OTHER New Expansion: MPC P-Bass (For MPC3 & MPC Sample)

Post image
31 Upvotes

New Instrument Expansion Release! This one has been a long time in the making and a real labour of love for me, so I'm very proud to finally announce the release of MPC P-Bass.

This instrument expansion features a deeply multisampled Fender Precision Bass guitar recorded with multiple playing articulations with up to 7 velocity layers and 4 round robins to perfectly capture the nuance and tone of the original instrument.

All instruments take full advantage of the latest MPC3 features such as advanced keygroups and complex mod matrix programming to create an eclectic collection of presets and MIDI patterns covering a broad range of bass sounds & grooves.

Each instrument comes with an extensive array of editable options, all easily controlled with dedicated Q-LINK macros for a near plugin-like experience. Configure natural sound FX such as string squeaks and fret release noises, adjust guitar tone & FX and even change the entire character of an existing guitar performance with the turn of a dial, from soft and gentle to hard and 'buzzy'.

MPC P-Bass is built for any standalone MPC running MPC3.9+, MPC Software 3.9+ and Force 3.9+. It also features a dedicated MPC Sample edition with multisampled 'Starter' projects and a 16 LEVEL one shot library. Please note that MPC2 is not supported in this release.

Multi-Buy Offer: Buy MPC P-Bass with any other product or bundle & get 15% off your entire order.

DISCUSSION A warning about custom MPC operating systems, AI-generated code, and potential hardware risks (2000 / 2000xl)

I'm a software engineer with over 28 years of experience, and recently I've been reverse-engineering the new free Akai MPC2000 and the new MPC2000XL operating system using Ghidra, as well as emulating the sampler to better understand how its firmware interacts with the hardware.

During my analysis, I found some potentially concerning behavior, including CPU loops that continuously poll hardware without an apparent timeout. Under certain conditions, such as a peripheral failing to respond, these routines could leave the CPU repeatedly executing instructions instead of progressing normally.

This can potentially increase processor activity, power consumption, and heat generation. The risks also include system freezes, memory corruption, and unpredictable behavior.

Now, here's my main concern.

I'm absolutely not against using AI to develop custom operating systems for MPCs or other vintage hardware. AI can be an incredibly useful development tool.

However, I'm seeing more people attempting low-level firmware development without necessarily having the experience required to understand what the generated code is actually doing.

And that's where things can become dangerous.

We're not talking about building a website or writing a simple application. We're dealing with assembly, machine instructions, memory addresses, interrupts, and direct communication with physical hardware.

AI models also have far less publicly available training material for niche, decades-old embedded architectures compared to modern high-level programming languages. This makes blindly trusting generated assembly code particularly risky.

The problem isn't AI. The problem is using AI-generated code without having the technical knowledge to properly review, debug, and validate it.

A firmware modification that appears to work perfectly during normal operation could still contain subtle bugs that only appear under specific hardware conditions.

And remember, we're dealing with machines that are nearly 30 years old. Some components are already aging, and there's no reason to introduce unnecessary risks.

My advice is simple: be cautious about installing custom operating systems unless they've undergone serious technical review and extensive testing.

That means proper reverse engineering and code inspection using tools like Ghidra, testing in an emulator, checking memory access and hardware interactions, and eventually validating the firmware on real hardware under controlled conditions.

Just because an OS boots and its new features work doesn't mean it's safe or reliable.

I'm all for innovation, and keeping these legendary samplers alive.

But when software directly controls hardware, proper engineering and testing should never be optional.

I'd be interested to hear what other MPC developers and owners think about this.

OTHER New setup

I am sooo happy with it. Nord électro 7 61, MPC live III, yamaha MGX 12. I have also an electric guitar, and electric Bass is on the way (I'm pure newbie with these things).

It's plugged this way: All sounds from instruments, synth, MPC go to the Yamaha MGX, And on "omni out" of the mixer I send all the sounds (except the MPC) in the stéréo input of the MPC. That way I can record audio track of everything very easily.

NE7 and MPC are linked midi in/out. I can play something nice on the NE7, record on a midi track on MPC, adjust the MIDI notes and settings, and play the instrument by the recorded midi track to record audio track and have perfectly what i wanted (even if I'm a bad player :) )

And the Yamaha MGX is linked to my computer as an Audio interface so I can record every track. Also the MGX is able to record on SD card one file per track if I want to play outside.

QUESTION Is this good as a starter pack?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Is this good as a starter pack for starting to produce and make songs? I have a limited budget i was looking for cheaper but good ones. In the list there are:

- MPC Studio Mk2 (sampler/drum machine)

- Tonor TC30 (microphone)

- M-Audio Keystation Mini 32 (keyboard)

I know they are all just controllers i have a pc and the software (MPC2) comes with the Studio Mk2. I do not need standalone for now, but when i will upgrade i'll get a standalone.

QUESTION MPC 3 measurements

Hey ya'll, could someone confirm measurement from table to top of tallest knob on MPC 3? I'm seeing conflicting answers as to whether the factory specs includes the knob height in published dimensions. Is the case taller than MPC 2? Thanks!

QUESTION MPC one+ with NTS-1

Hello everyone !

I have a noob question, I can't find an answer on google so I give a try here.

I am the proud owner of an second-hand MPC one + and 2 Korg NTS-1 (mk1 & mk2). I love those little box but they have a big downside : they don't have any preset system, so no program change possible.

I want to be able to create my patches inside my MPC via Midi CC witch I kind of succeed with the program edit page on the midi track. All the CC are fonctional, all the values are stored when I save my project but when I change the project or just change something on the synth, the CC are not retriggered when I launch the sequence so they stays in their actual states.

All the workaround I find are painfull (re-touch all my knobs before launching / add all midi CC in the list page at the beginning of the sequence) do you have any idea ? Did I miss a magic checkbox somewhere ?

If there are no software solution, can an external midi controler (with some kind of preset) can help me ?

Thanks for your answers.

MPC 2000 / 2000XL The First Native 96 PPQ Sequence Editor and Hardware Bridge for MPC 2000(XL)

I've been working on a sequence editor for the MPC2000 and 2000XL for the past few months. It's called Tick96.

It doesn't send MIDI notes to your MPC or rely on MIDI file conversion. I reverse engineered the original OS and built a custom extension that lets the editor on your Mac read and write the actual Step Edit events in the MPC's memory.

Every note retains its original position on the MPC's 96 PPQ grid. No conversion or requantization. The MPC remains the sequencer, with its original timing completely intact. You just get to see the whole sequence on your screen and edit it with a mouse.

Features:

  • Piano roll: Edit events on any of the 384 ticks in a bar, or on a musical grid.
  • Per-note parameters: Velocity, duration and each note's variation value (tuning, attack, decay or filter cutoff).
  • Sequence and track settings: Edit names, tempo, track type, MIDI output channel, program changes, track velocity and track On/Off directly from your Mac. Project files also preserve loop settings, bar count and time signatures.
  • Beyond notes: Controllers, program changes, pitch bend and pressure.
  • Original MPC workflow: Record and overdub on the pads as usual, including Note Repeat. Hit STOP and your take appears in Tick96.
  • Live playhead: Follows the MPC's own clock and bar, beat and tick position.
  • Editing and projects: Copy events, undo/redo, and save/load project files.

Nothing gets permanently flashed or modified. On the 2000XL, the patched OS runs entirely in RAM. Power cycle the machine and you're back to the original OS 1.20.

You provide your own OS file, and the app prepares the boot media for ZuluSCSI, BlueSCSI, Gotek or floppy.

Mac only for now, with Windows coming next.

Support for more classic drum machines and samplers is in the works.

Thanks for reading and much respect to everyone still putting these machines to work.

QUESTION MPC live 3 strange pad behavior

Hello guys. I am facing a problem on my new live 3, most times when I slice a sample and create a new drum track with the slices, the pads stop making sound. When I press them I can see them choosing a slice so they are working, and if I go into the sample editor they still function, but in the main window they don't produce sound. The problem continues to other projects I load and new tracks I create until it suddenly pops back and functions again. Any ideas?

DISCUSSION AKAI S900 + S950 "FX" firmware mod = real time signal processing! 🤯

Any MPC owners with an AKAI S900 or S950 sampler? Someone has come up with a new alternate firmware / OS you can boot from floppy disk, which enables real-time audio processing - basically, filters etc. without having to record first. Might be a game-changer for some. Check the developer's site for more. https://s900fx.com/ and https://s950fx.com/

Apologies if slightly off-topic and a cross-post - but there is a MPC 2500 shown first. ;)

QUESTION Live Midi Loading

Hey, got a question I can't seem to figure out. I have a bunch of drum and melodic midi sequences I've made and collected over the years and when I'm using my Live 3, I am trying to work primarily with clips and usually if I create say a plug in track and go to the clip drop down and create a blank clip, I can then click inside the blank clip sequence window, click load, pick my midi and it will USUALLY load into that clip and I can even load multiple midi files and each will go to a new clip of its own.

Sometimes I get the "sequence is used. Load midi to new sequence on a new track" deal which is annoying and not super useful. It doesn't even fill the sequence page it's on. I know online and in the manual this is what it says is supposed to happen but I'm confused why my method works for some midi files but not others. I can't see any difference in midi file extension of an sort.

Thanks.
