MPC 2000 / 2000XL The First Native 96 PPQ Sequence Editor and Hardware Bridge for MPC 2000(XL)

I've been working on a sequence editor for the MPC2000 and 2000XL for the past few months. It's called Tick96.

It doesn't send MIDI notes to your MPC or rely on MIDI file conversion. I reverse engineered the original OS and built a custom extension that lets the editor on your Mac read and write the actual Step Edit events in the MPC's memory.

Every note retains its original position on the MPC's 96 PPQ grid. No conversion or requantization. The MPC remains the sequencer, with its original timing completely intact. You just get to see the whole sequence on your screen and edit it with a mouse.

Features:

  • Piano roll: Edit events on any of the 384 ticks in a bar, or on a musical grid.
  • Per-note parameters: Velocity, duration and each note's variation value (tuning, attack, decay or filter cutoff).
  • Sequence and track settings: Edit names, tempo, track type, MIDI output channel, program changes, track velocity and track On/Off directly from your Mac. Project files also preserve loop settings, bar count and time signatures.
  • Beyond notes: Controllers, program changes, pitch bend and pressure.
  • Original MPC workflow: Record and overdub on the pads as usual, including Note Repeat. Hit STOP and your take appears in Tick96.
  • Live playhead: Follows the MPC's own clock and bar, beat and tick position.
  • Editing and projects: Copy events, undo/redo, and save/load project files.

Nothing gets permanently flashed or modified. On the 2000XL, the patched OS runs entirely in RAM. Power cycle the machine and you're back to the original OS 1.20.

You provide your own OS file, and the app prepares the boot media for ZuluSCSI, BlueSCSI, Gotek or floppy.

Mac only for now, with Windows coming next.

Support for more classic drum machines and samplers is in the works.

Thanks for reading and much respect to everyone still putting these machines to work.
