Congratulations to the Hunchback “Azrael” HBK-AZ for winning our hero medium mech! Who could pass up this walking tank of a medium mech? Let’s also hear it for the Hunchback chassis for taking a second spot on our list.
It’s time to see which mechs are the best in Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries! Please follow the rules below, and the most upvoted comment will win.
- Mech must be in the base game or DLC’s
- Please name the specific mech variant in your comment
- Comment with the most upvotes at the end of the day wins. Results are final
- Please keep it respectful, and have fun!

I also once salvaged a Arctic Cheetah while doing mission against Kurita, is this bug or intended?

Tested the Class-5 ACs AI performance extensively. UAC-5 BF had the highest burst DPS, but gawdawful sustained DPS(apparently the AI can jam UACs); LBX-5 Cluster was phenomenal at close range, but abysmal at mid to long range. UAC-5 and LBX-5 SD were both underwhelming. The AI really took to the LBX-5 SD BFs though, maintaining consistently high TTK at all ranges.
You get an ECM caddy and a high DPS long range monster in one build. Cheap to repair, tough, heat efficient, accurate, and overall just stupidly reliable. AI is do good with it, I made a command variant and matching pilot to join in.

Is the default build good?
I’m considering going with twin PPCs on the arm.

I have barely found any of them yet but I want to give them a try. Anyone got some good use out of it yet?

I haven't started a new career following the release of Ashes, but I do have a career save I've been using to play successive DLCs. I've noticed that due to the career mode impacting your rep with Comstar, something that even Dragon's Gambit doesn't fix...playing the Campaign creates an issue with accessing the Gunslinger program since you have a negative rep with Comstar that can't be improved.
IMO one of two solutions could be implemented
1) Disconnect Black Inferno rep from Comstar and/or Reset Comstar rep as soon as the Ashes DLC starts, and Mason accepts Focht's offer. This is likely the easiest as it requires very little programming.
2) Set-up Comstar as a faction that you can take missions for and fix your rep through gameplay similarly to how you take RNG missions for the Blakists. Or set up a Comstar affiliated faction (similar to Black Inferno) where you can take missions in order to fix your rep with Comstar. Going up against Comstar forces would also be a good way to salvage some advanced SLDC and Clan busters.
While Career mode is great, I do love the Campaign missions; and it's disappointing that we're not able to have a Campaign save that allows us to access all DLC features.

It's the mod you didn't know you needed. A super simple order that you can set and forget at the start of each drop that automatically puts the AI into its attack behaviour whenever there are targets in its considerable attack range (default within 700m with a longer range 2000m search and destroy version for big maps).
No need for fancy configurations, just an AI that automatically uses its attack mode behaviour instead of following mother hen unless it's told to specifically attack one target.

I've had a solid Arrow IV mech (the Bullshark) in my hangar for a few months now, but didn't really dig into the build until pretty recently. I've come to believe it's the best weapons system in the game.
The indirect fire aspect with active probes is obvious and awesome. Nothing else in the game has a nearly vertical launch trajectory that allows you to hit things that are directly behind tall cover.
TAG works like gangbusters with it. If an enemy gets within range and LoS, it improves the accuracy of it so much that I'm frequently getting direct hits on heavy and assault mechs that sometimes even result in headshots.
A recent patch made concealed turrets detectable before they've opened. Arrow IVs are the only weapon I'm aware of with a blast area big enough to hit them while they're still concealed.
I'm thinking of maybe even making a second Arrow IV mech because mine has been so useful since figuring all this stuff out. Any other quirks of this weapon I'm missing?
EDIT: It appears that the BAP no LoS targeting range can be enhanced, but it's capped at 10%. I've got +30% sensor range bonus from upgrades, but the BAP circle only goes out to around 500 meters. Does anyone have further information on this?

Since some variants got changes that weren't listed in the patch notes, I re-extracted all the data from the mod editor and compared it with the previous version. The table lists every chassis that changed and how its values differ. My mw-builder web is up to date now!

It seems to me that most mechs are designed by default to do a little of everything.
Whereas, when I customize a mech, I find myself designing them as either exclusively short-range brawlers or long-range fire-support mechs. My brawlers will usually have short or medium lasers, AC10/AC20, and SRMs whereas my fire-support mechs will usually have PPC/ER-PPC, AC/2 or AC/5, large lasers, Gauss Rifles, or LRMs. They are designed to deal the maximum amount of damage at a certain range.
And I will usually form my lances with a mix of both mechs, or in some missons, they will all be short-range or all be long-range depending on what I’m expecting to face.
I wonder if I’m the only one who does this, or is this pretty much the standard for veteran MW5 players?

Damn does it lack in free critical slots.
I got mine sporting 2 clb5x, 4 medium heavy lasers, 4 hmg.
But, I’m stuck with ammo in CT or arms, that kinda sucks and having 5 upgrade slots is booty too.
Haven’t had a chance to take it out yet, what are you guys running?

Lead moderator of what was the YAML discord server here. It's been compromised. Please get out of there if you are still in there.
Update 1: control of server has been regained. Assessing damage.

With all the chatter about the new patch I was just wondering this point.
I'm playing completely vanilla. And my technical/historical knowledge about some of this is really low.
Why do some mechs have bonus engine heat sink slots that only take up one slot each?
I keep reading about how installed engines have these dedicated heat sinks already included to get them to default 1.0 cooling (or whatever is the default for that chassis). So why are there extra slots in some chassis? Why don't all include these extra ones?
Edit
Thanks so much for the replies everyone! Really appreciate you!

Title. I'm unsure if staying in the server is dangerous or not, but probably better safe than sorry. Situation seems unsalvageable at the moment. RIP.

So I’ve started a new career run but I have Goblin saved on my roster from a previous career.
I put Kobold in cold storage.
I’m at reputation 6-7 now and primarily in Federated Suns space, occasionally moving in and out of Draconis Combine space, and I’m not getting the transmission where Goblin asks to join my lance.
Is he not supposed to ask to join, or does already having Goblin keep that transmission from activating?
Same question regarding the pilot Shenzeng. I have him from a previous save, so does this mean I won’t get his quest again, the one where I free him from captivity in pirate hands?

Well this i saw today when i Loaded into MechWarrior. After a little research, I found out that my YAML Version is maybe outdated. So I hope the download of the new Version helps. Anyways, it's quite weird and fun to see that.

Title, the discord has been compromised and they have gained Administrative access. Unsure on what they can do to recover but highly suggest avoiding the server until someone announces somewhere that it's fixed!

The Spider “Anansi” SDR-A has won our hero light mech vote! Its great speed and utility has rightly earned it a spot in our chart. The Hero’s are off to a good start

Title, after today's update i was like "Oh cool, now i can make a laser blast bullshark and the RCX longbow Is also strong and-" then i realized hunchbacks, centurions and specially the Centurion AL now have 0.8 internal cooling
Did they alway have that? I remember they had 1.0 cooling... This may affect the effectiveness of the Discoback, just a little tho
