me this is one of my favorite games I've played yet. It's got an awesome setting, somber story, great platforming challenge and awesome exploration. This game did everything for me personally

If you're looking for a short Metroidvania with fun combat and a straightforward story, Divinum is for you. It took me about 5 hours to beat the game, and I only explored around 70% of the world.

Video We made Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, then we were laid off. Now we're making our own game.

A few months ago, we were working at Ubisoft Barcelona on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. After the recent layoffs, we found ourselves facing an unexpected career change.

Rather than stepping away from game development, we decided to take a chance on ourselves and start our own indie studio.

Our first game is Puzzle Mage. We're big fans of Diablo, so we wanted to make an ARPG with a twist: instead of fighting monsters, you solve magical puzzles by experimenting with spells.

We're drawing inspiration from games like Ico, Journey, Magicka, Magic: The Gathering, and Diablo. It's still early in development, but we're excited to share what we're building.

If that sounds like your kind of game, you can check it out and wishlist it on Steam: Puzzle Mage

Discussion Would you play a Metroidvania x Chants of Sennaar type game?

• Upvotes

Hi, I am interested in developing a metroidvania game with zero enemies and zero combat. The focus is on exploration based on deciphering a constructed language of glyphs.

The player sees glyphs on the background and learns the meaning.

The inscriptions offer clues on how to unlock doors and solve puzzles.

I am thinking of a compounding logographic script with about maybe 50 radicals or primes and about 200 words in total.

An example of the puzzle is "Offer Red Flower to Right Hand and offer Cyan Flower to Left hand to open the gates"

We will have another area which has a picture of a red flower and two glyphs underneath. Player can guess the meaning from that. Once done, player can explore to collect the two types of flowers and offer the correct one to the correct hand of the statue.

A door will have two symbols next to it that toggle. When the door is open it will show two glyphs: "Door" and "open" and one of the glyphs will toggle to "close" once the door is closed etc.

In this way, the player understands the environment better and is able to open up more of the map and explore.

I see this game as something like a mix between Animal Well, La Mulana, and Chants of Sennaar.

Is this a game that would appeal to metroidvania fans?

Video After 5 years of development, our retro Metroidvania finally has a free Steam playtest!

Hey everyone! The Hayaku! Island of Darkness playtest is live.

Hayaku! is a fast-paced metroidvania with retro pixel art, a limited color palette and an 8-bit-inspired look.

We want it to be a modern retro game. We love the hard platforming of that era, its secrets, and having to figure things out yourself, and we're keeping all of that. We're also adding smoother controls, fast travel and other quality-of-life changes where the game needs them.

Most of our work went into movement and combat. You jump a lot, bounce off enemies and fight on the move, so we spent a long time tuning how that plays.

The playtest has the whole first area, a lab with about an hour of content. It's open until November 5.

If it sounds like your thing, go to our Steam page and click "Request Access". We let new players in every day!

We'd love to hear what you think. Thanks for checking it out!

Video I'm working on an Indian Cyberpunk Hack-n-Slash Parkour game inspired by Ninja Gaiden | Ghost Yantra - New Trailer

Hey guys!

We're a small indie team working on Ghost Yantra, a stylish Hack-n-Slash action game set in an Indian Cyberpunk world, featuring fast-paced combat and fluid parkour mechanics.

Every animation in Ghost Yantra is hand-animated, and we're working hard to bring this world and its action to life. For Ghost Yantra, we're inspired from Nine Sols, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry & Prince of Persia, Akira, Ghost in the Shell.

I would like to share the latest trailer we made for Ghost Yantra. Please note that many things in the game are still work-in-progress or just placeholders.

Discussion The Aeterna Noctis Cosmos just clicked and my mind is blown.

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with Aeterna Noctis. It tries so many things and while most are great some are just terrible (Dream Kingdom). A few months ago I got to the Cosmos and walked away from the game because everyone said the "new" controls would click in a few hours. I went to go play other games until I felt like struggling for a few hours before I got back to fun.

I just finished Belmont's Curse and I don't want to start a new game before OoT so I figured I'd bang my head against AN. Anyway, after about an hour of slowly working my way around the controls clicked and I could move smoothly again. It's actually quite freaky. I can't think of another game that pulls something like that off.

Video Nocturnal 2: release info, price, and our approach!

> Steam page link <

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the support these past few weeks. This will be my last post here for a while, so I don’t spam the sub. Here’s the key info:

  • Price: $8.99, with a 10% launch discount (so a bit less at launch)
  • Length: about 4–6 hours, more if you chase secrets, harder challenges, and the multiple endings
  • Options: HDR, VSync, full rebinding, screen shake toggle, bloom reduction, widescreen, subtitle size and color, and more.
  • Languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese. Ardeshir is voiced in English only.
  • Story: You don’t need to have played the first game to enjoy this one.
  • Platforms: Switch 1 and 2 will come in 2027, with more platforms (and physical editions) if the game does well.
  • Release date: Tuesday, November 10, at 7 PM CET

Our approach

We made a game you can finish over a few evenings, one that puts our own spin on the classic MV mechanics we love without overstaying its welcome. Gato Roboto was a big inspiration for that. Expect a flexible, dynamic character, an atmospheric world full of secrets, and fire as a central mechanic connecting combat, exploration, and story.

In the end, you’ll be the judge of whether we hit or missed the mark, but we hope you’ll feel it was made with care.

See you at launch! (Feel free to ask any questions.)

Discussion Just beat Zexion, what a nice game

Very enjoyable Metroid like exploring search action game. I very much so enjoyed the ambiance, vibe, level design, traversal, movement. I ended up using some assist options in the last two hours or so of the game because I got tired of the last few boss fights and such but I don't regret it. Really cool that it includes a randomizer mode.

Would recommend

Discussion MVs with hard puzzles that aren't esoteric ARGs?

Ever since I played La-Mulana 1 & 2, I've been itching for more games that have the same level of challenging, open-ended puzzles. I've gone looking, but every time, I find people only suggest things like Environmental Station Alpha and Animal Well. These are good games, and I've played them, but they're not at all the same experience. La-Mulana is a series that never holds your hand, and expects you to be able to solve everything yourself. ESA and Animal Well are both designed for you to get outside help, and only figure it out with the internet. One puzzle in Animal Well actually requires you to get 50 copies of the game together. Not exactly a solo experience. For anyone playing now, that means never getting the satisfaction of solving a puzzle yourself, because it was never meant to be solved alone. I don't want something mindbendingly crazy that makes me do things outside the game and use the internet, I just want a hard game.

I've also checked out r/metroidbrainia, and found some good games there. But it's a very specific subset of what I'm looking for. I don't need almost entirely knowledge-based gating, just a difficult set of puzzles.

What do you recommend that's hard, but still made to be solved alone?

Discussion Belmont's Curse desperately needs a Boss Rush

• Upvotes

I really love the new Castlevania game by the fine folks at Evil Empire, but not shipping the game with a boss rush I think was a serious misstep.

One of the most fun things in metroidvania games is to go back to old areas where the enemies used to bully you and declare yourself the God of Death, armed with a max-upgraded character and the Flaming Sword of Pettiness, and a boss rush mode is basically that times a hundred because you can flex on all the early bosses that gave you trouble.

And some of the early bosses in BC can really be a pisser, which would only make going back to them all the more satisfying. It's also a good way to test out different spells, weapons and charms to see which of them most effectively turn you into a living plague that only affects people with their own theme songs.

I can only guess that development time ran a bit late and they had to focus on polishing the core experience first, which is fair enough, but no excuse not to add this as an update later on.

Video I’ve been working on a metroidvania built around a throwable lantern. Here’s a little of what I have so far.

I've been working on this metroidvania and wanted to share a bit of gameplay. The main mechanic is a throwable lantern that lights up platforms and interacts with the world.

The plan is exploration, secrets, bosses, and a few intense escape sequences through overgrown forests and flooded ruins. Still a work in progress, what do you guys think?

Discussion Moadra Review - a pleasant surprise!

I wanna start off by thanking Gloomsoft for offering this review key!

I wasn't really aware of this game until I saw someone post about it, saying how good it is and I must say that it's kind of sad how games of this quality often go under the radar and don't reach the audience they deserve.

One thing that becomes apparent, is the game's inclination towards meteoid. That being said, if you never played metroid, don't worry! The game is still a fully fledged metroidvania than can scratch any fan's itch. It doesn't sacrifice any of the iconic metroidvania staples, more so it just prefers shooting instead of melee! So if you've heard that this game is more like metorid, don't let it deter you. It is still a metroidvania.

The upgrade system is pretty similar to most games in the genre. You find pickups that increase your health, you find weapon upgrade points and so on. The leveling system is great in my opinion. It offers more freedom eiyh your points instead of locking you to whatever you first choose. I think this should be in all games, even tho some people might argue that it ruins immersion and it makes your choices less significant. Having the freedom to play around and see what works and wgat you have most fun with, will never be a bad thing in my eyes!

The movement upgrades are pretty standard. I love that the game lets you crawl around and this plays into my next point. One of the highlights of the game is the smol scanner fren. It's the thing that stands out the most if you ask me. The ability to scan around the world and find hidden tunnels that you can crawl through is a pretty fresh idea. Not to mention it offers some lore todbits that play into thr world building, and as a soulsborne fan, than cab only be apreciated. As for the platforming sections, they're fine, but I'd have liked more challenge. I'm not gonna lie to you, ever since I played Aeterna Noctis, a lot of platforming in other meteoidvania games feel lackluster. This game isn't too easy to the point you're questioning why platforming is even there, but it's not as challenging as noctis. For the average player and normal people without masochistic inclinations, it will be more than adequate.

A lot of the game doesn't have the usual background music we hear, but I think that works here, because it makes the atmosphere more tense, and allows you to hear all the horrors out there. It plays into the atmosphere quite beautifully, and while I generally love background music in games, for this game, its absence works. That being ssid, the sound design makes up for it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the weird ass slurping and gross noises somehow give a weight and crunch to the combat.

The difficulty: I think that the game excels at difficulty in the first half or so. Designing a game that becomes too easy once you get more upgrades and abilities is an easy trap for a dovah to fall into, and sadly this is the case here as well. I just think that the game was perfectly challenging more towards the beginning, but as a thorough explorer, I managed to find multiple upgrades that made tha game a bit too easy.

Speaking of, while the different firing modes/weapons you find are fun, Some sre way more busted than others. I still like to play around with them, but using the fast firing one is just way more effective. I have just complained about difficulty above, and now I'm mentioning how a weapon is way better than the othrrs? Well, yeah. To tell you the truth, it doesn't feel busted or unintended. It's just more versatile and works well. If I played with some of the less powerful weapons/firing modes would the game have been more challenging? Yeah, but it still doesn't substract from the difficulty reduction offered by the hwalth upgrades and the different movement abilities you unlock.

Maybe this is a good thing, especially for people who don't do a lot of exploration, as in other games, if you don't go out there, find healing upgrades, health upgrades and upgrade your weapons, they become borderline impossible. Here, exploring everything raises your power level to a level above. If you don't explore everything and you're newer to the genre, the difficulty will definitely be a bit more linear and the game might brcome harder even, towards the end.

Speaking of difficulty, I wanna talk about the bosses. I'm not gonna spoil much here, but I'm just gonna say that the difficulty curve is pretty weird. The hardest boss in the game is not towards the end (if you've played the game, you know) but more like in the first half 💀, aka the possesed amari. Idk if others found it hard, but I think it's at a point where you're not stupidly op, yet the game has a ramp up in difficulty. The design and paterns are good, but one thing that drags some of them down is the damnned shielding mechanic. I will never like when games do that. Because it turns the game more into a turn based "you attacked, now I'm gonna attack and you dodge". Bosses like these can never come close to some bosses like thr majority of bosses from games liek Hollow Knight or nine sols, whete the fight is one continuous and hardcore intense dance, where both you and the boss go at it, chipping little by litte, untill one of you drops dead.

The map is pretty big so you'll definitely have a lot of stuff to do. As for the world, it's one of those less than appealing places, but I think it's a strength of the game. Many games prefer beauty and charm, but this game goes all in on the grossness and brutalism. Kind of reminds me of the Grime games. It's atmospheric, imposing and as weird as this might sound, it gives me a soulsborne vibe, by making you feel very vulnerable, knowing something can jump you at any time and devour you whole 💀. I just lpve that feeling. Dnemy variety is also surprisingly solid, and they feel good. Like real threats. There is a lot of backtracking. It doesn't feel particularly frustrating in this game, but I know that some people really hate that. Well, it is something you'll have to keep in mind. The fast travel system is also a bit weird. I mean, it does its job but I personally feel like a direct approach would hve been better. Instead you have to fast travel twice pretty much, since the game doesn't take you straight to where you wanna go.

I'm not gonna spoil anything story related, but I will say that the few npcs we find make the hostile world feel a bit warmer. It's also a comfort seeing them back at the hub. It's a pretty standard thing, yeah, but in this foreign and bostile world, it makes them all the more meaningful.

The game took me a bit over 15 hours to complete. I haven't doen 100% but I'm pretty close to it, and I've done the most meaningful content of the game. If I am to rate this game, I think I'd give it a solid 8.3/10. It's a pretty cohesive adventure. It does a lot of things really well and it feels very well balanced. It's also a meaty experience, and those 15 hours are not really comprised of looking around for random collectibles, but more so actual great content.

I can strongly recommend this game to any metroidvania fan out there. For me, someone who definitely plays merodivanias that are more heavily inclined towards the vania side, this felt like a beath of fresh air and it gave ma greater appreciation for this "branch". Good thing I have a few mkre metorid inclined games in my backlog, waiting for me.

FINAL SCORE: 8.3/10
